All the really great things about this game
Yst replied to vortexwx's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I guess I'm even more of an optimist, because I actually like the final dialogues. I could do without the boring action bits, but the dialogues are worthwhile enough. -
Who tells this type of misinformed person where to find the OE forums, anyway, such that they can come here and post pointless factually inaccurate whine threads in the General forum? I naturally suppose this type of person to be typically under the more common SW fan understanding of franchise mechanics, at any rate: that all things which proceed from the Star Wars franchise are at some point miraculously pooped out of George Lucas's bum, and they mysteriously get to the store shelves somehow thereafter. Where did OE come into the equation? There are lots of that type on the LA forums, at any rate. Who told these guys where to find Obsidian?

Congratulations to LucasArts and Obsidian!

Wow. What a painful waste of a registration. Too bad you had whatever technical problems you had, but you won't get any sympathy for registering just to make a thread complaining about it in the General Discussion forum. Please move on. -
This was indeed a very good idea for a thread.

Carth and Mission: Legal as long as he's not in a position of power...in Canada. Laws may vary from world to world. Handmaiden and Visas: I don't see it working, but it's amusing. Canderous and Disciple: I actually think this is sexy. Malak and Atris: Creative. I like it. Yuthura and Luxa: Makes sense. Mira and Bao-Dur: Best conventional romance of the bunch. T3 and the Remote: Heh.

Should The True Sith Be In Kotor III?

Playing as a red-skinned insectoid race from a desert planet? Imagine the romance subplot. -

They can just use the Gizka model. But give them force storm. -
Who do you think should/will make KOTOR 3?
Yst replied to Craftsman's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Another out-of-left-field suggestion: The former Westwood (Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore, Legends of Kyrandia, Command and Conquer) guys at Petroglyph Studios have been working with Lucasarts on Star Wars: Empire at War. Watch them pick up KotOR 3! -
Who do you think should/will make KOTOR 3?
Yst replied to Craftsman's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Unfortunately, as there's no way to extricate Lucasarts from the KotOR 3 development process, I really don't care what happens to it. My disgust with the official Star Wars franchise business at this point is sufficient to quite honestly hope that Lucasarts develops it internally and it's an abysmal, horrific, disasterous failure. Why hope for the success of this franchise, when other franchises don't have such money-hungry morons at the helm? There are lots of franchises to choose from out there. I don't feel the need to root for one with such terrible management when there are lots of other options. But such a failure harming the franchise business isn't really likely. They've proven they can sell garbage merch and garbage movies for wads of cash. They'll presumably continue to do so if they sell garbage games with garbage product support. Lucasarts could release Pong of the Old Republic, in which two monochrome "lightsabers" bounce a square "blaster bolt" back and forth across the screen, and it would sell like hotcakes. My hopes for RPGs lie elsewhere. I want to see what the guys at Bioware and Obsidian and Bethesda have in their futures, but I think any of them being subjected to Lucasarts' interventions would only be a detrimental influence. Perhaps my one hope might be for the possibility of Bioware developing KotOR III, not because I think they, necessarily, are the most talented, but because their prestige and importance in the industry is such that Lucasarts asinine attempts to impose destructive dev schedules (this was not their only one-year dev schedule) and ham-fisted interventions could not authoritatively assert themselves so as to destroy the project if Bioware asserted their own authority. -

Yeah, as much as I like a good sig, a sig like that can make the Do you wish to view members signatures when reading topics? box's [No] option look increasingly attractive. I mean, holy crap, it's almost a meg. And to think I bothered to compress my sig gif down to 26KB with a lower color palette than I originally had used.

And the really creepy thing is after spamming thread after thread after thread with exactly the same badly misspelled nonsense paragraph throughout the forums, so as to troll as many places as possible at once, last night, he appears to have gone and edited all his prior posts to say something other than what they originally said. He had originally posted somewhere between 12 and 15 responses to existing threads which read Then he went back and tried to erase the evidence, after everyone told the guy to stuff it. Man, I've seen some screwy trolls in my day, but this guy's a real champ. Such dedication to this socially defective dork-dance. Remarkable.

