Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic III [rumored] Also known as: Star Wars KOTOR 3, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3, Obsidian Project #3 [untitled] Blogs Boards Guide FAQs Cheats Reviews Previews News Features The third chapter in LucasArts' RPG exploration of the Star Wars legacy. NOTE: This game has not yet been announced or officially confirmed by the publisher. Exact plans for which platforms this title might release on are also unconfimed at this time. Unofficially, the game is expected to be one of three next-gen projects in the works at developer Obsidian Entertainment. That's what the link said.

To be honest, if KotOR III was in development anywhere, we'd have seen some leaked info about it somewhere on the web. I mean, head on over to Warhammer Online's official website and there was a great response over there made by one of their devs regarding leaked info. The interviewer asked what will Mythic do to prevent spoilers and other leaks from hitting the net. The dev's answer was something along the lines of, "We will put about as much effort into stopping leaks as we do trying to stop the sun from rising each day." I think I totally butchered that, but you get the meaning. The point is, with a game as highly anticipated as KotOR III, there's no way in Hades that there wouldn't have been leaked info about it somewhere by now. However, that doesn't mean that they can't give an announcement at Celebration IV.

Don't know if anyone else has said anything, but, where in bloody hell did you hear this? Could you please provide a link? I mean, it just doesn't make sense that they would announce a non-Star Wars game at Celebration IV, which is an event celebrating Star Wars. Also, I think Mr. Sansweet specifically said that they will be announcing two Star Wars games. I'm not saying one will be KOTOR 3, hell, it's probably Lego Star Wars or something. But I'd just like to see a link to your info if at all possible.

Perfectly stated. That's why I said this is more like a single player RPG than an MMO. You have the main quests, which are marked in your quest log as "Epic: Book 1, Chapter 1" or the like, and then you have dozens of side-quests you can accomplish if you so choose. The side-quests are no different than any other MMO. Those are the "kill 20 field rats" quests I was talking about. Some of them are annoying, some of them are more involving, but as Hurl said you do get benefits for doing these quests aside from XP and materials for crafting. LOTRO has a deed system. This is the de facto reputation grind. By completing a certain number of quests in a zone, or by killing a certain type of mob a number of times, you are rewarded with either a title or a trait. This is so much more effective than the endless rep grinds we saw in WoW. The traits provide buffs to your base stats once you equip them. For example, I play a Lore-master. The stat Fate is very important to my character. I currently have a deed quest that calls for me to kill a number of orcs. Once I do that, I get the trait Friend of Man, which adds +20 to Fate. For me, that is an ENORMOUS buff that affects my damage output and how often my abilities crit. At the moment, there are no specs or attributes for your character, so you don't have to put points into anything every time you level. This could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. Good in that you don't have to worry about other players asking you "What spec are you?" every time you join a group, bad in that some players might want to have the option of specializing in something or bolstering a certain aspect of their class, such as melee or healing. But the game is still new so there will be changes in the future. I would also be curious to know if titles that you can earn will reward you with a discount at certain vendors and may also provide you access to certain quests and gear once you earn the title in the future. All in all it is the aspect of storytelling that got me hooked. The cinematics every time you complete a major main storyline quest put you, the player, DIRECTLY in the midst of the events of the books. You are aiding Aragorn or Gandalf as Frodo and Sam are off on their journey, but the game goes out of it's way to make you, the player, feel important and unique as much as an MMO can. Which isn't very much, but they make a solid attempt to do it. It's really put together quite well. It's all about immersion and that's what really nails it for me.

Just saw over on IGN that LOTRO has unseated WoW as the #1 seller in PC games in it's first week of release. That may not seem like a big deal, but WoW has been so utterly dominant that it has been #1 for nearly three years. After playing WoW for a couple years, I switched to LOTRO, and I must say, I've been having a blast. And you know what makes LOTRO such a fun game to me? It's the one aspect that most MMO's sorely lack: the story. Yup, that's right. The story. The one aspect of any MMO that is usually an afterthought. Most MMO's treat story as if it were a hindrance to the advancement of raiding dungeons and acquiring "phat lewt." But because LOTRO is based on the universe created by Tolkien (and specifically the books, not the films), it can't NOT be based on the story. Playing LOTRO has made me fondly remember single player RPGs from BioWare and Obsidian that were story-driven and focused greatly on immersion. It's still an MMO and is subject to the mindless grinds and "Kill 20 field rats" quests that characterize every MMO, but I think it's a refreshing step in the right direction. Anyone else playing the game?

