  1. You enjoy playing with monks. I don't. Some people do some people don't. Who cares. I 100% 'don't agree with almost everything you have said there. You have have completely turned a blind eye to my comparison of a monk to a cipher. I drew that comparison for the purposes of showing how bland and dull a monks abilities are to how exciting a ciphers can be and you dismissed it by saying they are so different. No sh$t. But they are still both classes to select in pillars. Monks are centered around unarmed combat, what the hell are you talking about that they aren't. It's very plain to see that they have numerous talent selections upon level up that involve unarmed combat. Your saying you don't have to pick them or some of them can be used in conjunction with weapons. No Sh$t. But they still are centered on unarmed combat. There is monk specialist equiptment you get in the game that involves unarmed combat eg gloves, sandals, robes I swear I have even seen you post in other threads that monks are better of fighting without weapons. Below is a cut and paste from the most popular monk build " the juggernaut" Weapons - Primarily you want to use your fists. They scale with level, they are fast speed, they do more damage than other fast speed weapons. You will want to have another damage type available, for this I like Spears. There are a few good spears, no one else ever uses them. The custom designed one Cladhaliath works well. Throw a lash and a Spirit Slayer on it and you'll be happy.
  2. I agree. It is selling well because it has been "dumbed down" to appeal to a broader market where as pillars of eternity appeals mainly to former pen and paper dungeons and dragons players. When I say dos2 is dumbed down compared to pillars I mean: - it is far more goofy so little kids can also appeal to playing it. - more colourful scenery, so it looks pretty, in a kind a Rosie girlie way - combing the elements eg fire, water, earth in the combat system are the main battle tactics as opposed to outright weapons and magicical power - the narrative writing is sooooooooo childish. A lot of the quests involve go to x to collect a box from y. - childish goofy, pathetic monsters to fight, eg giant frogs, talking crabs, big turtles It is a dumbed down RPG that has been made with every attempt at making it less " dark" to appeal to a wider audience. Anyone from 6 year olds to grandpas would probably be included in there target audience.
  3. It probably goes back to my old pnp d&d days. That is when I fell in love with fantasy games and the core elements I like most are the traditional spellcasters, sword slingers ect. Monk are to focused on unarmed combat. I no you can use weapons with them but they are optimally used unarmed. There magic abilities/ talents are quite dull imo and are focused on unarmed combat, eg torments reach, swift strikes ect....Compare a monks talents/ spells to a ciphers for example, they are so different in terms of versatility to suit situational awareness and they lack a level of excitement that you need to have fun with a class. I don't get a buzz on selecting a talent upon level up that enhances my punches and kicks. Plus there is the whole stereotypical stigma attached to being a monk: eg wearing robes and sandals and punching and kicking people. I play games like pillars for the opposite reasons of what a monk is. I find monks incredibly boring to play, even more then that: I can't stand them because they are so boring. Having a monk in my party seems to have the effect of dragging my entire team down for the enjoyment factor.
  4. You should play warhammer total war 2. Downloaded it yesterday and so far so good. The closest thing to a modern day "Warcraft 4" I have come across. I have found it to be more enjoyable then dos2 so far. To Rate out of ten games I have played in recent times: Pillars - 9.5 Gta5 - 9 Doom (new) - 8 Total war 2 - 8 Divinity os 2 - 4.5 Tyranny - 2 Torment tides - 0 Dos2 combat is WAY to slow and clunky for me. The fights drag on for ages. More like a very slow game of chess then an RPG. What really annoys me about dos 2 is that after spending 40-50 minutes in a slow paced long drawn out combat you go straight into another one, then another one and it just goes on and on. I can't stand that because after winning a big hard boss fight for example I have a feeling off " phew thank god that is over". Combat becomes to much of a tedious chore and I'm just glad to get it over and done with instead of enjoying it.
