I do agree with you that some right-wingers are using GamerGate to further their own politics. I dislike how everyone is now championing Adam Baldwin as some kind of warrior for peace, for example, because he's a gun-toting nutjob and anyone who has been in contact with his political nonsense before this started knows it. It doesn't mean that they can't have anything useful to say on the subject even if they are doing it for oppertunistic reasons. The right-wingers using GamerGate for politics are also by far outnumbered by third wave feminists doing the same thing. Two wrongs don't make a right, but at the same time I support all perspectives being heard and the opponents of GamerGate do not. The overall marginalisation of #NotYourShield as "sockpuppets" and "weaponized minorities" prove that. To be perfectly clear, Christina Sommers is not a right wing conservative but a registered democrat and a liberal one at that. The fact that she supports first wave feminists and openly criticizes the current wave of feminists (say, those who have been using #KillAllMen to use against GamerGate) does not make ruin her standing as a feminist.

"We" dislike Jim Sterling? Why? I have no issues with the man. I respect his opinion, even on this subject, even though I support GamerGate and he does not.

Welcome back man, what's up?

Don't get me wrong, the guy's an oppertunistic shill but at least he owned up to his mistake - he did the same thing when the police confirmed that Sarkeesian had contacted them after all. Escapist may have instated a code of journalistic conduct but (and please correct me if I'm wrong) I don't recall them having been part of the journalists proclaiming the gamer identity to be awful and dying in the first place.

I don't have great beard genes myself. I'm almost platinum blonde, but my distant irish descent makes my beard a very bright ginger. I used to feel really awkward about it, but honestly it became my trademark. It's a memorable trait and I often break ice by making a few self-deprecating jokes about it. -
https://twitter.com/Nero/status/512592859439333376 It doesn't mean much, but a simple "I was wrong" is more than anything we've gotten from a game journalist at this point.

Living in Europe, I've never actually met a native american in person and I had to actually google what those obvious reasons for not being able to grow facial hair were. I had no idea. I guess you learn something new every day. -
Uh, okay. I was merely commenting on your assertion of "it's okay because other journalists have mailing lists too" and not on the content of this mailing list, but fair enough.
-
Except real journalist have gotten into trouble for it too. Ezra Klein, Keith Olbermann etc. all got fired for trying to coordinate smear campaigns or using these to control what messages go out. There was even a big scandal about one exact type of mailing list being used to smear politicians last year and a lot of people lost their jobs. I wanted to find a source for you but I couldn't remember what it was referred to as and google is only giving me stuff about Iranian journalists - anyone help?

Not to say their numbers aren't accurate, but I read some more of the CDC study on sexual violence Gromnir linked me in the post I quote below and I was seriously horrified to find "forced to penetrate someone" (i.e. a woman raping a man) was not defined as rape but as "other sexual violence" whereas only another man penetrating a man was defined as "rape". If you counteract that awful misdirection on the part of the CDC, the numbers tell a completely different story. The story often derived from CDC findings is "women are at risk of sexual violence" yet if you add up the numbers coming from the "have you been raped in the last 12 months" questions and add men forced to penetrate someone (by force, coercion or drugs) the numbers become pretty much the same (both would come down to about 1.1% in 2010). If the CDC numbers are accurate then the findings are misleadingly phrased and its use to demonstrate a rape culture against women is just bogus as men and women are both victims roughly the same amount. >_ You guys can check the study out yourself if you feel like seeing if I made an error in calculation. EDIT: Looks like I'm not the only one to pick up on that. Time Magazine points out the same woman-bias in that misdirection and more. Not sure how I feel about linking Time but I guess here it is: http://time.com/3393442/cdc-rape-numbers/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+time%2Ftopstories+%28TIME%3A+Top+Stories -
Eh, I've never been to 4chan anyway. Their attachment to the movement damaged it by way of their terrible reputation. I mean if 4chan distances itself, people pretending #NotYourShield is a bunch of 4chan sockpuppets (which they are not) have nothing to stand on.

Calax. Everybody who has jumped off the Golden Gate bridge and actually survived reported that the moment that they jumped they found themselves thinking that they wanted to live, that all the problems they had now seemed insignificant except for one: The fact they had just jumped off the bridge. This is not something I just made up. Look, first google result for "bridge jumping survivor": http://content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1197707,00.html If you do something you cannot take back, you might find yourself thinking something similar, yet you will have much longer to agonize over it and nobody will be able to help. Please, contact somebody.

if this works you will see what I am taking... If not we'll I will fix it at home. And technically the only people who can really interfere here probably won't so it's seeming more and more likely my entire legacy in this world is being shot in the head by thousands of gamers in new Vegas And you're happy with that? You can't change that legacy if you're not around to add anything to it. Look you're miserable and I get that, but I'd suggest perhaps calling a professional you know like TN suggest or at least 1-800-273-TALK (8255) might do more to help you than what you've been implying in this thread. Well I'm probably not gonna care soon. Besides, that's more of a legacy than most people leave behind, and I'm not exactly the type that'll ever get a girlfriend/wife/partner/whatever you want to call it. At least it's a fitting legacy... shot in the head by people I don't know. Calax. I implore you to seek help from a professional or even someone you know in real life. Though we can try, we are not qualified to give you advice and we are not able to help you. Please find someone to talk to, or call a help line such as Amentep provided. We cannot do anything, we cannot contact emergency services or contact people close to you. If you do something you might regret and we are the only ones who know about it, it's going to be too late.
-
Calax, I hope you figure out what your reason to continue is but I also genuinely hope you will see someone and talk about your problems. Also, I hope you don't take too much of your medication. I couldn't find anything about that specific med/brand but I hope it's not harmful. If this is some sort of "cry for help" type deal please know that as much as some of us want to help, we can't really do anything. If you feel like you may be hurting yourself or others, please contact a professional. We don't want to see you get hurt. Oh, that sucks. Are you going to have to wear one of these masks? I hope not, I always wonder how they can possibly be an improvement... Can't imagine having to sleep with one of those on. I don't know. They did ct scans, x-rays, took about a pint of my blood and stuck I don't know how many things up my nose and down my throat and soon I will have to spend the night in a sleep clinic. It's only after all the tests are done that they'll know what's causing the problem, if it's even sleep apnea, and how they might fix it. It might be as simple as fixing my deviated septum, it may be having to use one of those masks for the rest of my life or it may require complete reconstructive surgery of my entire jaw.
-
What did they call you a sociopath for? I spent most of my day in the hospital talking to doctors, getting scanned and tested. Didn't know sleep apnea was such a big deal.

