  1. I did say that some of the earlier links weren't valid anymore. Try this one from lower down.
  2. What E_Motion said From a post of mine on the GameBanshee forums:
  3. No problem, just glad to help...
  4. Yup, just open swkotor2.ini (in the C:Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR2 folder by default in the US/UK version; and you might want to make a backup copy first, always a good move when hacking .inis) using notepad (or your favourite text editor). Then find the heading [Graphics Options] and add Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 on somewhere beneath that heading. Then save it over the original. If you are not seeing .inis, then most likely your OS has been set not to show them. To get around it, try this: open Windows Explorer and look for Folder Options in the Tools menu (assuming Windows XP). Click on the second tab, View and make sure that Hide Protected operating system files is unchecked. Then click Apply and OK. * EDIT * If you are searching for the file, then make sure Search has been instructed to look for hidden and system files. * MORE EDIT * Sorting files by names, you should see swkotor2.exe in the top level folder, swkotor2.ini should be just underneath, followed by swplayer.ini and swupdate.exe. Swkotor2.ini is the only one to change.
  5. Check page 7 - Advanced Tweaking in the Tweak Guide from my earlier post.
  6. Remember Attons comment about "Being careful... otherwise you'll fall for hours"? Yes, Nar Shaddaa is supposed to look like that. I know it doesn't make sense, but consider the prequels high altitude visions of Coruscant (and that of JK:A for that matter). Immense drops are Star Wars, no question.
  7. What JK:O has - that Star Wars had in spades - is verticallity. How many catwalks and platforms where there over apparently endless drops in the OT? Lots. Did any of these have "Health and Safety" approved handrails? Nope, don't think so. Not even invisible walls. It is an essential component of Star Wars-ness, like blazing away at one end of a corridor at baddies at another without seeking cover or even moving and still the baddies always lose. Admittedly JK:O was grey, but it was run-down grey, not KotOR II's bright and shiny grey which doesn't fit the image I have of Nar Shaddaa.
  8. What amnesia? You don't know how you got from the Harbinger to the medical bay on Peragus, because you were unconscious at the time. You don't know what has happened in the last ten years (Jedi Civil War) because you weren't there, you were in exile in the unknown regions. You know who you were, Jedi, General in Revans' army, and the one who brought the final battle to its conclusion at Malachor. The only point where you apparently don't know what is going on and maybe should, is the introduction of Bao-Dur. But it has been ten years, and the name has been forgotten, and one Iridonian is much like another, and you commanded a fleet so why should you immediately recognise him? What KotOR II does is lay in the plot for the future of the game by revealing the past as you go along rather than spoiling it all by having too much exposition at the beginning...
  9. Commiserations, perhaps we can help CTDs do happen, but are quite rare (at least for me). Perhaps you do have a driver problem. Any strange behaviour with other games? You mean that the black "widescreen" bars sometimes fail to appear top and/or bottom? Then the subtitles appear overlaid on to the game background and are hard to read? Yes, that happens after a period of extended play. No known workaround, but if you save, quit and restart things should be back to normal... The old Bioware game engine is showing its age. In areas where there are is a lot of smoke (Peragus and Malachor) the game slows down as smoke is rendered for the most part by the CPU, not the graphics card. Dantooine is also particularly bad. The central plains area around Khoonda has a lot of NPCs (and Kinrath) going about their business, with complex models (Khoonda itself) and the game engine can't cope very well. It is particularly noticable as you approach the bridge to Khoonda from the west. If you are using an ATI card the Disable Vertex Buffer thing should work for you, otherwise it's just a question of compromising between graphical detail and speed. Have a look at the Tweak Guide for more info. Again if you are using an ATI card, KotOR is quite sensitive to the version of graphic driver in use (the newer versions - 5.4 to 5.6 - have quite a lot of KotOR fixes, and the older versions - 4.11 and earlier - have fewer broken bits in the ATI OpenGL driver). You could also try the mod from this thread. It is a new version of texpacks.2da which doesn't contain any nasty assumptions about the memory of your graphics card (which are reasonable for the XBox, but not for a PC). On my rig it is good for an additional 10 FPS (before: mid 30s FPS dropping to low 20s for the busiest areas, after: mid 40s FPS dropping to low 30s for the busiest areas, all according to Frapps). Why would you want to cheat? It isn't a hard game. I use the Hardcore Mod to make it harder. If you really want to cheat there is some info here... And, yes, dufflover, I'm hoping he's not a native english speaker...
  10. First, the Qixoni crystal not a colour crystal. Second, although the crystal is limited to a dark-side alignment, an LS player can use it if they put it in a saber that has the yourname crystal from the caves on Dantooine. That's why there is a mod on pcgamemods to allow you to use Force Persuade to provoke a fight and get the crystal without DS points...
