It's odd how people change. A few decades ago nobody would have expected religious fundamentalism from Russia. I'd rather trade this religious close-mindedness and oligarchic kleptocracy for old-school Communism, to be honest. I think all of this has its root in Russia discarding Gorbachev for Yeltsin in the early nineties. Instead of a smooth, orderly transition to a market economy they got the "shock and awe" treatment with the total collapse of existing structures. No wonder they are so sceptical towards economic and social liberalism if that is their impression of it. Following this, Russia's reaction to the Charlie Hebdo shootings is deeply contradictory. -

Meanwhile, in Russia: Films that "insult Russian culture" or "threaten national unity" are to be banned. This following protest from the Orthodox Church. Also, read this article. "Russian Orthodox activists rallied in the same place, displaying banners that read: "Blasphemers from France horribly slurred Jesus Christ — and received a just punishment" and "The responsibility for the tragedy lies with the French government. They did not protect the feelings of believers."" -
Solid GUI in Progress

Yep. Pretty much this. I want the UI too look like an in-game object. I do not want **** like this: Pretty much a textbook example of how to not design a pretty UI. Now look at this: Now THAT is beautiful to look at. -

How is any design better than any other? I know for sure that I loved the BG UI, but hated the NWN and NWN2 UIs. Me, I want something which is stylish, clear and fits the game's theme. I don't like when all the things you want to see is shrunk to minimal sizes. I want something which feels solid and tangible and not something which reminds me of shuffling around windows in my OS' interface. -
I think they add a neat touch

TBH I have never really felt that balancing was such a big problem in Arcanum. You could basically say that the game offers you to play as a ****ing necromancer death machine, which is to be considered a separate difficulty. You might interpret that as meaning that I have a RP approach to character creation, as opposed to a gamist view. In any case, I have even less problem with there being many bad builds than I have with there being OP ones which make the game too easy. In fact, I think bad builds increase replayability. I know that at least I have replayed Arcanum several times with intentionally gimped builds to complete the game in unexpected ways. It's more fun than giving monsters 50% more HP or something like that.

Wow, I just mentioned that and now this is looking more like the Codex by the minute Anyway, for me - I guess mostly a "story[-------]" using Codex terminology - Arcanum is one of my top 5 RPGs of all time.

Update #88: Final Sprint and... Release Date!

It is still on Kaz's plate. Just recently we did more internal (friends and family) play tests. We got quite a bit of UI feedback so that is his current top priority. Just great to hear. Actually I consider solid UI to be something akin to my pet PoE issue. You know, I'm allergic to thin, wiry and transparent UIs. Well alright, I'm not THAT allergic. -
Overall I found it to be a fetid stew of acerbic grumbling, unchecked profanity, and hyperbolic negativity. At this point, I don't take their opinions too seriously because they aren't representative of what I enjoy. But they do put out the occasional interesting review. The negativity is like a language you will have to learn to interpret. But yeah, it's fun when people are spewing venom on ****ty new games, but when the Codex negativity reaches classics like Arcanum and PST I can also find it a little bit unwarranted.

Yeah, the Versailles treaty and the end-game of the war is pretty much what you would have had to prevent -
RPG Codex is everything you would expect from a liberally moderated forum. Old gamers are "oldfags", new gamers are "newfags", forum smileys with racist stereotypes, and so on. In other words, lots of fun if you have thick skin, but the General Discussions forums are a honeypot for racism and pretty much everything you can imagine which would be deleted from the WOT sub-forum here. Just stay away from that part and I'm sure you will have a good time at the Codex.

The dolchstosslegende which put the Nazis in power was grounded on a military overreaction of the entente powers. I believe that is the best lesson from in inter-war era. Of course you could also have handled the Nazis differently but I prefer to use peaceful, preventive means. No. But it was a slow and arduous process as well. Secondly our secularism - specifically the freedom of religion in the Netherlands which was the forerunner at it's time - was inspired by the Ottoman Empire at the time (late 1500s IIRC). Yes process was slow, but why it was slow? I believe its because we didnt have anything else then religion but today we are flying into space. All those scientific discoveries made through history brought us closer to secularisation because they start questioning christian teaching (if you were is space you kind of know that there is no bearded man on cloud here). Same should apply for muslims but for some reason it didnt Yes - why didn't it? It's a good question. They have actually in many cases reverted from secularism to conservatism. All we know is that religions can change, and that they will change beyond recognition when their followers do so. Just look at today's Christians - not at all similar to Christians of 100 years ago. No. I'm saying that they could have acted preventively so that Hitler would never gain popularity. In any case, I believe that in peace, you should do your worst in diplomacy, and in war, you should do your worst in war. The entente failed to make inter-war Germany a growing ground for democracy and preferred senseless punishment. And then when they declared war, they did not attack in earnest. This breaks both my principles. -

Hell yes. If you ever do another Kickstarter, have "We'll make a 10-minute "The Office"" parody" as a stretch goal . -

You can never know for sure, but you can at least try. But they didn't get any oil, now did they? Now use Hanlon's razor. It was caused by instincts of xenophobia, while the military-industrial lobby, the oil lobby and the pro-Israel lobby all made their best to declare these wars. Hell, the entire Bush cabinet was practically made out of JINSA (Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs) and PNAC members. War in the ME was pretty much guaranteed with those guys running the show. 9/11 only made it happen quicker. You can't beat extremism with the edge of a sword. You have to be more clever than that. Current Islamic radicalism is a reaction to the powerlessness of Muslim countries in the last 400 years. It is fuelled by a minority complex. Remember, conservative Muslim goat herders do not travel to the West to shoot us. Muslims who live here, experience our society and see how backwards the Muslim countries are compared to the West become terrorists. When we get stable, modern countries in the ME these complexes will disappear. We won't need to wait 100 years for Muslim secularization if we can give it a push in the right direction. -
The entire Total War series is just a dumbed-down version of Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat anyway. /care

But I already said I don't think we should accept immigrants who outright reject how we live. We should sent them right back. Also, change is due the changing circumstances, it is not to be expected spontaneously. Christianity was also an enabler of barbaric crusades, torture and imperialism, but it changed too, as well. Nowadays it's just a haven for paedophiles, which HAS to be an improvement. The pope's throne was pretty much a corrupt, malign cancer during the Middle Ages. But that changed. Nowadays I almost like the pope. The US blew I don't know how much on the war in Iraq, and that gained them nothing. It was a huge waste of money. Same with the war in Afghanistan - although that might have come with some small positives. I'm sure the Kurds would have wanted the Iraq war and it's aftermath again if they could choose though. If you can waste such titanic amounts of money on nothing, I'm sure they could spend money to promote "intelligent" (that is, old-school) Islam among Muslims and create Western, secular media that would be appealing to Muslims, promote secular Western news channels in Arabic et.c.... The question is just how we can get someone to pay up for these psy-ops. Most politicians are not into playing the long game. -
Yep, going to back this...
