I didn't freak out. I was at least vaguely aware that this kind of stuff happened - there was no other explanation for how randomly indie games were covered. I also know that game developers can buy comments, reviews and votes on steam and gaming websites because I used to work for a guy who bought them (of course, whether those offering those services are related to the platforms they mass bot-vote on I don't know). I've been following this #GamerGate thing from the beginning and what I said was simply my observation as to why people cared this time as opposed to all the other times games media blatantly lied about the quality of game they were advertising. I didn't really care myself until later, when the whole IndieCade racket and mass blacklisting by game journalists things started coming to light. That's something that actually affects me. If I recall I initially called people who cared idiots. EDIT: To be fair, I have been upset at things that didn't affect me during this thing. IGDA blacklisting, for one, before I realized that if I were blacklisted by IGDA (and probably am) it would mean absolutely jack **** because IGDA is nothing.

In a endless runner/racing game for mobiles, yeah. There were no female characters, but we had some female models fitting the style lying around from another game. One of the menus was a bar setting, and I worked them in there. Since they were the only women, and they were in a bar, my boss made me take them out because "we are representing women as drunks". There's a culture of fear. I'm not working there currently because I decided to finish school but the money I saved working there is why I'm able to do that.

I'm not sure why some other people cared so much, but indie games pay my rent so it's a pretty big deal to me.

I believe I've pointed this out ad nauseum but the reason people freaked over this isn't because they were naive and didn't realize games media is bought and paid for by game developers. The reason people freaked out is because all of these subsequent scandals were regarding indie games - the one thing people did trust games media on because they couldn't pay for it. It makes sense that they don't bite the hand that feeds them. But there was a breach of trust, and then the people who felt their trust was breached were insulted. Personally, I just want indie developers to get a fair shot at coverage because of the quality of their games and not because they suck up to a clique. Lord knows its harder than ever to get noticed out there with the pollution of steam greenlight and early access ruining consumer trust. If you rely on word of mouth alone to sell your quality product chances are you're going to go bankrupt before a large enough audience notices.

Don't you get paid in advance? Seriously though, I hope you find a more fulfilling job soon. Doing a job you hate can be numbing.

That sucks man. Selling your body to science an option?

To be fair, as a European I pay very little attention to state news. Like I said, the impression has grown mostly from headlines and you know how sensationalized those are. Ethics in journalism and all that.

I believe the politically correct term is "maroon". Source: Bugs Bunny. I was under the impression (solely created from half read headlines linked on facebook and twitter) that California has been teetering on the brink of bankruptcy for a while now. I don't know how true that is, but considering all I ever peripherally hear about california is "bankrupt" and "forest fire" I can understand that people might think that.

I didn't say it needed WoW numbers to be a success. There's no need to get upset. In fact, I think WoW numbers were a complete fluke. But they've all underperformed compared to the lofty expectations publicly set by their developers or publishers, which is why I would say they are "failures". I could change the goal posts and redefine failure to something else and they might come out good. SW:ToR has a good subscriber base now and is one of the biggest MMOs out there, so on that level it is now a success (though it took some time getting there) but if I recall correctly EA termed it a "WoW Killer" so on that level it failed spectacularely. I just mean to say that WoW was a fluke and the audience for MMOs is much smaller than WoW makes it seem - so WoW 2 seems very unlikely.

Have you talked to Kreia? If you truly finished each planet she should tell you to go to Dantooine to confront the Jedi masters. Anyway, getting ready for a theme park trip with my ladyfriend tomorrow. "De Efteling", a dutch theme park that I believe is the 4th most popular theme park in Europe and is also one of the world's first theme parks. Walt Disney famously went there to get inspiration for the original Disneyland. They opened up the Bolligar & Mallibard brand coaster (they're the Bentley of Roller Coasters) in my country so I gotta try it out. It's a dive coaster too, which I haven't had the pleasure of riding before.

I double featured Pixels and Fant4stic. In hindsight, I should have seen the resulting headache coming. Pixels was awful (with the exception of Peter Dinklage) but it was miles ahead of Fant4stic. Oh my god. Don't see Fant4stic. Don't make the same mistake I did and give them your money. If you have to see a bad movie, pick Pixels instead. At least it has a couple of neat CG moment and Peter Dinklage. Fant4stic has NOTHING. It's three quarters boring exposition and one quarter Batman and Robin.