Good to know Labadal. I hear ya Calax, I've been in pretty similar situations. In fact, it's not so far away from my current situation. The uncertainty of a situation like that, a lack of direction, can be brutal. But even if so, there's always something there for you. I don't know you personally but on the board I always thought of you as a nice, smart guy and I bet lots of people would be upset if something happened to you. Friends, family, hell even us. Think of us! We went through a lot already between hades and tarna. If you really feel so bad you might want to speak to a professional. It certainly helped me a lot. It's hard to find purpose if you don't know what to do but a lot of the feelings that come from that are illusions. I clearly remember feeling completely worthless even though when I look back I consider that to be dumb, I have plenty to offer and I assume you do too. I had to deal with a complete loss of self-identity at some point where I felt all my goals and possibilities were just ripped away, but even after that I picked up new things and went to therapy and found that there's still plenty of cool things to experience and be happy about. If you feel lonely, why is that? Are you isolated? Isolation is the easiest way to get depressed. Try to just hang out with one friend or family member - even if you feel you may be a burden to them, because that's very unlikely to be true. Even better, try going out or finding a social hobby. A friend of mine (not a social butterfly, I'm one of his only friends because he rubs people the wrong way and he's not exactly confident) moved to a new city by himself where he didn't know anyone, and he got seriously depressed until he decided to start going out and talking to people. It's hard to start with but a single "I don't know anyone here, anyone care to hang out?" is often enough to meet a few new cool people. I mean, obviously some guy on the internet saying you have a lot to offer isn't going to mean that much to you, but hell, you're a former superman, you can handle this like a boss. Here's a tip my therapist taught me - if you have negative thoughts about yourself, write them down in one column, and try to logically refute them in another column. That can often make you think more positively. At the same time, smile. Not just if you're happy, but practice real smiling (google duchenne smiling) in a mirror and try to do it all the time. The human brain is weird and if you fake a genuine looking smile, your brain is going to partially process you as being happy. That can help. I hope you feel better soon, and I bet you will. If it gets worse, I really suggest you talk to someone about it. If I could do it, and if Labadal can do it, you can definitely do it.

Looks like that one was published far after the article I posted so I'm guessing this is a newer study. I'll give it a read, I checked out the questions posed and the methods and it seemed pretty sound to me on a glance so I guess yours is going on top of the list for now. Thanks for the link. -
Calax, what's up? Some of your posts recently have been concerning. You better come through this, man.

You may be correct, Gromnir. In any case, here's the source I listened to: http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/economic-intelligence/2013/10/24/statistics-dont-back-up-claims-about-rape-culture I believe Christina Sommers quoted the study sourced here in her recent "Feminist Myths" video as well. Supposedly the CDC study never even asked about sexual assault, instead it would ask a question about "having intercourse while inebriated (drunk, on drugs)" and if the respondant said yes, the CDC qualified it as sexual assault. As far as I could tell, the CDC study only had a 40% response rate among college students whereas the Bureau of Justice Statistics' National Crime Victimization Survey (the study sourced in the article I posted) had an 80% response rate. Either way, I'm not going to pretend I have read the studies myself so I'm taking their word for it. You're welcome to show me if I'm wrong, I can't debate properly if I'm misinformed so I'd like to know but at the same time I can't fact check everything. -

Alright, since it's been used I removed the code to prevent others from trying to contest it (I don't know if that's possible on steam, but I've had people steal codes before) and am closing the thread. Thanks for your generosity, Mojobie! -

I believe the 1 in 4 claim has been debunked, being closer to 1 in 40. That's still way too much - that translates to 2,5% of women in college, and women in college is a huge group - but at least it's not 25%. Still sucks about your sister getting attacked, though. As always, we should condemn all abuse. -
Yeah, let's go back to discussing the subject and not other posters.

Well from the name, it's an advocate for women. Usually the case anyway, though these days I am told it is to mean someone who wants "equal rights". Okay well I'm glad you aren't suggesting it means a hatred of men or the marginalization of men. Please can you explain this to Volo, he will listen to you as you guys are both from Canada Well I know what the word means, it means where people believe in equal rights for women in the eyes of society and in the law. This is of course campaigned and implemented in different ways based on the individual case I don't know about that Wolf Wozniak case, do you have a link? http://blogs-images.forbes.com/erikkain/files/2014/09/wozniak3.png It has been removed since, but the entire lead up and aftermath can be found here, up to the point where he apologizes for bringing it up. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E3BZP3PHeQE/U_qaRte_a1I/AAAAAAAAAr0/giIdTegX16w/s1600/zqsexualharassment.PNG The problem with cases such as these is that they tend to get removed out of fear of (more) backlash. -
Chuck Norris is still alive? I saw him in an Expendables movie recently and he seems to disagree.
