  1. I only read about this this weekend. I thought it was an April Fool's joke. Although I also think the writers need to get back on crack(or something), you guys should be ashamed of yourselves for trashing the best show television has ever broadcast...
  2. Off the top of my head, in no particular order : - E.T.(because Jesus in an alien) - LotR : The Fellowship of the Ring(saw it 15 times... in theaters) - The Empire Strikes Back(first one not directed by GL and best SW movie) - Raiders of the Lost Ark(Best. Intro sequence. EVAR!) - American Beauty(I want to die with a smile on my face too) - The Untouchables(a mafia movie that doesn't glorify the mafia...) - Le Fabuleux Destin D'Am
  3. I worked 6 years in a Pizza Hut and we had people like this everyday. Some were much worse. We had one who REFUSED to leave until the manager fired the employee in front of him. We had to "call security" on him. It's because of people like these that I won't ever work in a restaurant again. Office work rules, man!
  4. Sounds like Bradbury alright. It also sounds like real life...
  5. Maybe the joke is that we think it's a joke...
  6. That was the nub of my thought: if the extremists / criminal overlords are able to keep outside the jurisdiction of the police, who are constrained by the use of legal means, then would it be expedient to allow some to act outside the law, in order to enforce it? And if the answer is yes, then how do you prevent them from over-reaching their mandate (effecting coups / etc)? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I suppose the question is how do you find uncorruptable men and women who could do the job assigned by an uncorruptable leader?
  7. The human brain does not make calculations like a computer does. Its superiority lies in something far greater. Mathematics are a product of the human brain. A human brain imagined it and human brain made it possible. A computer's calculating power is but a pale copy of what the current human brain can do.
  8. Self-replicating, self-directed organic computers? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> We only react to stimuli. Therefore, our surroundings direct how we react. *Again, I'm only theorizing...*
  9. What do you mean by "traditional"? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> RPGs such as the Fallouts, Baldurs Gates, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dales, Arcanum, TOEE etc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So "traditional" = D&D? What about Wizardry, M&M, Elder Scrolls, Ultima, Betrayal at Krondor, Lands of Lore, etc?
  10. What do you mean by "traditional"?
  11. First, his name is Hugo or Hurly. Second, if he wants his stash hidden, why the flashing light?
  12. <_< Fine.
  13. I agree with you completely And in many ways, cars, cameras, industrial robots and many other machines are copies of some part or concept from the human body. It's almost like we reproduce mechanically as well as biologically... Now I'm wondering if there is a relation between the drop in births(if there is one) and the rise of industrialisation/technology...
  14. The whole poker thing was a simple scripting trick to keep Jack out of the hatch. A good show. The last 2-3 episodes were very meh. This one rocked.
  15. I never mentioned decision making. The act of "making a decision" is the result of a process launched as a reaction to stimuli, no? The process activated is dictated, more or less, by your programming, which is basically your genetic code transmitted from your parents and your familly, altered somewhat by your life experiences. The brain is "like" a computer or rather, a computer is "like" a brain. *We are still comparing theories on organic vs. mechanical computers, right Atreides?*
  16. I'm not certain I correctly understand what you mean(I may need to update my virus definitions?). Are you saying something(your soul?) manages your brain so that it can manage your functions?
  17. Good point. I'd just raise this point - just because a block of wood and a lump of metal can fill the same amount space only one can conduct electricity. Thing is way we're comparing it is somewhat arbitrary but it can be different in the key part that matters (electricity conductivity or having a soul). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Or maybe those that don't have one sold it to Satan?
  18. Your brain is the computer that manages all your functions. It's not always about math and number crunching or speed of calculations.
  19. What are we if not self-replicating organic computers?
  20. How are you back on topic with this question?
  21. How can some humans have souls and others not ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ha was talking about Grey Jedi and Hades methinks.
  22. Thats why they must be closely monitored and severely reprimanded for any transgression. WARNING! This next part will seem quite fascist but know it is only part of a thought process and meant more as a question than an actual opinion or point of view of mine. If fascism or me offend you, do not read this next part... ************************** A secret police or a more "hardcore" police force could actually be needed in the near future. People have more and more rights and freedoms and individuality has enjoyed a much more important privilege than societies or even the human race. For survival purposes we may soon need to drop some political correctness, freedoms and rights if only for the greater good. Peoples ask way too much out of their Governments and if we compare a country to a job, many people would've been fired(upon) a long time ago. If I was a leader of a country(God forbid ) and I had plans to make the country a certain way but still for what I believe to be the greater good and a rebel faction would rise, opposing me at every turn, would I allow them to go on because they have the right to protest, possibly putting my country and me at risk, or would I simply have them all executed? In a game I would choose the latter without question. In real life... I really don't know. Moral implications are a barrier to the human race's evolution. Doing what is moraly right for everyone is 1- Impossible because individuality makes everyone unique and 2- Not always good for the species. Are all dictators evil or are they simply going against the moral current? "Kill one person and they call you a murderer. Kill 100 000 and they call you a conquerer." Why is murder wrong in a world where overpopulation threatens the survival of all living things? Would there be crimes in a world without laws? ************************** Ok that is enough from me today. Going back to the KotOR and Oblivion forums :D
  23. The quote from the OP makes a comparison between D&D based games and others, wether consciously or not. The quoter seems to believe that D&D based games were "Old-School" and the others are "New-School", mainly refering to FPRPGs like ES games. Such a comparison is erronous, as during Baldur's Gate's reign, M&Ms, Wizardry, System Shock, etc were also quite popular. "Old-School" has more to do with technology, interface and gameplay than simple perspective or being skill/stats based. Of course my post was not as detailed as this one since : 1- I was in somewhat of a hurry, being at work and all and 2- I consider people here to be smart enough to read between the lines. My mistake.
  24. Does the book mention what level you must be to actually have a chance to see the artefact when you hunt down it's location?
  25. I don't doubt that but they made a RPG in which levelups are completely useless. A skills system like Diablo would've been ok here but the scaling system with stats increase makes the game a FPS and not much more. If only the monsters were scaling it would be ok but items as well? In a free, open-ended environment/world? They even make the motivation for exploring their beautiful world reduced and it even cuts down replayability. Back to Vvaardenfell for me, thank you... EDIT: Edited for harshness.
