Mod or unmodded? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Unmoded. This will be my first playthrough, so I want my experience to be as 'original' as possible. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Good choice if its your first play through. This way it will give you the chance to see how the game is before installing any mods that can enhance it further.

Yes we were/are. Many of the Baldur's Gate mod tools were intimidating to the person who didn't know anything about it. Those who succeed were those who adapted and learned to use them. Hell there's even a DOS based tool called Weidu, which is great and far more functional than some of the GUI editors.
