I want to go to Russia, badly. But need an excuse.

I like Germany. And Berlin is one of my favourite cities in the world.

Ugh, I absolutely despised Berlin both times I spent longer than a few days there. It's okay for a day or two, then you run out of things to do and the rampant tourist consumerism based environment makes all the WWII based history and remembrance seem vaguely celebratory and far too profitable, as if people are grateful for the many atrocities because it pays their bills now. It's enough to leave a sour taste in the mouth of any rational thinking person. And it doesn't help that the poorer neighbourhoods are practically ghettos for arabic people. When the local McDonalds has windows that are marked publicly as bulletproof glass, you know something must be wrong.

EDIT: Of course, seeing your new post about actually being there when the wall went down, it may have been different for you and hold fond memories. I've been there a couple of times in the last seven years, perhaps it has changed. All I really saw when I went there was the seedy underbelly. They have a nice zoo, though.

^ Yes, it has a certain raffish charm. You need to kind of explore a bit, maybe head south to the lakes. Although Berlin is really about sneaking about bars all night.

Perhaps that's why I didn't like it as much as most of my companions. I'm not much of a drinker - I used to be, but alchohol poisoning will ruin such a thing for you pretty fast.

When we were at Odessa, the Russians ...

Russians lol. Odessits are Jews.

I just came back from Berlin myself.

Incredible city with beautiful architecture (lots of contrast too between old and DDR-old), no litter, everyone was properly dressed and behaved very politely and proffessionally. People stopped by the red lights even if there wasn't any traffic in the opposing direction + it was very bike-friendly as well. Hell, even the graffiti seemed to have some sort of aesthetic value in itself in contrast of the streets being so clean. All of this added to a sense of sincerity that i haven't experienced in most countries.

Compared to most other bigger cities that i have went to, i would gladly call Berlin a "Hoghcult

I once drove through Germany from north to south, ending up in Idar-Oberstein. Quite the experience.

Bustrip, completely unmemorable stretches of autobahn and crappy rest stops. Except for the Alps, which really are quite beautiful. I started longing for that boredom once we hit Italy and there were little shrines to traffic accident victims every mile.

Of course, the really bizarre thing that amuses me when I think back on it.. it was the early 90's, and half the tourists going onshore were wearing nike trainers and shell suits.. which amazingly, really stood out in Russia at the time.. :shifty:

Hell, some of the crew walked up to a cop directing traffic and gave him some dollars for his uniform hat and he was quick to take the deal..

Actually, talking of Russia, I visited Yalta and Odessa back in.. oh, hm, must have been '93-'94ish.

I've been to visit Germany, saw Danzig and Stettin?

Yups.. like KitKatClub and Insomnia. :p

I last was in Germany in 2008, it was fun visiting bars just when die Mannschaft were taking names.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

Oh, i forgot. It is absolutely mandatory to visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuschwanstein when visiting Germany. The place is simply breathtaking + you will really appriciate it either if you're a Wagner or Gabriel Knight fan :p

I lived in Schwerin for a year. Really didn't liked it, because the people where so... strange. Probably because I was growing up in the east, where stuff is different...

There is so interest because they are osties too.

And I grew up much more in the east.

Note: This was not meaned as a east / west hit.
