There are 1.9M service member in all four branches counting reserves. That would mean a percentage of 0.008. There is no way the military, an occupation that for many reasons might not appeal to the trans would have a HIGHER percentage than the general population. It would either be the same or less. The last paragraph addresses that bit: There is other evidence that transgender individuals represent a larger portion of those in the military than their proportion among adults in the US population. In a survey of transgender people assigned male at birth, Shipherd et al. found that 30 percent had served in the military, which is similar to military service among transgender people assigned male at birth in the NTDS. 9 A recent study by Blosnich et al. reviewed all health records of veterans receiving health care through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) from 2000 through 2011 and found a prevalence of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) five times that of the US general population.10 Though individuals with GID diagnoses may or may not identify as transgender, the substantially higher prevalence of GID among veterans in the VHA system provides further evidence that transgender people are overrepresented in the US military. My guess would be it has something to do with the appeal of service. The military has always been popular as an option for those struggling to find their identity. I was looking at it more from a perspective of folks with gender dysphoria already having a clue about themselves. At any rate this hearkens back to a discussion you and i participated in not long ago about the benefits of gender-reassignment surgery. I still disagree with you and assert it is an elective surgery. A man who identifies as female and has an operation is still a man afterwards. Just with a few bits moved around. Ditto for the women. It is superficial, skin deep, a nose job. If they want it, more power to them but don't ask the tax payers to cover it for you. It's... very besides the point. The whole idea of gender identity preserves and even strengthens the notion that character attributes are attached to biological gender. No man can identify as a woman, they can only identify as female; and vice versa. I do think these people should be able to do whatever the he'll they want, but as a political ideology it is very counterproductive when what should be archived is the separation of biological gender and character. What I'm trying to say is that you can't try to liberate women from their submissive role in society and at the same time propagate the idea of identifying as a woman (as in, identifying with the female character including of course said submission). It's contradictory to say on the one hand "you aren't born a woman, you are made a woman" and on the other hand to say "you can be born a man but truly be a woman". So yes. Can we please shift focus back to further liberation instead of wearing down past progress? It's also possible that it is a result of trying to overcompensate, if you follow my train of thought. Some trans people can feel they need to prove they are more manly than what they are deep down, and it's definetly seen as very manly being in the service. So your feeling is that transgender people are not mentally equipped to handle military service, I take it? That seems like a pretty serious accusation, and also a slippery slope. Are women unfit for duty? Hormones and all that. There already is a mental health requirement for enlistees in the military. The only thing that should matter is if the person can pass that, regardless of anything else. Lets be honest, the military is going to attract some head cases.