  5. I don't really play pillars anymore because I've played it so many times it has become to easy for me. But if I did play again my fav party comp would be probably an mix of ranged and melee of the following four classes 1. Cipher (awesome class, startling originality from OBS, so much fun to play) 2. Wizard ( Great fun to play, so versatile, never a dull moment with a wiz) 3. Barb ( interesting class, I wouldn't say they are all that powerful or effective but they are fun) 4. Pally (again good fun to play, OBS pulled of the paladin extremely well IMO) I have kind of lost faith in these classes for the following reasons: 1. Priest ( they make the game to easy for me with there powerful buffs and you can beat just about any fight in the entire game be using minor avatar, abydons hammer, maegfolc skull then raining fire on everything) 2. Druids (relentless storm is ridiculously powerful and should be nerfed) 3. Rogues ( they have no good mid/ late game talents to choose from) 4. Ranger (again the stormcaller bow make the game to easy with the storms summon) 5. Chanter (don't like the idea of dragon thrashed being such a core centre piece of one class, eg one super powerful ability that defines all) 6. Monks. BORING. The most boring class in pillars of eternity.
  6. What about a rogue with leadspitter, ryonas vembraces, penetrating shot, max might, sneak, death from backstab on a 0 DR target. That would be interesting (and funny watching whatever it hit explode)
  7. If deadfire doesn't considerably out sell pillars 1 I am sure that obsidian would consider it a failure. That's how I would gauge its success also. Deadfire needs to outsell pillars 1 to prove that there is significant demand in the market for these games to justify making more like them. I must also say that making tryranny and torment tides didn't help there cause. Trash games like that trying to cash in of the back of pillars only damaged crpgs moving forward. There production is already fragile and didn't need bad advertising like those games gave.
  8. Ive got a feeling that deadfire will be game changer for RPGs in the modern era. I have big expectations for it and I am almost certain they will be met. I'm expecting almost baldurs gate 2 kind of success to be honest. Pillars of eternity 1 has sold somewhere between 1.5 mil to 2 mil copies. Deadfire should do around 2.5 mil to 3 mil i think. How big do you guys think it will be in terms of a success and how do you think it will define and compare to other modern RPGs in this era?
  9. yep you got me I completely agree with everything you have said. PS....I would never read 11 paragraphs of complete BS and lost interest in reading it after the first sentence
  10. So my last line in what I said doesn't make more sense then boerer telling a newb (semi newb) that combusting wounds is a raw all powerful weapon of destruction that has been lab tested to do 300 points of damage to your enemy? Im just trying to be real
  11. Hang on hang on. Combusting wounds is a low level wizard spell that can possibly do significant damage under the right conditions. Those damage figures you have quoted there from maxquest 300 damage? That is no where near realistic what will be replicated by a player in realistic battle conditions. That build you have mentioned with the quick switch Off the blunderbuss four times: just doing that quick switch would kill most enemies so much damage would come just from that. I think you are over selling how powerful it is, under the right conditions, versus the right enemy, who has low DR, if positioned properly it can do beneficial.
  12. I wouldn't be expecting to much from a chanter. There invocations take a ridiculous time to work, most fights you only be able to use them once. There phrases have basically no impact at all and are more like " cantrips". You will also be forced to keep using the first level phrases or your invocations willl provably never accumulate enough time to work. Chanters are far and away the worst casters in the game. Because they are not a melee based class like a fighter/ rogue/ paladin they don't get any good talents/ skills related to melee fighting at level up. What they can do, and not much else, is wear the heaviest armor a shield and a single handed weapon and use dragon thrashed. Dragon thrashed is a high level phrase so when you start using that you probably will only be able to use invocations in one in every 3 fights. I personally think chanters where one of the worst mistakes and design issues in pillars one. Unlike the cypher which was very well designed.