First of all, I hate my forum name because it makes me sound like a Star Wars fanboy instead of just a geek for pretty much all sci-fi and fantasy games and lore. But anyway, I digress... I honestly believe that a KOTOR MMO would be...well...fantastic. Here's why: It takes place about 4,000 years before the events in the movies so this gives any development team, whether that's BioWare or Obsidian or whoever, a LOT of room to be creative. They are not so much beholden to the movies as no single character from that era is alive during the KOTOR era. Second, the timeframe of the KOTOR stories is just more interesting in my opinion. They really are. Maybe because it reminds me so much of midieval tales of triumph and tragedy, high adventure and romance, and mystery and intrigue. This is the time when the Jedi numbered in the thousands and their mortal enemies, the Sith, were also numerous but hidden, ever lurking somewhere out there manipulating events to meet their agenda. And no one ever really knows what their agenda is. Again, this gives any developer mucho creative space to work with. That's important. And if you say an MMO is not story driven, then you obviously have not played Lord of the Rings Online. That MMO is ALL story. Almost to a fault. A KOTOR era MMO also would justify why there would be thousands of Jedi players running around the world and, I would assume, thousands of Sith players running around as opposed to SWG, which took place during the era of the movies. The lore for it is already built in. Of course they would have to address the KOTOR 2 storyline about hardly any Jedi left, but again, since this would take place so long before the movies, they could come up with a reason. The KOTOR era is still undiscovered territory, and frankly, it's an artist's dream. Any creative person should jump on an opportunity to stretch their creative legs by developing a KOTOR MMO. However, all that being said, I would still like to see Obs develop their own IP, as I just think they're not the right company for a Star Wars game, but a great company for their own IP's.

KotoR 3: Ideas, Suggestions, Discussion

I'm a little confused myself. I saw the original thread which has since been locked with that screenshot, but I didn't read the fine print. Was the SS from a different Star Wars game or was it in fact, something that was unannounced? -

From what I read from the LA link, they only said they weren't going to leave KOTOR behind. That could mean any number of things. It could very well mean a KOTOR era MMO and not necessarily a third installment to the franchise. I know that's unlikely, but you never know. At any rate, I'm glad to hear LA will be involved with KOTOR again someday. -
Heh, fired up KOTOR 1 on my PC again
Darth Jebus replied to Darth Jebus's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Okay, so I've run into an embarassing snag. I just downloaded a mod that would allow the PC to wear Revan's robes on the Star Forge - the real Revan's Robes - and even though I'm playing DS, the only robe available in the bin are Revan's LS robes. I will admit I'm new to this whole modding thing, but downloading the mod was really straight forward. I followed the Read Me file to the letter and all of the mod files are in the Override folder where they are supposed to be, so I'm thinking something else is wrong. Interestingly enough, even without the mod, the only robes that are showing up in the bin are the LS Star Forge robes regardless of your alignment. Did I do something wrong? -
I've played through the original KOTOR mulitple times on my xbox, but haven't played it in years. Just because I was feeling nostalgic, I actually went out to my local Best Buy and bought a copy of the game for PC, seeing as how I've never played it that way. And as immersive as the game was on xbox, it is even more so on my PC. It's hard not to get caught up in the game when you've got your speakers and your subwoofer blaring KOTOR music and dialogue, and vibrating your floors with the sound of lightsabers. It's been so long since I've played it that I forgot how to do some things. And seeing as how I've never played it on my PC, I actually had to sit through the tutorials. Anyway, just thought I'd share. It's still a great game and a great gaming experience. Even if for old time's sake.

Will this game run on a laptop with 1.83 GHz and 1GB of RAM? Just curious. I have to go on a business trip this weekend and I wanted to play it on my laptop. I have no idea what kind of graphics card I'm using. But the laptop itself is only about 3 months old or so. I didn't get it for gaming obviously, it's for work. I just don't want to wait to play this game.

I would like to see a new IP. Don't let my stupid name and avatar fool you. I've been over Star Wars since about a week after the release of RotS. I liked KotOR 2 but think that it was riddled with technical problems and huge gaps in the storyline. I wouldn't mind seeing a third KotOR to finish out the trilogy, but, I just don't think OE should be the dev house to do it. Why? Not because they didn't do a good job with the second installment, they did the best they could under the conditions provided to them by the publisher. And also, that was this company's very first game, and I can't think of a bigger project to cut your new teeth on. No, I would like to see them do a new IP precisely because of what they did on KotOR 2. The concept of the storyline in that game was indeed very deep and mature. I'm not talking about the actual aspects of the gameplay in and of itself. I'm referring directly to the main storyline. I won't go into it here even though the game has been out for about 2 years now. You can check the KotOR 2 spoiler section for all that. But suffice it to say, the storyline was original, deep, and unique and screamed for an IP, in my opinion. I said back then, and I'll say it now. I REALLY would like to see MCA and co. dig deep into their own creativity and give us an RPG that is set in a totally original setting with completely original characters. Like how PS:T was when it first came out. Just my 2 cents.

