US Election 2012...the aftermath

Btw, having to pander to the extreme in the primaries and then move to the center is not unique to the Republicans, Democrats do that too (hence Hillary lost). The party activists who are the most influential are normally more extreme than the party.

The difference being that the more extreme Democrat base does not hold, unlike extremist Republicans, completely and utterly insane views.

Clearly I've got a lot of catching up to do on this thread but it is looking more and more like Gorth and Enoch are going to be right on where they go with the upcoming mandatory spending cuts. Taxes go up, modest cuts in the rate of spending increase will be agreed upon (and largely ignored after the fact) and spending will increase which utterly ignores the root of the issue. So we kick the can down the road again until the next time the government hits the debt limit.

BTW you all do realize the secession petitions were just a little political protest not an actual movement right?

I like the petition that's currently reading about "Let's abolish the current legal system and establish a Hall of Justice with bike riding police acting as judge, jury and executioner". Last time I checked it had 950 something signatures..

And they say Americans don't see the appeal of Judge Dredd as much as the English do... :shifty:

Well, most american cops on bikes probably wouldn't be able to get fire. After all, he'd actually need to pedal..

May be you don't consider them insane because they're closer to your own.

People are pretty serious about it though, it may yet become a movement, at least in Texas. There's a Huffpost poll that something like 28% of Americans support their state seceeding.

What's the difference between an extreme Democrat and a regular Democrat? Is it only the far-left who support gun-control and socialism?

What's the difference between an extreme Democrat and a regular Democrat? Is it only the far-left who support gun-control and socialism?

It depends on what you mean by "socialism". If you mean the government actually existing and being able to spend money, then no. If you mean the government owning everything, then yes. On "gun control" there is a bit of a difference between barring automatic weapons used in warfare from the general populace and the guvernment takin away ur guns, most conservatives don't seem to be able to understand that, seeing as everytime gun control is mentioned, they scream about a conspiracy to steal their guns and destroy 'merica.

People are pretty serious about it though, it may yet become a movement, at least in Texas. There's a Huffpost poll that something like 28% of Americans support their state seceeding.

People are also serious about Ron Paul and Libertarianism, most still think it is bull**** though.

In the wake of the Liberal Party coming into power in Canada, there was always a push by some in Alberta that felt they should secede as well. The election is only a few weeks old and people are up on their soapboxes.

Is it wrong of me to giggle when a guy named 'Wiener' wants to ban nudity?

As for Michael Moore, he's always struck me as a tabloid reporter trying to create a cult of personality for his own personal gratification.

Funny, "Democrat" does not appear 1 time in the article.

They do? I thought he was like the Left version of Glen Beck, everybody seems to hate him.

One of the issues with Socialism in america is that it's been used interchangable with the Russian Communism and the USSR. So if you mention a social program that's technically "Socialism" people will look at you and ask "Do you support Stalin?"

I'd love to see Matt and Trey do a parody of Alex Jones.

Millions of Alex's paranoid zombie fanbase.

They won't find out. Straying from the guiding light of Alex's truth will expose them to the New World Order which will devour what shards remain of their pitiful souls.

Although I was pointing out that in Alberta the same thing happens and the same people go "I don't know it seems pretty legit this time."

I think that right now folks are scrambling to turn their views towards a more mass market than anything. Killing the "No tax" pledge is gonna go a long way to making the party viable in the long term.

Sanity breaks out in Washington as a compromise on taxes is reached in the Senate. Hopefully the House will follow soon.

The far right/tea partiers in the House will do anything they can to sabotage it. These are people who were voted into government on the promise that they'd destroy the government from the inside, after all.

A zombie plague outbreak would have sounded more likely =]

Still, they need to work on getting those debt levels down (moving the ceiling wont help) or they'll end up like Italy.

Yes the teabaggers are flailing around like children because they can't get their way. How is this different from any other day?

The House is set to vote for the bill without amendments. It's obvious that this is the best deal Republicans could have gotten. One could even argue it's a big victory for Republicans. After a decade of attacking the Bush tax cuts as benefitting only the wealthy, the Democrats finally agree to make almost all of them permanent.