  13. Pillars 1 has sold nearly 2 million coppies on steam, gog, private sales and console. deadfire will certainly outsell pillars 1. What has me gobsmacked is the mis guided adventures of tyranny and torment tides on numnera, both of them complete and utter disasters in terms of sales. The devs need to listen to the market and and make games like pillars and deadfire not this other crap like tyranny and co
  14. I want to roll with meneha but am concerned I wont get her until the white march part 2 starts is that true or can I get here ealier? thanks heaps
  15. Im rolling a ranger and will eventullay get stormcaller. If I select the adventurer weapon focus talent (for warbow) , will that still give me plus 6 focus for stormcaller even thought it is a hunting bow? I wish the in game descriptions where more detailed. thanks heaps
  16. WOW. So many people finally not falling for the absolute BS statements and comments about how people on this forum slander rogues who call them one of the weakest classes. Ive have been slowly watching many long time users on this forum slander rogues because it became personal for them because they didn't want to lose an argument with previous posters. Thank you so much everyone who has come to my support and know hopefully the people who slander rogues for no other reason then they don't want to loose an argument will stop. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! A ROGUE WILL COMPLETELY DESTROY A BARB ANY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!!
  17. I have trouble wrapping my head around a ranger doing comparable damage to a rogue because I have done over 1000 hours of gameplay and from that experience of playing both rangers and rogues ( two classes I love btw)'you can tell there is a huge difference between a rogues effectiveness and a rangers effectiveness. I just dont believe that a ranger can dismantle a battlefield like a rogue can. One thing I have noticed is that a rogues crits are not represented properly on this debate and maybe it is the rogues affliction capabilty that is also not adequately presented. Trust me , rogues, if built properly are one of the most powerful classes in the game. Why do you think obsidian gave them no late level abilities ththat are any good? Thats because they thought they are overpowered. I completely wreck the game with a rogue for the simple fact they can lock down enemies one by one and kill them quickly. Unlike barbs who spread there damage out thinly over multiple targets who stand around the barb and hack him down.
  18. and yes I mixed up the driving flight/ twin arrows. but I think you no what I meant. It will be intersteing to see if kaylon did allow for driving flight or not
  19. Sigh... believe whatever makes you happy firkraag, I'm done with arguing with you over this. maybe if you tried intelligent communication instead of arguing like you yourself just admitted then you would have more success next time
  20. Okay then sneak attack and deathblows need to be removed because we really can't rely on "what happens if we have two afflictions running". You can if the situation where one race gets the advantage is reliant on having another character involved (which you yourself have precluded) but the advantage of the other race isn't. I am fairly certain Boeroer is happy to leave you with Minor Threat, he's just pointing out that your insistence that Stalker's Link should be removed is hypocritical when you're including Minor Threat, an ability with exactly the same requirements. Twinned Arrows and Driving Flight are separate abilities. As far as I can tell Kaylon didn't include Driving Flight at all in his damage calculations, and Boeroer's previous calculating correctly modified the damage for Driving Flight arrows. No he hasn't. He has assumed two hits from Twinned Arrows For an average damage calculation this doesn't matter, since the average damage each arrow does (when you take into account miss, graze, hits and crit chances) will be the same as if you treat them as a single bigger arrow. In case you don't believe this let's give an example: suppose we have two arrows that do 5 damage if they hit (so they do 2.5 damage on grazes and 7.5 damage on crits). Let's also assume that the attack is made against an Accuracy 10 higher than the target's Deflection, so they miss 5%, graze 35%, hit 50% and crit 10%. The average damage when treated as two separate arrows is: 2*(0.35*2.5+0.5*5+0.10*7.5) = 8.25 The average damage when they are treated as a single bigger arrow is: 0.35*(2.5+2.5) + 0.5*(5+5) + 0.1*(7.5 + 7.5) = 8.25 So that's at least one affliction that we're not allowing for Sneak Attacks and Deathblows. Even more reason not to allow them in the calculations I guess. Rather than merely state this why not explain how they should be represented. Explain what is wrong with Kaylon's calculations in this regard. Wow. Every single point i raised is slandered by one of boerers mates. What a surprise
