I wouldn't call that irony. In fact, I fully expect it to be the game's intended business strategy.

Dragon Age: Inquisition
Some people hold their opinions with enough vigor and certainty that other opinions seem wrong. And other times, people are defensive because other people have dismissed theirs, so they return the favor. It's impossible for me to fault people who think kindly of DA2 because I did the same at first. I had complaints, Sister Petrice had me screaming "OH COME ON" very early, but it wasn't really until the final act that I fully digested things. Working for Merideth and realizing the same complaints I had about Petrice were still in action. That the little complaints I was willing to overlook were actually very large things that came to dominate. If I'd been able to overlook that a bit more, maybe I'd also say it was decent. Or if I'd found something elsewhere in it that I appreciated enough.

Drama and games journalism, soggy leg joint edition
Can't we all just get along? Old thread. Any interesting developments, or are we all just here for the drama of bickering at one another? I haven't kept up with subculture discussion in some time.

RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS
The typical gorn movie's value lies in shock effect. A build up of tension leading to those OH GOD I CAN'T WATCH moments. The audience drawn to this on the other hand will either be from angst or controversy.

What are you playing now?
I've found that the androids will always find you in a locker no matter what, which it seems like to me makes that mechanic superfluous. It might depend on various factors, like if they see you go in the locker or if it's the only locker in a room with no exit. Or maybe the lockers are only there for other enemies. I don't know, that was the only time I used a locker for anything other than to just see what they do. Those androids are tough SOBs though. I've learned that if you're close enough, peaking out so you can only see the top of their head still gets you spotted. Three came at me and I decided to fight it out. Bad decision, I only got one down.

Dragon Age: Inquisition
I like to think I'm not so much sitting on the fence as fully on the other side, glancing over, thinking it would look rather nice if you didn't own four dogs. And I haven't heard them wake me up barking at night in a few days, so I'm still not sure if they're crapping in the yard.

Dragon Age: Inquisition
Since I'm curious as to the point of your comment, I'll ask: Are you saying that Gaider was lying?
-
Dragon Age: Inquisition
I'm going to redbox it first unless I get heavy positives from some of the more critical voices. General positivity won't work because we had that before from first impressions, even my own.

Do you get Attributes on Level Up?
Stat gains always bothered me because they commonly produce a treadmilling effect. Perhaps I spent too much time with DA2, D&D 3.x, and D&D4, but the stat gains always existed just to make up for increased defense of monsters. If you don't use the opportunity to buff your own to-hit, then you're effectively becoming weaker. That's not customization.

Dragon Age: Inquisition
I recall Gaider coming out and saying that the 11 month timetable was entirely a Bioware decision. I'm inclined to believe him. To further your theory, some concept art of Hawke that's reminiscent of Inquisitor garb exists. The inquisition plot is apparently quite old. And with DA2's ending, I can't help but think it was partially designed as a prologue for what they planned for DAI.

What are you playing now?
Encountered three bugs in my Alien run last night. None gamebreaking, all kind of weird. First one is in the second encounter with the alien. You have to hack a door and he's stalking in the vents. Well, I hacked it and the moment I did out he comes. I rush through the door and start pounding away at the controller to use the elevator. It takes a while before the option even appears, and immediately after it works, I get stabbed through the back by the tail. During the loading screen I was debating whether that was scripted and I'd be dealing with it on the next level or it if was a bug and I'd end up dead while loading. Thankfully there was no death, but it wasn't intended behavior. Got into combat with an android I couldn't see. Turns out he was in the next room over running into the wall between us. I got an achievement for escaping that combat without any damage. I also encountered a couple fresh-in-box androids in a storage room. Combat music starts up, I figure I'll hide in a closet just to see what happens. A couple seconds in, an androids yanks me out of the closet, I do the QTE, and pull from its grasp. It immediately drops all hostility and then walks back to faceplant against its now empty, but still sealed, glass case. I could do no damage to it.

Movies you've seen recently
I saw Gone Girl and the entire time I thought to myself "Rosamund Pike would make a perfect lead for an Alien film." That's just kind of how my mind operates. Reminds me of Sigourney Weaver.

Have you come across any tedious areas yet? One of the reviews I read said that the good parts were dragged down by a bunch of walking around with nothing happening. That's what I was referencing positively as the long atmospheric opening. So far all I've done is seen a few lights go out, turn on the power in a few places, and read journal entries. Nothing has happened. I've played almost an hour.

After Smelter Demon is the Old Iron King, and then Fume Knight if you got the DLC (lol don't get me started on the Fume Knight, literally 75 tries to bring him down, and that's with using summons). If you return to Smelter Demon's location then pursuer shows up. You also get to fight 2 pursuers at the same time after you kill the last boss and go back to the throne room in Drangleic Castle How is the DLC? I'm really thinking about getting it. And are you telling me that it's integrated into the game's normal progression?

What are you playing now?
I started Alien: Isolation and it gives an incredible first impression. Graphically I forgot last gen was this capable. It's building up good expectations from the start with little environmental details you can play around with, a long atmospheric opening even before any enemies are found, and promises of metroidvania openness with locked doors I won't be able to access until later.

Still running through Wright v Layton. Still loving it, it's one of the best for either series. Just bought Alien: Isolation, haven't checked it out. I need to grab the Dark Souls 2 DLCs and I'm proving that I hate myself by going through Neverwinter Nights. So I've got a full plate of late.
