  1. ^ Pretending that even a single person who complained about GamerGate actually got off their butts and "fought" harassment. At least GamerGate took action and organized boycotts and such, so yeah, apparently that issue IS more important. Social media was crying over harassment and the only people who actually took action? GamerGate harassment patrol! That should be their slogan: GamerGate, combating harassment because you're too lazy!
  2. I am a figment of your imagination. I'm reading Story Engineering by Larry Brooks. Informative and interesting, not as wishy washy as books on writing generally are. Certainly a step up from Stephen King's "On Writing" where his advice boils down to "a good story will come to you while you write, also don't use adverbs".
  3. I feel that the correct point to give up on these discussions is when they start discussing the person rather than the topic at hand (not that I consistently follow said guideline myself, as I'm not innocent of ad hominem). That guy started out not discussing the technical advantages or disadvantages of PC that the topic was about, but directly started about "PC users that write long threads" (i.e. a turnaround way to say you). At that point he's already proven to be conversational garbage and should not be bothered with.
  4. It's not possible for us to set individual or group-wide edit rights, I'm afraid. It's all or nothing with the board system.
  5. Welcome to another round of the thread that is all about you(r activities this day)! I'm taking a sick day because my stomach is being a jerk to me. That's pretty much it for today.
  6. Continued from here: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/79124-road-to-the-white-house-2016/page-27 Discuss the upcoming US presidential election here! That Bernie Sanders looks like a cool dude to me.
  7. Continued from here: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/80513-journalism-and-bias-in-the-gaming-industry/page-29 Same ol' stock description starting every thread here: For the uninitiated: The 'Gamergate' controversy was sparked in early 2013, as the release of Zoe Quinn's "Depression Quest" was criticized from gamers who believed that the game had received a suspicious amount of attention in relation to it's quality and scope. Eron Gjoni (Zoe's ex boyfriend) wrote a blogpost accusing Quinn of having had an affair with Kotaku journalist Grayson, prompting the critics to conclude that the attention and success of "Depression Quest" was due in part to unfair bias and nepotism in the industry. Several articles from both sides of the issue has highlighted inconsistencies in the stories of both Grayson, Quinn and Eron as well as the many other examples that have followed. Gamergate is wideley seen in the public, as a culture war over the diversification of gaming, artistic recognition and social criticism of video games and the gamer social identity. For the posters in this thread: Many bloggers and populists have tried to steer the discussion into areas they feel are the underlying issue - ranging from simple bias, to widespread misogny or misandry. I would however prefer that we keep this discussion as objective and clean as possible and so I will be keeping an a extra close eye on this thread. This certainly does not mean that you may not discuss any issue you feel, but rather that you should be thoughtful of how you discuss it with those you disagree with. Especially in regards to these three guidelines: Discrimination: Obsidian has a zero-tolerance policy with regard to racial, ethnic, gender, religious, disablement, and/or sexually discriminating remarks. Harassment: We ask that the users of this board treat one another with respect, even when opinions differ. Personal attacks that are intended to cause unwanted attention, embarrassment, or harm will not be tolerated. In addition, Obsidian does not tolerate disrespectful and/or slanderous posts about its competitors, developers and publishers. Such posts will be subject to editing or deleting, with its posters censured or banned. Objectionable Content: The use of abusive, vulgar or profane language, even if hidden through the use of symbols or other characters is not tolerated. Intentionally posting workarounds to our language filters are prohibited. Posts may be edited or deleted at any time by the moderation team, and depending on the severity and frequency of said posts, the poster may be censured or banned. Any posts in violation of the Forum Guidelines will either be removed or modified and authors of such posts will receive warnings and/or have their content placed under moderated review. AS BEFORE, PLEASE CHECK YOUR IMAGES FOR PROFANITY. IF THE IMAGE CONTAINS UNCENSORED PROFANITY THAT THE BOARD WOULD NORMALLY CENSOR, WE WILL REMOVE YOUR ENTIRE POST.
  8. I thought Dawn of Justice WAS Man of Steel 2. Up until now it's always been described as a follow-up.
  9. Then again Bruce, how many people could you feed with the money you spend on your internet bill?
  10. While I have little sympathy for cheaters there's a bit of victim blaming in attacking them for being stupid when it's the website that told them it was discrete who didn't have enough security to stop hackers from accessing and releasing all their data.
