Romance Packs DLC
Fardragon replied to GadgetSun's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not every time. Go watch Casablanca. The point of which is the hero puts duty ahead of romance. -
Most people are sheep, they vote for whatever is currently fashionable. Currently, everything is zombies, a couple of years back, it would have been vampires. The thing is, whilst most people are sheep, some are goats. I.e., there is always a gap in the market for what is not currently fashionable. If you can produce something on a reasonable budget, targeting a niche market can be an extremely effective business strategy, and can sometimes put you ahead of the game. With post-apocalyptic zombies and dark brooding superheroes so fashionable, who would have predicted that a comic space opera would have been one of the top movies of 2014? Yet Guardians of the Galaxy happened.

This pretty much has nothing to do with 2D or 3D. Even with 2D backgrounds, the environments had to be modelled in 3D in the first place, so you can't really cut any production costs that way. The decision to go 2D was for nostalgia reasons (to allow a paint-over layer), not for budget reasons. It's still much more expensive to do things in 3D, or at least to do them well. You may model a 2D environment in 3D, but it only has to be seen from one direction, and never in close-up, and it never has to stretch to the horizon.

There are things I like and things I dislike about both DAI and PoE, and none of them have anything to do with the game being 2d or 3d. I think the real difference is in how much they cost to develop. 3D, being far more expensive, always has to play safe and target a mainstream audience, wheras 2d, being much cheaper, can afford to take more risks and target more specialised audiences (or simply be bigger).

Yes, PoE gets it pretty right. Early firearms where inaccurate at anything other than point blank range (no rifling), unreliable (PoE is very kind in that respect), and very slow to load. Their only advantage was very high stopping power. They where invented in the 13th century, but didn't displace bows until around the 18th. The Mary Rose (which sank in 1545) had cannon for ship to ship combat, but the soldiers where armed with longbows.

There is no reason to suppose that 3 Int in PoE means the same as 3 INT in DnD (drooling imbecile). I think of it as being more equivalent to low normal (8 Int in DnD terms). If you consider Might, you can do some direct comparisons. In DnD an average weapon does an average of about 4 points of damage before adjustments. Therefore -1 damage in DnD is around -25%. Equivalent to 2 Might in PoE. That is 4-5 Str under 1st and 2nd edition rules, or 8 strength in 3rd edition.

No one said anything about wanting to be "better". Non-specialised characters are quite capable of completing the game. Some people just play for fun, they don't need to turn it into a competition. It's a valid point about high Might being the easiest way to deal with DR, which is why I would choose a tanky class (fighter) and focus on increasing offence, rather than a DPSy class (e.g. Rogue) and build for defence. I might go something like this: Human Fighter (estoc): 19 Might 9 Con 10 Dex 18 Per 3 Int 19 Res

Raedric's Hold game crash
Fardragon replied to TheLauron's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
It wouldn't be an Obsidian game without horrible bugs, their regular customers would have been disappointed. Technically, it's not "game breaking" though, since the Hold isn't on the critical path.- 316 replies

3 Sabre Questions
Fardragon replied to metacontent's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
A flail is a farm implement for threshing grain. It consists of a number of chains attached to a handle. Weaponized, it may have hooks or weights attached to the end of each chain. You wouldn't normally use it two handed. -
Has anyone pointed out that the Lucasarts site has had 2 more chronicles added?

By attribute points do you mean ability score increases? They are the same for all classes, 1 every 4th level.

You no longer need to take a feat to use implants, but you have to have a minimum Con value, which is quite high for the good ones.

Xbox version not released until Feb 2005
Fardragon replied to Darth Grendel's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I think that the UK version should correct the spelling of armor to armour.
