Which are the worst CRPGs of the last decade?

It's what I do. The longwindedness, I mean... not voting for PoR2. -
Which are the worst CRPGs of the last decade?
Magnum Opus replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Computer and Console
Stool of Radiance 2 gets my vote. Granted, I haven't played Dungeon Siege, Dungeon Lords, Gothic (this one's on my To-Do list), or Fable, and I've only played the demo of Divine Divinity (I've already got a Diablo game... one's probably enough, I think), but of Ultima 9, The Elder Scrolls series, and Diablo, my vote goes to PoR2. Not only was it a huge letdown, but it completely gutted the (not even yet fully developed) 3E DnD rules, it gutted the character creation options, and it implemented the absolute worst turn-based combat I've yet seen. The setting was surprisingly well done in that things didn't exist solely for my convenience, and monsters were where they were for a reason beyond my finding them, but that invisible rope binding the character together made it a chore to actually explore. The story was just as good as any dungeon crawl, but linear as hell with no chance to influence anything. Good enough to tie the areas together, but that's it. The RNG is one of the worst I've seen with dice rolls continually being fudged in favour of the enemies, and the final fight pretty much requires a sword of such ridiculous -
Still go there daily, and even post every so often, too, although the vast majority of those are of the "helpful" variety in the BG2 section. It's my most heavily frequented game company message board... I've got something like 400 posts over there! And it only took me a little over four years to accumulate them all. *feels like such a spammer*

Stupid things you've done in video games...
Magnum Opus replied to Deraldin's topic in Computer and Console
Does "spending about 2 minutes buffing and re-buffing my level 10 party in preparation for picking a fight with Firkraag for the 5th time in a row (the previous 4 of which resulted in my party's quick and humiliating annihilation) and then forgetting to cast 'Protection from Fire' on most of my group, while then forgetting to cast 'Resist Fear' for an ill-fated 6th attempt" count as stupid? If so... then nope. Can't think of a single stupid thing I've done in a game. " -

I was actually considering picking up Dungeon Siege a while back, partly for the game itself but also on the off-chance that Lazarus would see the light of day. I went with Morrowind instead... slightly moreso for the game itself, but also because of a project I knew was (and still is, apparently) in the offing, called Ultima Redemption. I figured Lazarus wouldn't quite make it out of the tomb this time around, or that he'd suffocate before they could unwrap him (boy, wouldn't that have been a kick upside the halo), so I went with Morrowind. Dang. MO: 0 - 1. Great to see one of these Ultima mods out there, though. *thumbs up* Congrats to all involved.... ... now get workin' on a patch! -
Your response to violence in Games
Magnum Opus replied to Hell Kitty's topic in Computer and Console
*nods* I'm the same way... only without the screaming. Typically, how my character acts is as close to how I'd act as I can get it (when I'm not deliberately powergaming). I was never able to get the hang of creating a character and then playing that character to the hilt no matter what he/she was doing or was supposed to be like. Little bits of "me" keeping slipping through the cracks. *shrugs* -
Your response to violence in Games

In general, ther are a few rules that seem to apply to me when I'm playing games: 1. party-member death is generally unacceptable. Exceptions to this rule include the following: a) party member is annoying (Anomen in BG2 -- clubbed him to death several tmes myself -- and Dogmeat in FO. Mongrel creature kept blocking me in, and finally enough was enough), and b) Resurrection is relatively convenient (a temple is within a gameplay hour away, or I'm not loaded down with items that I can't carry without that person, that will disappear when I interrupt my adventuring to go get them raised). 2. NPC death is also generally unacceptable, provided said NPC isn't Mr. Generica ... if it's just a random beggar that gets fried I'm likely to just press on, whether I was the one that fried him or not. If it's someone intersting -- a shopkeeper, or even someone with relatively non-standard dialogue -- I'm going to reload. I'll go to ridiculous lengths to protect innocent bystanders if I'm given the opportunity of doing so. 3. Hostile NPC death is fine, almost no matter what. Hostile beggar? Die. Hostile children? Die die die. Hostile puppies and kittens? Toss 'em into a blender and hit "pur -

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones Reviews

Hah! I remember those... Ah, the good ol' days. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Heh... I've still got one of those. -
I'm here because these are the message boards for one of the few companies that make cRPGs for the PC, and as such, I keep hoping that someday, something in that vein will appear. Alas, it hasn't yet. I'm only lukewarm on NWN2 (although I'd be elsewhere if I was really interested in that anyway), and since Star Wars is generally lame, I'm sort of holding out hope that Whatever Comes After New Jersey will appeal. Yeah, there are a lot of former Black Isle devs here, and they made some pretty spiffy games, but I don't know about this "Obsidian" yet, so they're still up in the air for me. *considers* Now that i think about it, though, what the devil AM I doing here? There's no real game in the works that I'm interested in, gaming in general has been in such a rut for me that the last new game I bought was ToEE, and spam generally irritates me... even my own. *more considerings* In retrospect, I can't think of a single reason why I'm here other than because it's in my list of automatic bookmarks. I suspect it's time to update those.

