Well, another completely missed point... The people are not infringing on the copyright, they are buying the content... The thing is, they are buying it from black market for fraction of the price, most of the time they do not even know, they are infringing... There is ****loads of money to be made, but some asshat just need to change the way the stuff is handled in poorer countries

a low end dvd player in southeast asia can be purchased for 10-20 USD... you know Made in China stuff which are sold in China do not need to have added all the taxes and **** demanded from NA and EU to raise their prices, so that our local manufacturers do not suffer from competition...

It's theft. plain, and simple. No matter hwo you slice it. they buy it on the black market knowing that owners of said product don't want it there and do so willingly. That's theft.

 

the fact they are poor is no excuse for stealing video games. if they are as poor as they claim to be they should be concentrating on other things. I can't afford the msot expensive computers but you don't see me going out to steal them?

I'm guessing this is places where you can go and find the pirated goods in a store, in which case does make sense why people would pay for the cracked DVDs rather than forking out a bunch for the legit one. Shocking, really.

what it looked like to me was that consumer media (like movies and games) has high markups, while other products are sold at rates appropriate for the local economy.

I've been to places like that. It makes the entire "PC piracy" argument rather moot, as I don't think I've really seen that many PC games there...EVER...even before DRM.

 

I do see tons of the latest Console releases, Movie releases (as in MOVIE releases...they are released to the theaters and are on sale on DVD at these places) on DVD and other items. Not so much music anymore...still tons of Console games and movies though.

I can explain how it was in my country 15-17 years ago.

 

Normal salary was 100EUR

Normal 386DX was 1500EUR

Normal game was 80-100EUR but only OCEAN games were available for sale here legally, there was no chance for example to buy a Lucasfilm or Sierra-On-Line games here legaly.

Normal DOS was not for sale here legally

 

Family with 1 child were saving for a PC up to 2 years, all PCs were with pirated DOS preinstalled and the child was buying the pirated PC games with his pocket money for 5EUR and then traded/copied between each other, nobody had a clue here, that something like copyright even existed.

 

Black market just offered what everybody wanted to buy, but no one offered it by legal means... Same is happening now in China, India, Brasil and similar countries around the world. Big publishers are crying and black market is laughing.

While semantically correct, it is just that, semantics. In the end you are depriving somebody somewhere of their return for time and labour invested in their work.

It is indeed a similar situation in many places in current day developing countries. Way too expensive products for the local pay check available for a fraction from local crime gang store fronts that make a fortune from duplicating the products, having only the blank media and a printer as their expenses.

 

Heck, I make a decent living and I still find that the current garbage to come out of the movie industry is way overpriced. Probably why I mostly buy 3 for $15 or similar bargain bin deals
