It's nowhere near the level of Baldur's Gate 2 or I would say even Icewind Dale. It's a very dumbed down easy-for-everyone to play RPG. In BG2, you had to know how spells worked to adequately fight Beholders or Liches or Mindflayers. Here, there's no such thing as an enemy that's completely resistant to a certain attack, you can hit something with high Damage Reduction to fire with a fire spell and still do damage. It's all a bit too easy and combat becomes very redundant and repetitive. Many of the spells that the different classes get are totally OP and easy to roll over mobs with. I suppose if what you want in an RPG is going around reading a lot of books off of shelves then this game would be the tops in that department. But I want tactical combat challenges, and this game does not provide that.

So I'm at 8th level playing on "Hard" difficulty and the game is too damn easy. I don't feel like starting over and doing a PoTD run-through, but I do feel like changing things around to try to make the game more challenging. My current party consists of 6 custom characters: monk, paladin, druid, wizard, cypher, priest. I refuse to use any of the guns or rifles because they are OP and they just don't belong in a fantasy setting imo. I'm also considering dropping the cypher as she is just too OP and makes combat way too easy. Besides dropping the cypher, what else would you recommend for making the game harder on myself?

I have the exact same problem, and I just updated with the new hotfix patch before doing this fight. I wonder if it's the new patch? -
I've read a fair share of criticism of the stronghold, that it's nothing more than a money sink, you don't get any bonus for finishing building the thing, and you end up losing more money than making money. So I'm just wondering, what's worth building that's good? I assume the Warden's place is so you can do the bounties. Are the items in the Merchant Hall or Craft Hall worth building for them or is it just generic stuff I can get from another merchant?

Yeah, what you have to do is you have to go in the portrait folder and figure out the name(s) both large and small of the portrait your character is currently using. Take the portrait pics that you WANT him to use and change it's name to the name of the ones you are using. Rename the ones that are currently using to something else, just add a number 2 in there or something. Then put in the desired portrait pics that you changed to the name used by your character into the portraits folder. When you start up the game again, you are good to go.

Anybody have any idea where custom portraits should go on the GOG version of the game on a Mac? I seen no folder that I can put anything into. The game made a Saved Games folder in my Library/Application Support/Pillars of Eternity folder. Do I have to create some folder in there for custom portraits? Thanks.

Yeah, that seems to be the case. Bummer, I thought they leveled up when you level up, just one behind. I just went into an inn and bought a companion at first level since I'm at second level. I got to sleep, have a dream about The Watcher, I wake up and I'm level 3, while my companion is still level 1 with about 170 exp. Sigh.... If I had known I was going to level up after sleeping I would have waited until after so I could just purchase the companion at level 2. Urgh.

This is probably a really stupid question but custom companions that you purchase in an Inn will continue to level up with you (but one level lower) as they stay in the party correct? I just think it's kind of weird that you can buy a companion at different levels, does that mean that they stay that level forever and don't continue to level up? Like if I buy a 2nd level companion, is he always going to stay level 2 no matter how many times my PC levels up while he is with me?