  11. It's only the repair skill at workbenches for breaking down items that is a special case; everything else uses the currently controlled NPC character's skills. This goes for creating items, but it also goes for breaking down items at a lab station. I don't know why the inconsistancy - no dev has ever commented and the manual is useless (quelle suprise) - but workbenches are certainly easier to abuse (Bao-Dur should be nearly at 15 repair skill by the time you get to the first workbench in the Telos Military Base, which is quite early on). As regards efficiency of other skills, I think that Treat Injury works the same at a lab station, but I don't use lab stations enough to claim to be sure. Creating items can require skill levels up to 29 (including bonuses of course).
  12. Colour crystals as random item drops follow the random loot system. This means that the rare colours - Silver, Orange, Viridian, Cyan and Bronze - are less likely to appear that the basic colours - Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet; particularly during the earlier level ups. Cyan and Bronze crystals are particularly difficult to get hold of. Playing it straight you could go through from beginning to end and never see one; but you can save the game before you first talk to a vendor (which is when his inventory is first fixed; * EDIT * it is footlocker/canister loot that is fixed when you first enter an area, by the way, not shopkeepers; too many people rely on this behaviour *) and keep reloading that game until his wares are to your liking. There is another way - without messing around with vendor's inventories - but it isn't as certain. Always check the lightsaber drops at a workbench (or with T3-M4) for the colour crystal they contain. It appears that the crystal is totally random, or, at least, much less likely to be affected by the rarety of the colour. I do reasonably well for rare colours this way.
  13. Maximum efficiency is acheived with a repair skill of 15. A higher skill is not required for breaking down items, but can be helpful for creating some of the better items. But, of course, you can use other NPC character's repair skill for creating items.
  14. The problem with that, of course, is that the version on my CD #1 is 901KB long (UK version). If the installer is looking for one that is 924KB long then that won't work either. Incidentally, assuming you have an international version, then the some of the files in the docs folder (at the very least manual.pdf) were corrupt on the CD due to an error in the duplication process. The 1.0A patch did little other than correct this. And, it would appear that manual.pdf is broken again after the 1.0B patch. * sigh * Unfortunately, if this file was touched by the 1.0A patch then this file has changed twice and restoring the original file from your's or anyone's CD won't work, either. You would have post and pre 1.0A patch files on your machine and the installer would be even more confused than it is now. You'd need the 1.0A version from the same international version as yours (and I think now that mine is a different version to yours). I think reinstalling may be the only way unless you are very lucky...
  15. Two posts up, mate...
  16. In case anyone else is interested in having a play with Stoffe's work, the thread in which it is discussed is here . Be careful; it is an evolving mod and the earlier download links aren't live anymore...
  17. Yup. If you play as a male PC, you don't get Disciple. You know there is more to him with the "You look familiar" line, but the cut scene that plays upon the return to Khoonda wraps that storyline up nicely. As a female, you don't get Handmaiden. Again, you know there is more to her with the pleading tone in her voice when she asks you what it is like to feel the force, but there is no explanation. When you finally return to the Academy it is mysteriously empty; no Handmaiden, no sisters, no resolution. There are other imbalances - romance and the fact that a female PC can't get Battle Precognition, for example - but that's the one that really sticks in my mind.
  18. Yup, I was thinking that after I hit send. The installers' looking for 1.0A version, I thought, to replace it with 1.0B version and I just sent the 1.0B version, so that won't work. Unfortunately, you need someone reasonably technical, with a mind to help, who posts on the Technical Support Forum and who hasn't patched a buggy game yet. Slightly rarer than rocking horse poo, methinks. I think you'd have time to reinstall and upgrade several times over before you'd find such a person...
  19. I don't think there are any DS points on offer; you just get talked down by Kreia, I think...
  20. Precious little sits between the Video driver and the Video hardware; except the chipset AGP driver, but, if that were at fault, how come the problem manifests in Direct Draw (the 2D component of DirectX) but not Direct 3D, which is much more complex (* EDIT * Corrected myself here, as KotOR uses OpenGL not Direct3D). Besides which, you are talking about drivers that shouldn't be upgraded without a real good reason and a pair of rubber safety pants. Still suspicious of Direct Draw, because the bink player FAQ page (this is the software which is used by KotOR to play the movie scenes) makes numerous references to it's dependance upon Direct Draw and what can go wrong with it. (Have a look here.)
  21. Perhaps that's why Mira and Handmaiden go on about travel in hypersapce taking so long... :">
  22. Dantooine is probably the best bet. If not the female scavenger, then buying the parts from Joran can yield two colour crystals; one of them should be good. The Rodian vendor on Nar Shaddaa doesn't seem to have crystals until you've sorted out Dantooine. The Onderonian vendor (the one with the soldier watching him) has crystals, too. And there is a cannock on dxun who will probably have a crystal if you have already completed a saber.
  23. I hear you. The male PC skins are awful; the fair, bearded guy is the only one I can stand to play. Most of the female PC skins are just fine...
  24. Transferring content between games is considered a big no-no by LucasArts. They tend to come down quite hard on people who try. You would have to start from scratch. Assuming that the appropriate ability to animate clothing like that exists in KotOR 1...
  25. Quite right, the game won't let you go below 800 x 600 and I should have known better than to suggest it. Just in case you missed the edit:
