Zoraptor Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I'm not Keyrock, but they're both worth buying. The first in particular is hard and both use 'proper' physics rather than the arcade physics you get in something like Wing Commander though the 2nd is a lot more forgiving in that respect, and you need a decent joystick for both. They both still look great as well. 1
Keyrock Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 (edited) @Mamoulian War - They're quality space combat sims. They have some trading, though nothing as robust as Elite or the X series, the games are very combat-focused and very good. The games use Newtonian physics, like Zoraptor mentioned. The first one has significantly more complicated and in-depth controls, they're both quite good, though. Both games will kick your ass too, they're rather challenging. For my money, for pure space combat, nothing beats FreeSpace 2, even if the physics in that game are more arcadey, but the IW games are rock solid. Keyrock Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Do you know by any chance, if it is possible to fly with Xbox or PS3 controller, or it is waste off effort as flying with keyboard? I mean, you can play these games with a gamepad, particularly the second one, since it has simpler controls. I'm sure people have made profiles for gamepads for these games, particularly popular gamepads, like the 360 controller. You're still going to need the keyboard for some things, a gamepad simply doesn't have enough buttons, but the bulk of what you'll use in combat can probably be mapped to a gamepad. Of course, it's never going to be the same experience as with a proper flightstick. RFK Jr 2024 "Any organization created out of fear must create fear to survive." - Bill Hicks

Humanoid Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Gameport to USB adapters are a thing, but can be a bit hit-and-miss in terms of properly converting the inputs. Might be worth it only if it was a reasonably good flight stick back in the day, otherwise just buying a new stick would likely be more cost effective. For that blend of old-and-new, CH still make the exact same iconic flightsticks they made back in the 90s, but with a USB interface. That's the route I took personally, since all the flight sims I play are rather ancient. Might change with Star Citizen of course, then I might have to buy the throttle, something I could never justify as a kid back in the 90s. L I E S T R O N GL I V E W R O N G
Zoraptor Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I played both games with a USB/ game port converter on an old MS Sidewinder joystick and that at least was fine in terms of reliability and control fidelity. Definitely needed some keyboard input as well though.

Bartimaeus Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I think the company is literally called "CH". http://www.chproducts.com/13-28464-Home.php Quote How I have existed fills me with horror. Keyrock Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 I would imagine the C and the H probably stand for something, maybe the first letters of the last names of the founders or something? I'm playing Satellite Reign right now and I'm enjoying it.