Most difficult game you have ever played
Magnum Opus replied to kumquatq3's topic in Computer and Console
King's quest... 4, was it? The Perils of Rosella, whatever number it was. Couldn't find that thrice-be-damned Golden Bridle. Turns out you had to be swallowed by a whale while in possession of a pea**** feather (that you found on an island only reachable by swimming through shark-infested waters (instant death if shark nabs you)), then walk up the whale's tongue in a 1 - 3 pixel wide path (not represented graphically), beginning at a certain spot on the right hand side of the whale's mouth, tickle the whale's mouth, and get spit out into the waters near a small island. In the boat was the bridle (also not represented graphically), which you just had to know, somehow, was in there... no clues anywhere in the game, but there it was. Step into the boat, and type, for no reason at all, "get bridle". And the stairs in that blasted tower were a nightmare to try and navigate as well. Dear Rosella would somehow manage to break her neck if she fell off a two foot embankment, never mind taking a nose dive off a three story circular staircase. Damn, am I ever glad that certain forms of gameplay have fallen by the wayside as games have evolved over the years. Edit: Oh, come on.. I can't say pea****? What about peahen? This filtering software is sexist, damnit! -
I stand corrected. I believe I mentioned that I'm not all that big a fan of the movies/setting (as in, not at all), and what I remember, I remember from when I saw them when they were in theatres a couple decades or so ago.... when I was around 7 - 10 ish, most likely. My paraphrasing of the players' lines (not to mention the basics of who-said-what) may have been a wee bit off. :D That whole scene was just pure fun, though.

Is that where the food thing came into play? 'Cause I noticed the mention of Dissertations and Food in the heading for the thread -- was what initially caused me to click -- but I ain't seein' no mention of food in here.

Absolutely! ... Well... no. I could lie about it and say that I am if it helps, though.

"Toilet question?" You've all got me kind of curious about these deliberately mysterious questionnaires... If you're still looking for participants, I've got a few hours this afternoon, if that's enough time to complete things. I'm trying to think up excuses to not get out there and rake the leaves...

Despite not being a fan of the series in any way shape or form, there are two scenes that stick out for me: 1. In the first movie, where Mr. Vader n' Co. are persuading Princess Leia to tell them the location of the rebel base. Vader: "We will destroy your home world if you do not tell us!" Leia: "No!" Vader: "Yes!" Leia: "Ok... I'll tell you....." Vader: "Thank you. Evil Commander Guy? Evil Commander Guy: "Yes Mr. Vader? Vader: "Fire!" Leia: "Wha...?" ... Always liked those beams joining to blast that planet into smithereens. Neato. 2. Return of the Jedi.... when the Emperor was frying Luke. It wasn't Vader's subsequent redemption at that point that I liked, stepping in to save his boy. That was nice, but what really made that scene fo me were the pretty lights. :D None of this pansy "lets make my tie fighter float, look how sweet my force powers are" crud, either. Lightning bolts! yeah! Zap 'im again! Besides, I always kind of liked seeing Skywalker getting fried. Damn, I found him annoying in those movies :D He was always such a clueless n00b...

And just to go completely off-topic, I just discovered that the guy from Prison Break -- John Whatsisname, mobster-type guy (real name Peter Stormare) -- was the voice of Isair in IWD2. First time I heard that guy speak long enough to get a real feel for how he speaks, and damn did it sound familiar. Turns out it was. *is always smug when he can make little associations out of the blue like that* Ok... continue.

360 games even more expensive than Xbox ones

Exclusively PC here as well. I'm just too casual a gamer to be prepared to spend a hundred bucks (or three- or four-hundred) on a piece of hardware for which, in all probability, I'll end up buying only one or two games, but the rest of the time will end up collecting dust. Unless it comes out in that lovely PC format, I won't see it. Odds are I won't see it anyway, but at least if it's for the PC it's got a chance.

Quest for Glory 2 had one, too; was great for getting back to the city in a hurry, if you ever got lost. Integral part of the plot, too. How you people could ever forget Roget the Saurus and still call yourselves gamers is beyond me... :D

New Bioware game announced for Xbox 360
Magnum Opus replied to Epiphany's topic in Computer and Console
But it never really wins over it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Only on intarweeb message boards where peoples' tastes differ and they feel the need to argue over which one is more "right", using logic to somehow back up their arguments and score points.... although just who's tallying these points is up for debate. For the rest of the world, taste really does defy logic a large part of the time, and is accepted as doing so. That said, the new message boards for the game are too bright, and it's an XBox game besides. That means it's already off my radar screen. Next game, please. -
The Usual Suspects. Fun little movie.