  11. I use Steam because I always used Steam and I have access to my entire library on it. If GOG had come first and I had my entire library on that it would be the place to go for me. Honestly I don't have problems with Steam? People keep telling me Steam is buggy and stuff, but I have never run into an issue.
  12. Agreed. Considering all the "Support@Game-Company.com" in there, I'm sure people just signed up using other people's info to troll.
  13. There are a lot of people. Looking purely objectively, more people need to die and less rhinos. It's of course a horrible thing to say and emotionally I don't want people to die, but it's the fact. Rhinos are going extinct and our descendants might never even be lucky enough to see them. That's also a very specific problem rather than "whoa, a lot of people live in poverty".
  14. Cats are better than dogs anyway. *this moment marks the start of the flame war to end all flame wars*
  15. I actually DON'T like filtering my posts down. It's like I feel as though I can get my thought process across better if I write it as I want to write it. Filtering down is only something I might do if it's crystal clear I've blatantly repeated myself. I get it from both sides, it's just annoying latley cause like I'll be randomly roaming the internet, I'll discover fans of show X and fans of show Z debating about if show Z is ****, I'll comment and provide just a bit of input from how things look from my outsider perspective, and then someone's like "LOL OMG U WROTE SO MUCH, UR OBVIOUSLY BUTTHURT AND A HUGE SHOW Z FANBOY" and it's like well **** me how do I respond to that when clearly the person has just turned my post size into their personal shield so that they don't even have to engage in a discussion with me. Lame, understandable, but frustrating lately. I get it, I don't like it either but most people won't bother to read it and not writing walls of text saves a lot of time.
  16. I do that quite often on this very forum. I have the same problem. I've been trying to get my points across in two paragraphs or less these days.
  17. Dog Soldiers sure went out of its way to set up jokes. "There is no Spoon!"
  18. Next time, just eat and smell a bunch of hot sauce. Wasabi works best. Your nose will run like a maniac for a couple of minutes and then clear up.
  19. I didn't freak out. I was at least vaguely aware that this kind of stuff happened - there was no other explanation for how randomly indie games were covered. I also know that game developers can buy comments, reviews and votes on steam and gaming websites because I used to work for a guy who bought them (of course, whether those offering those services are related to the platforms they mass bot-vote on I don't know). I've been following this #GamerGate thing from the beginning and what I said was simply my observation as to why people cared this time as opposed to all the other times games media blatantly lied about the quality of game they were advertising. I didn't really care myself until later, when the whole IndieCade racket and mass blacklisting by game journalists things started coming to light. That's something that actually affects me. If I recall I initially called people who cared idiots. EDIT: To be fair, I have been upset at things that didn't affect me during this thing. IGDA blacklisting, for one, before I realized that if I were blacklisted by IGDA (and probably am) it would mean absolutely jack **** because IGDA is nothing.
  20. In a endless runner/racing game for mobiles, yeah. There were no female characters, but we had some female models fitting the style lying around from another game. One of the menus was a bar setting, and I worked them in there. Since they were the only women, and they were in a bar, my boss made me take them out because "we are representing women as drunks". There's a culture of fear. I'm not working there currently because I decided to finish school but the money I saved working there is why I'm able to do that.
  21. I'm not sure why some other people cared so much, but indie games pay my rent so it's a pretty big deal to me.
  22. I believe I've pointed this out ad nauseum but the reason people freaked over this isn't because they were naive and didn't realize games media is bought and paid for by game developers. The reason people freaked out is because all of these subsequent scandals were regarding indie games - the one thing people did trust games media on because they couldn't pay for it. It makes sense that they don't bite the hand that feeds them. But there was a breach of trust, and then the people who felt their trust was breached were insulted. Personally, I just want indie developers to get a fair shot at coverage because of the quality of their games and not because they suck up to a clique. Lord knows its harder than ever to get noticed out there with the pollution of steam greenlight and early access ruining consumer trust. If you rely on word of mouth alone to sell your quality product chances are you're going to go bankrupt before a large enough audience notices.
