Honestly, I'd probably buy a few hundred acres of land in one of the big western states, maybe Wyoming or Utah, then I would build a place like this: http://www.bestfriends.org/atthesanctuary/animals/dogs.cfm I'd quit my job obviously and spend the rest of my life working my sanctuary, reading all the books I've always wanted to and maybe writing a few of my own. Oh that would be so nice.

This probably has to do with the perception of the nation. Afganistan didn't have much said about it's current politics before the US went in, plus the citizens were caught up in the patriotic "kill 'em all" fervor because AlQ was in there. Iraq didn't have the open opposition or the leader who said "My people love me and would never want to hurt me" while his troops were firing weapons on civilians. I'm sorry Calax, I don't remember where you stood on the Iraq invasion. But for the sake of agrument let's say you opposed it. If Hussein was bombing and gassing his own peoole would that have changed your mind? On that note, if McCain were president and he was doing exactly what Obama was right now is there any doubt in your mind the same people who are lauding Obama would be protesting against and castigating McCain? They would not give a dried rat turd how many people Gadahfi killed or how he did it. Kudos to Congressman Dennis Kucinich who it an absolute nut job in my humble opinion but at the very least he is consistent in opposing military action in Libya was he was anywhere else in the last 30 years. That in itself is a very rare quality in the modern politician.

I see Wals is still wrestling pigs. It might be a dfferent pig but the "oink" sounds the same. Then again maybe it is not a different pig, who knows. You know what the say about wrestling pigs Wals. Now as to the Libya thing, the older and wiser I get the more I realize the very best thing the United States can do is revive and implement a modern version of the Monroe Doctrine. Involving ourselves in Libya, defending people who will, without a doubt, seek to harm us later from people who, without a doubt, mean us no good will now makes no sense to me. I do find it ironic that many of the voices in the US who were so opposed to intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan are perfectly fine with intervention in Libya. It seems people will suffer any evil so long as they like the man in charge at the time.

And, is it a worthy sequel? So far so good

Just finished reading Chief of Station, Congo: Fighting the Cold War in a Hot Zone by Larry Devlin. VERY interesting read. It's a memoir by the CIA station chief at the US Embassy in the Congo during the Congos move to independence and subsequent civil war. A great perspective on history and I learned a lot about a part of the world I knew little about (central Africa). Now reading Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

Well said! As to Oroguns post, I participate in three or four boards including this one and I lurk on a few others. As for why, I guess it is jst for the "conversational" value. I've been posting with some of the folks here all the way back to the BIS days, more than 10 years now. Unlike the other boards I visit there are a lot of folks here from Europe, Austrailia, New Zealand and other places so you get to hear a wide range of opinions and life experiences which is really what appeals to me about this forum.

That was a tounge-in-cheek comment on my part because there are legions of idiots who blame every phenomenon, natural or otherwise, on "man made" global warming. It is as most of you seem to get, ridiculous. But they are out there, I'm just suprised they've been so quiet.

You do realize he is not someone taken very seriously right? On a tangent I've been waitying to see who would be the first to blame the quake on global warning.

I've been working on a project at my job for 18 hours a day for a while. And at night working on a rewrite of my book. I am so utterly sick of THAT thing. Plus I can't seem to take my eyes off the news coverage from Japan. Unbelievable.

So you want to work in the video games industry...
Guard Dog replied to Nightshape's topic in Way Off-Topic
LOVED that video, and the one Enoch posted. Most dream jobs are anything but it seems. It's funny, I have the job I work now because my last company laid me off. I did not want this job and was just planning on using it to pay bills until something better came along. As fate would have it, I really like the job now. I've had the chance to broaden my knowledge and move more into structural and mechanical engineering (rather than RF/electronic where my education and experience came from) plus it is not all that difficult since so much of it is determine by simple physics. Plus I'm one of less than fifty guys in the US who do what I do. Hmmmm you'd think I'd make more money then. My last job was high stress and high pressure, always trying to do more with less and do it faster. Not at all unlike game design I guess. I can tell you for sure that was not for me. Personally I don't see how these guys haven't picked up a drinking habit. Can you imagin having to make a Sponge Bob game? -
I finally got the rebuilt engine back in the car I've been restoring. It is a cast iron b***h doing that alone. I bought an air compressor and I'm building a tent house to do the painting myself. Time to start looking for new seats. Not long to go now!

George RR Martin has fianlly finished A Dance With Dragons it seems. It now has a firm publish date. I guess it's time to break out the other books and start remembering what the hell was going on in them. It's been a while. http://www.georgerrmartin.com/news.html

Shhhh, nonono don't give them any ideas! No more TV shows into movies! Actually Miami Vice was pretty good.
-
The real problem is the movie business really is out of ideas. Which I find amazing because print & electonic fiction has never been easier to produce so there should be no end of excellent novels to adapt.

Did you have headaches with this frequency before your concussion - they look weekly at the moment, and I didn't notice it before. Off and on. Every now and again just get them recurring like this and then it'll settle for a few months and then start up again. My mother and sister both come down with really stinking migraines.. While I tend to get more regular grinding headaches. I guess it's that balance.. I'm happier not having the migraine versions..but I seem to get the "lower level headaches" more often. Stress? Or injury side affect?

I'd have to agree actually. The soundtrack along with the setting and visuals actually made the story take a back seat. It had a deep sense of distopian sadness. I think that is the lightning in the bottle they will not be able to recapture without descending into parody. Hollywood can make a pretty good movie when they put their minds to it but most of the time I don't think they really get WHY a movie was good. That makes it impossible to repeat.

Just got back from a work road trip, it was nice. I was back in Florida, went back to Palm Beach to see some friends, thought about calling the ex but decided against. After business was concluded I spent a few days watching the Rays, Twins, Red Sox, Orioles & Yankees in srping training. Just got home and found out the Astros released my nephew. He's bummed but he's going to college at Stetson in Tampa over the summer so he'll be ok. He did get two seasons and for all the rest of his life he can tell stories about how he was a professional baseball player for a time.

Probabilities of it being any good are pretty small. I remember watching one of the highlander sequels in a room full of people, they said that iconic lone "there can be only one" and someone shouted out "There should have been". it was funny. Just look at the last Indiana Jones movie for how bad a sequel can be,

Bummer that it came to that. Hopefully things will improve once you move. Good luck!

Heck Arch, why give them a choice? If you think they are so miserable just round them up and do it for them if they want it or not. Then you could even process and cook them and feed them to the pople in prision right? Solve two problems at once. After all if you are going to propose an absurd notion, why not take it all the way?

What are the scariest movies you have ever seen
Guard Dog replied to Gorgon's topic in Way Off-Topic
I'd have to say "The Exorcisim of Emily Rose". It wasn't scary in that you could not get to sleep afterwards, just disturbing. Especially given the facts about the actual Annalise Micheal case. One of the best movies for creating an eerie atmoshphere was The Village. But it was not scary, or even all that good really. The Blair Witch Project was like that too. Most horror flicks are dumb to the point of being comical. Usually the more serious it takes itself the dumber it is. -
I just found out I won the lottery!