What is your favorite alien language?
Yst replied to Scarlet's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Anyway, as for the "for linguists only" suggestion...why? None of these are languages in any meaningful sense at all. No grammatical systems, no inflectional paradigms. Just arbitrary sounds (without even any formal phonology behind them) assigned meanings in English. To take an example from outside the franchise, even Klingon isn't really considered a language in any meaningful sense. It's more of an English pidgin, with all native English words suppleted by invented ones. But at least it has some limited formalised phonology (not really anything in the way of formal morphophonemics). And back to Star Wars and linguistics, the idea of Yoda's dialect possessing distinctive or unique grammatical characteristics which can be formalised similarly falls apart, as much as fans have tried to formalise it. All its constructions are just somewhat erratic variations on pre-existing American English constructions. You can talk about the way it spins around typical 20th century American English word order in unpredictable and unformalised ways, but that's all there is to say about it. Really, among Sci-Fi franchises, Star Wars has about as much to say about alien linguistics as Plan 9 From Outer Space. -

I'm Glad there weren't any Selkath in this game. Not a big fan of the slithery, slimy sounds of that language. -

I hope someone capable of banning this idiot is on the watch. He just keeps posting the same text in thread after thread. Check out the guy's post history.

So I'm in the Sith Caverns on Korriban playing a DSM Sith Lord, I did the Kreia/Friends encounter, fought Kreia and she killed me, which is fine (+DSP), went, did the Revan encounter, and he killed me (+DSP), but Kreia's speech failed to trigger, and the door failed to open. I was stuck in the cave with nothing else there (well, except the infinite Hsiss respawn), no encounters left, but the door still locked so I couldn't exit. I tried reloading from during the Kreia encounter and killed Kreia instead, went and did the Revan encounter and killed Revan instead, but once again, the speech failed to trigger and the door failed to open. I tried a third time, this time again killing Kreia and Revan, and again, still locked in. At this point, I don't know what I can do to make things work here. After playing the encounters three times, two different ways, I'm presuming that any other way I spin it, the door's still not going to open. Any thoughts? I'm open to suggestions as to how I could hack around this, if anyone has any ideas.

Is Anyone A Bastila/Carth/Revan Trio Fan?
Yst replied to Bastilla_Skywalker's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I don't like that they made Bastilla such a shrew in KotOR 1. Such a boringly outdated stereotype to build a character around. Revan's fine. I like the backstory for Revan the moreso after having played KotOR 2, which expanded on it. Carth I could give or take. He was tolerable. -
A "finished" verson of KoTOR2 from Obsidian?
Yst replied to romeo_longsword's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
If you mean Trials of the Luremaster, that isn't a similar case at all. There were complaints that not Icewind Dale itself but the Heart of Winter expansion was too short. So they released more content for free as the Trials of the Luremaster expansion. -
Indeed, the other incarnations aren't alive, nor were they trapped their during their lives ("there" isn't a place, anyways, per se). They're submerged elements of TNO's self coming to the surface. Only TNO is trapped there, and he's reconciling himself (and/or destroying) these submerged past selves.

Do you find yourself creating the same character?
Yst replied to romeo_longsword's topic in Computer and Console
I tend to play intelligent, male, do-gooder mage-type character. I find it most impossible to play generic fighters, or physically-focused characters of any kind save rogues. I just can't make myself do it. Especially not when Int or Wis checks are involved. Generally, I find myself playing Chaotic Good Male Mage-type characters. Virtually never female (can't get into a female character), virtually never fighters, virtually never evil, or even neutral. -
Japanese tentacle monster rpg? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The Lady of Pain and, the presumed inspiration for her character, on which my sig draws, has not generally been described as such, although, actually, she was once parodied as such, in response to Swinburne's portrayal.

I hate to resurrect a much-belaboured point, but the reality is, as frustrating as it is (and this is one of the reasons I don't particularly favour SW as an RP universe) to make behaviour characteristic of the Dark Side something other than behaviour of the cliche villain type would be to diverge from the Star Wars canon. Star Wars DS villains make cliche evil choices, because they're cliche evil villains, because the Star Wars universe is a cliche Good vs. Evil fantasy universe (both its great strength and its great weakness), and the Force is the deus ex machina plot device that insures good is really, really good and evil is really, really evil. One could of course ignore the nature of the Dark Side completely and just make up the KotOR version of the Dark Side which has nothing to do with Star Wars canon, but I don't think that's a preferable option, myself.

TSL Restoration Project: Work in Progress
Yst replied to Aurora's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Changing Nihilus' level or stats seems quite simply to be outside the intended scope of this mod. This isn't the "make the game better in every single way just for the hell of it" mod, it's a content restoration mod. The question for me isn't whether it's a good idea to modify Nihilus' stats. The question is whether modifying Nihilus' stats contributes to the fulfilment of this project's objective of restoring content. And the apparent answer is that it does not. There are a hundred mods out there for a hundred different things, and there will be hundreds more by the time this is released. This project doesn't need to do everything all at once in a single mod. There will be others who do the little tweaks you want. It just makes sense to leave changes which are outside the project's intended purpose outside it. They can exist for their own sake, and that's all well and good. But there's no reason to try to turn a mod focused on a very extremely involved but specific purpose into a mod which is not only very extremely involved and elaborate, but totally non-specific in intent.
