  1. That's true. Dodger stadium still looks a lot like it did in in the Sixties too. Wrigley has had a LOT of structural upgrades over the years. Dodger stadium too but it looks a lot more like it's original self than Wrigley. The old ballyard in Chavez Ravine has really aged gracefully. My favorite FED name was Pittsburgh Rebels because it was based on such an obscure historical event. But one I've always been fascinated by.
  2. Weeghman Field under construction in 1912. It was built for a Federal League team. Obviously that didn't work out well. But ultimately it was used by another team that made it famous. And it's still in use today 110 years later! This is what it look like today:
  3. Biden has nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson for the SCOTUS. I've never heard of her before Breyer announced his retirement. A quick read on her wikipedia page it seems like she is a decent choice. Not someone I'm going to find a lot of common ground with but neither was Breyer. She is coming from the DC Circuit Court of Appeals which has been a conveyer belt to the big courthouse on First St. She might even have some bi-partisan support. Actually I don't see any reason to oppose her unless something dishonest about her turns up. Seems unlikely. The Democrats turned Supreme Court nominations into a bloodsport with Bork and Thomas and literally every one since. The Republicans quickly followed suit. Hopefully it's time to put an end to that s--t. @Gromnirdo you know anything about her? Other than common knowledge. Edit: If it had been up to me the first AA Woman on the Court would have been Janice Rogers Brown. Seriously you guys need to write my name in in 2024. You might not like everything I do but I'll cure what ails this country!
  4. Not a lot of good news in the baseball world these days. But we can always remember better days.
  5. Trump praises Putin's 'genius' incursion into Ukraine Hold up here! What the hell did I just read here?????? Are you f---g KIDDING me? Did that son of a bitch just suggest we invade Mexico? As for Putin's "genius" I've always noticed how dictators stick together. I guess that includes wanna-be's. I'd wager in 1938 he'd have been praising Hitler for invading Austria. The similarities between this situation and that are striking.
  6. I comes down to this: no one is going to go to war over Ukraine. Sanctions are all well and good but when so much of Europe buys oil from Russia they won't last long enough to matter. To steal a great line from a bad movie there are only two courses of action in life, what we can do and what we can't. Stopping Russia from invading or kicking them out now that they have falls into the latter category. Unless you are willing to go to war over it. And that will likely mean nuclear weapons of it goes badly for Putin.
  7. @GromnirIMO only it would have been better to ignore the chant. Don't give the fire any oxygen and it flickers out. Maybe she didn't know what was being chanted but it sounded pretty clear to me. Better to ignore the pig than put lipstick on it. It's pretty crass to chant that about anyone. A president deserves no special exemption from being insulted that way other than the fact it's crude to do it. But it's going to happen. But either way I wouldn't feel too sorry for Kelli Stavast. She came out of this unscathed. I had to google to even remember her name and it did not come up on the first search item. Nor the fifth or sixth.
  8. Let’s go Brandon: Driver caught in unwinnable culture war I feel bad for this guy. He had just won his first NASCAR race and had every reason to be happy in the moment. Then a news reporter says something stupid (maybe she really believed what she was saying but I think not) and he has literally been dragged into a political mudpit against his will.
  9. I watched News of the World on HBO Max tonight: I read the novel it was based on a few years ago. The novel tells a bigger and longer story but this was a pretty faithful adaptation as movies go. It's definitely worth your time if you like historically authentic movies.
  10. Wary of Being Left in the Dark, Americans Produce Their Own Power I was ahead of the curve at my old place. But having moved up from Florida and weathering numerous hurricanes I had first hand experience how fragile the public power system is.
  11. Playing the '71 Oakland A's in OOTP 22. The big difference is I signed Jonny Bench as a rookie in the '67 season so no Dave Duncan. So far in 12 years of playing OOTP I have yet to win a WS. And, much like the real '71 A's it looks like I'm going to have to beat the Orioles to have a shot at it. Also OOTP 23 will be announced next week it looks like. They are getting my $35 no doubt about it.
  12. LOL I can imagine her reply: "Dear Brother, ever heard of CTRL + F? Found it in two seconds. Here's your $20, use it to buy a book about Windows."
  13. The Fed explained in one meme
  14. A little less friendly I'd say. But I don't get out much. Most of my day I'm working. Aside from my cousin and her family I don't know anyone nearby so whatever friends I have here are really Gail's friends. But I have gone on calls with her a number of times to help and that has been a great experience.
  15. LOL not as prepared as I used to be! I had the perfect homestead to survive the fiscal apocalypse but I sold it. But @Amentepis, of course, correct. He usually is. There really is no need to worry about anything. If I can do something about it there is no need to worry about it and if I can't and it's out of my control there is still no need to worry.
  16. Scientists Make Breakthrough in Warping Time at Smallest Scale Ever When I want to make time speed up I just play Crusader Kings 3
  17. No way. Jim Webb would have made the best President on the Dems. But he had no shot because he was a Blue Dog, Vietnam Vet AND a war hero (Navy Cross) and wasn't a communist. He wasn't into social justice and didn't think Fidel Castro was the greatest leader of the 20th Century so he had no shot of being nominated. But he would have been a competent and moderate President. Not flashy, not in the news every day. Bob Bullock in 2020 was in the same mold. Ditto for Bill Weld on the GOP side in 2020. In 2016 there were a number of GOP candidates that would have made a decent and competent caretaker of the executive office. But with the crazies controlling the nomination process candidates like that will be culled out every time.
  18. He is an impulsive and irrational actor. Exactly who you don't want in positions of power. The problem with life is you get the test first and the lesson after. But don't be too harsh on 2016 America. If the other candidate had been anyone other than Hillary Clinton he would never have won I think.
  19. IMO Star Trek ended the day Voyager got home. But, it was on life support after the last episode of DS9. Everything that came after was trash. In other more important news Paramount is making a mini-series about Bass Reeves. If you don't know who that is believe he's well worth five minutes on Wikipedia. If that's too much he was a runaway slave who became a US Marshal. And he was more of a badass at it than Wyatt Earp, Bill Hickock, or Frank Eaton ever were. If you DO know who he is I think you'll agree it's about time!
  20. PJ O'Rourke He's been out of the spotlight for a little while but he was a big name in columnists in the 80's & 90's
