Why we post on Internet forums

At first it was because I could talk to people that have/had common insterest with me. Mainly video games, but as that has essentially fallen by the wayside, so too has my posting frequency. Now it's just a ligering habit. How depressing that sounds.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

And it isn't always easy to find people who can understand the same pop culture / nerd references that you sprinkle around naturally..and then wonder why people look at you strangely irl.. :shifty:

you can literally set your watch by when I start to get cranky & impossible to get along with if I can't be alone for a while.

Sorry, that just struck me as very familiar. Lock me in a room with real live people and I stare longingly at the exit after only a few hours. I generally hate intrusions into my privacy sphere.

This place is nice and familiar and can be visited in both small and large doses at my own discretion. No companionship is forced upon me (hey, you taking notes Obsidian?). As Guarddog said, you get the width and breadth of international society, hearing views that you wouldn't believe existed. Between the surreal and the real, it's a great source of learning and entertainment in one nice package :)

Socialization is mentally tiring & does not typically energize me. Even w/spouse or best friend, if away on a trip (that constant togetherness) you can literally set your watch by when I start to get cranky & impossible to get along with if I can't be alone for a while. Ppl who need daily (or even weekly...) contact/validation in order to feel 'close' aren't ppl who remain friends for long.

But internet interaction doesn't tire me out in the same way (you can choose the level of interaction/involvement) & since even folk like myself still like to talk/interact, it's a nice way to get a bit more of that on a daily basis w/out it equaling a need for extra mental recuperation.

Sounds just like me, I don't understand it very well, but it has something to do with different cortisol levels, I think. Introverts have naturally high levels and extroverts need to socialise to become more cortically aroused. We're all social animals by nature (allegedly). It is arguable that we're social by sociocultural context, by nurture, that empathy is a learned behaviour, not an intrinsic behaviour. Regardless, you've got your introverts, extroverts, ambiverts, selective mutes. An ambivert is not much different from an introvert in that they enjoy spending time alone, but I think they're more outgoing in social events than introverts are. Introverts like me and you feel drained after talking to people for a while, whether as extroverts get energised by it, but if you consider yourself pretty outgoing in social events, you're probably more an ambivert than introvert.

That one weekend a few years ago when the hidden forum showed up was awesome.

And long live Tads!

I think you, me, calax and pidesco are the only TADS members left here :shifty:

Me and Stale joined, but we hardly contributed anything to the forum. We were latecomers.