Kinda nice to see Bio still supporting the original NWN. They've just released a new mod that is available to play today. And according to their site, this mod features new tilesets, mounts (yes!) and an immersive storyline that has about 20 hours worth of gameplay. I don't know about you, but I'll definitely be checking this out. Sorry if I'm rather late for this but seeing this made me all nostalgic. It's a chance to play in the original Neverwinter one last time before the sequel comes out in a month or so.

KotoR 3: Ideas, Suggestions, Discussion
Darth Jebus replied to LadyCrimson's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I can tell you I KNOW that no one is working on K3 at the current time. This means that the game, if ever even done at all, will not be coming out next year. Nor will it be coming out in '08. If we ever see a K3, it will be released in '09 or, as I said before 2010 at the latest. I'm taking into account a two year development cycle since the game will be on an all new platform with an all new graphics engine. Not to mention putting together what I would assume to be an all new crafting system with new skill sets and also a new Workbench Interface system. KOTOR if done right, is a massive game. KOTOR if done improperly (read KOTOR 2) is a half-finished product that leaves the player feeling like their play experience was incomplete. If the game is announced next year, you have to assume it will not be out a year from that announcement. It'll take two years at least to deliver a KOTOR game worthy of it's name. And sorry, but that's just not the LA way. They'd much rather pump out Legos Star Wars and Battlefront Star Wars games that are relatively easy to make, don't require much thought to play them, are exclusively aimed at the 8 and under crowd, are extremely easy to market for, and will be out by Christmas with the next one after that already in the works. That's how it works with LA. -

To be honest, I don't think we'll see a KOTOR 3 for a while. Since we didn't hear anything regarding K3 at E3 this year, I think K3 won't be in the works for at least a couple years. IF LA or OE announces K3 next year, then you have to figure we won't see it until '08 at the earliest, and, if done right this time (i.e. delivering a finished product with a complete storyline and such) '09 or possibly even 2010 at the latest. And that's not even taking into account developing the game for an all new platform with an all new engine. So, even though K3 may indeed be quietly in the works at LA (and by quietly I just mean developing the new story and characters and who the PC might be, not actually working on the game) or even here at OE, I just don't think we'll see it for 2-4 years. Maybe longer. I'm betting on longer. -

One other thing about that link, it says that IGN predicted Kotor 3 would be released late this year or early next year. And it said that back in January. If that were true, I know we would have heard something by now. Even if LA or OE never made an official announcement. There would have been some info on it floating around the internet. And I don't mean little snippets of information. I mean huge amounts of leaked info, including screenshots, story info, NPCs, and the engine being used. I mean, keeping it quiet? No amount of secrecy save for the type of secrecy employed by the NSA could keep a game the magnitude of Kotor 3 under wraps. Hell, during the years and months leading up to the release of each prequel movie, fans on the internet knew the exact story, characters, cameos, villains, release date, locations, and sometimes even the title long before LucasFilm mad any official announcements. So, unfortunately I have to say that info in the link is outdated and no longer true. -

Of course its not really official, but its good news for those of us still holding our breath. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's hard for me to take any "source" seriously that can not even spell Obsidian correctly. I'm not saying any of that is bogus, it's just that they would go a long way in looking more credible if they at least spelled the name of the company supposedly developing the game the way it is supposed to be spelled. <_< -
Absolutely. Could not agree more.

So, in light of all the talk surrounding a BioWare MMO Studio in Austin, TX, and my horrible addiction to WoW (which is now thankfully subsiding after about a year of play) and also because of NWN 2 only a few months away from release, I decided to try out the multiplayer aspect of the original Neverwinter Nights. Needless to say I had no idea what to expect. I've had the game for a looooong time and never even tried the multiplayer. I just didn't have any interest in it. In short, what I found from the various mods and servers out there for NWN is that the majority of them suck. Seriously. I mean, there was some really retarded stuff out there. But most disturbingly, aside from all the "Adult Only" servers there, I found that the multiplayer was no different then playing an MMO. In fact, it has some cool features an MMO doesn't have. The only real difference, other then you don't pay to play it (although some servers do ask for "donations" to keep them running) is that nothing in the game is instanced, and you can whisper the DM anytime you want depending on the server guidlines. There are even several different types of servers. Some are story (PvE) while others are action (PvP) where you can be attacked and killed at anytime by a level 30+ epic sorcerer casting some truly outrageous spells that can one-shot you. Now, even though it depends on the server guidlines, it's kind of unnerving to know that you can be attacked, robbed, or killed by any other player with a chip on their shoulder. I mean, if I wanted that I would've played Ultima Online or Dark Age of Camelot. Now the reason why I said all this was disturbing was because the general consensus on these boards is that peeps would rather be subjected to a tax audit rather then have to play an MMO. In fact, the only thing that seems worse than an MMO on here are those evil console games. Yet, the Neverwinter Nights Multiplayer is....well....a Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Sans the massivley part. So I mean...WTF?

:D I also knew what it might look like. But no, that's not my intent either.