I'm not sure if a multiplayer mode would be a satisfying gaming experience. I feel that there's a very large playstyle disparity between classes. I think whoever is playing the tank will give one or two commands for a big fight while a caster will be constantly pausing and doing things. Fun for the caster but the person playing the tank will be bored to tears. Doesn't seem fun if you have to draw straws who gets to take on the most fun roles. I'd rather see Obsidian focus on new excellent features instead of a feature that with the current game mechanics can at most be "okay". I had fun with friends with Baldur's Gate multiplayer but even that was fun because of the friends, the game itself had a lot of frustration. There are a lot of other games that can provide a satisfying gaming experience while still being fun with friends, if Obsidian added multiplayer I can't see Pillars of Eternity being one of them. Just my two cents on the matter. I wouldn't mind if they added a multiplayer mode like Baldur's Gate. I doubt they will and I just don't think it would be very fun.

A WoW 2 is unlikely. Other than WoW, all large MMO's were by and large failures (no offense to people who enjoy SW:ToR but it is hardly the success that was expected). I doubt even Blizzard can capture lightning bottle twice - they don't even seem to be able to keep people playing their current MMO and they scrapped their last MMO project and turned it into Team Fortress by way of MOBA.

Here's the thread to discuss new video game developments and announcements! Enjoy your speculating and concerns.

New thread poppin' up shortly.

The game dedicated to discussing your daily experiences in the videogames you are currently playing. Last posts from the previous thread: the place of cinematics in a game depends on the type of game. in a game like soul reaver they are fine. in a game like the witcher they would totaly defeat the purpose of the game if they were everywhere. i was reading a manga about a new artist in a game development studio and her (mis)adventures as she learns the ropes of the job and it had a really interesting bit of info on the game they were working on. an npc had to die while the hero escorted her from one town to the next but they did not do it through a cutscene, instead they had a combat encounter on the way where enemies would spawn endlesly until the npc died in battle. so, while the story said "she dies here", they left the player with the illusion that if he tries hard enough he may be able to save her (without knowing that the enemies will keep spawning until the npc dies)

Talk about your "self defense tools" designed to kill other things here. Lasts posts somehow without quote attributions because the quote system is being insane: Off the top of my head: all the high quality Browning (US) shotguns sold for a couple of grands are actually made in Japan by a company called Miroku. Also there is HOWA which is a Japanese company making many firearms, for the civilian market they produce bolt action rifles for Europe and the US which are famous for their quality and affordable price. There is also the rumor that the action of a certain rifle from Winchester is identical with the HOWA action, according to rumors thats because Winchester buys the actions from HOWA. I do not have enough information and/or proof to either deny or confirm that, but its entirely possible though as stuff like that happens all the time. And speaking of selling under different names, Remington is selling shotguns originally made in Russia by Baikal and also rifles which were designed and manufactured in Serbia by Zastava. (The mini-mauser series for example). And if we go down to parts it gets really interesting, for example Steyr Mannlicher in Austria has outsourced the barrel manufacturing to Romania a couple of years ago, and Accuracy International Australia (AIA), all the parts for their rifles are manufactured in Vietnam and shipped to Australia for assembly. I owned a rifle from AIA and the quality was questionable where it counted the most. And those are just a few examples.

I was at Gamescom yesterday, and I was actually quite disappointed with it. I realize that it's a massive convention and to play the demos you have to wait in line for several hours, but it annoyed me that the most high profile titles were all in their own walled off spaces. If you didn't want to play, but just wanted to take a quick look to see other people playing it? Out of luck. I didn't so much as catch a glimpse of Overwatch - it was completely walled off on every side. And for the largest Games Convention in the world with supposedly international appeal that is partnered with the UK, it was wasn't very international. Every single presentation I saw was done by a German host or dubbed in German. Oh, and there was an entire floor of merchandise of which there were two small stands of video game merchandise, one small Blizzard specific store and everything else was anime, comic book and tabletop stuff. All in all, I think I actually saw substantially less games content at the biggest Games convention in the world than I do whenever I go to tiny local games conventions. I did have fun talking to a lot of indie developers and did some networking.
