Monte Carlo Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Hi What type of movement will characters be able to do in this game? I know that flying and riding horses are popular demands, but actually one of the things I really enjoyed about Diablo 3 was jumping around. Diablo is an isometric game, right? Well, the barbarian gets to leap around. You can move to different areas / layers of the map with a mighty leap. It's visceral, fun and adds a dynamic that makes the character distinct. So will characters be able to go prone / jump / crouch / climb? Cheers MC
Phekdra Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Makes me think of Ultima 8. Please, no... Still playing through Planescape Torment...
Humanoid Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 (edited) U8 was okay once targetted jumping was patched in and the platforms stopped moving. :D My fear though is that LC will end up making a bunch of videos with full-party synchronised aerobics instead of playing the game. In all seriousness though, the problem with having fancy movement modes is that it's hard to implement on a party-scale. In a single-character game it's simple enough to jump over a fence. Having to jump a party of sixish over a fence would either be repetitive micromanagement or trust that the AI won't screw up its pathfinding trying to follow you. WorstUsernameEver Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I've always advocated for more environmental interaction in fantasy RPGs/dungeon crawlers, but I'm not sure an Infinity Engine-style game would work well with stuff like Diablo 3 jumping.
Nakia Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I would like something like Monte Carlo suggests. I don't care for fast travel. Prefer a transport system of some kind although I do get bored back tracking through dungeons, caves, ruins that have been cleared out. Arcanum had that exit spell, either scrolls or a mage spell that took you to the exit of the area. That would be nice to have. I have but one enemy: myself - Drow saying
mkreku Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I'm hoping for ragdoll physics. That would be the only thing that could interest me in using magic: set of a fireball in the middle of a crowd and watch the bodies flying. Maybe this game isn't for me.. OldRPG'sAreGood Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I wouldn't be against a jump function, or atleast if it can be used in certain places. For example, a character could not jump all the time with a push of a button, but instead when this character comes across a narrow gorge, there'd be a jump option there. So I don't really care about "jumping around", but I do care if there is an option to jump in places where it'd be actually needed or useful. Dude, I can see my own soul.....
Solivagant Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Climbing has long been ignored by these games, and there has to be some way to implement it. One of my favorite memories of D&D was looking at the Player's Handbook and reading up on all the climbing gear you could get. Dragonblade of the Obsidian Order No sleep for the Watcher

Climbing was actually one of the reasons I fell in love with the Gothic series of games (although they only used climbing for the first two parts..). Also, swimming and diving. An RPG with lateral movement and worlds built with not only one plane in mind! Imagine that! Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Hassat Hunter Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I'd rather have it be incident based (*climb fence, jump over bridge*) rather than an action for characters. In an isometric-based party system RPG it really has no function. ^ I agree that that is such a stupid idiotic pathetic garbage hateful retarded scumbag evil satanic nazi like term ever created. alanschu Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Not true at all, especially if the layout is still rendered in 3D. Now you're climbing on rooftops or over walls and literally opening up different ways players can approach puzzles/quests in the game.
Darji Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Omg please not. Maybe if it uses stamina or is restricted in some way. But every time ? No thank you. This is not Wow.
Tamerlane Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Unnecessary... ... but gives me warm memories of rubbing up against building corners in Daggerfall until I reached the top then jumping from rooftop to rooftop.
dan107 Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Honestly, I cannot imagine a circumstance under which a game is any more or less enjoyable for me if I have the ability to jump around.
