WorstUsernameEver
OK.. time to list my favorite characters of the game. I must admit, MCA and co did a very good job with archetypes here : they're not Obsidian's best character, but they have layers, depth, they may not be what they seem at first, they have an interesting past, they react at almost everything you do (and that's what made them live and breath for me)...... and awesome voice acting to boot. Characters that were simply... AWESOME Steven Heck - .... I'm not sure if he's the most intelligent and unpredictable agent ever, always covering his moves under absurd conspiracy theories, or he really believes all that stuff. Either way, he's really incredibly talented, and I wouldn't want to EVER meet him in combat.. I'm pretty sure he would rape all the other bosses without problems. Marburg - He's the type of villain we all like to hate. Calculating, professional, almost respectful and admiring (at least when it came to my professional, duty-driven, pragmatic Thorton) in some instances, I feel I'll need another couple of playthroughs before really seeing the totality of his character. His backstory makes him a sort of anti-Thorton, giving your fights against him a dramatic edge other bosses lack.... super chain shot Mike Thorton always wins though. Leland - His character concept is simple, but the dialogue and voice acting are so well executed that he comes alive and becomes believable. The 'flashback conversation' with him was definitely one of the best moments in the game, and paradoxically I gained his respect by being his opposite. Kicking the crap out of him was OH SO SATISFYING. Omen Deng - He deserved more screen time. Professional, good background, awesome boss fight, incredibly cool character design and great voice acting. The cutscene when he lets his cape fall is pretty much the definition of awesome. Characters that grew on me Mina Tang - She initially seemed vanilla.. a decent character, but nothing special. But somehow, her interactions with Mike, her dossier, everything well... they made her better. By the end of the game I had the feeling she was a pretty good character.. not one of my favorites though. Scarlet Lake - I liked her since the beginning.... well, I have a thing for redheads. But the reveal towards the end casted the character in a totally different light and made some events make much more sense. Darcy - I expected more from him as a character, a sort of rival relationship throughout the whole game... still, his boss fight redeemed him and the last interactions you have with him sort of redeemed him. Untapped potential as a villain, but still a fun character. .. and the only meh character of the game, according to WorstUsernameEver is..... THE PORNSTAR! MADISON ST. JAMES! - Really... she sort of didn't fit the game. Not so interesting dialogues, so and so voice acting, and you can understand me if I let her die without thinking about it much. EDIT : Of course, a lot of the characters deserve mention, even some minor ones (like Hong Shi and Championchik) but I felt these, for a reason, were the one who caught my attention. 2nd EDIT : Favorite convo? Leland flashback convo and Marburg caf Edited June 14, 2010 by WorstUsernameEver
WILL THE ALMIGHTY
Marburg scared the **** out of me when I first met him. That conversation at the caf "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Nikolai
In defense of Madison: Did you guys even try to piss her off? Did you ever read "Tess of the D'Ubervilles?" My position has always been that it's four hundred pages of horrible, spineless whining and two pages of awesome at the end. Similarly, no matter how insipid Madison seems, it's all worth it when she beats the ever living crap out of Mike. I like a woman who snaps and tries to kill me, unsuspecting. Don't you? Enoch
I love the news summary you get when you let Brayko live but don't bring him to help with Surkov. The news quotes his description of the perpetrator of the assault on his mansion as "an [expletive] American commando cowboy, like the [expletive] offspring of [expletive] Ronald Reagan and an [expletive] American ninja." Tigranes
Madison is a lot better if you piss her off than if you are nice to her. She acts quite realistically in both cases - but as the scared little girl out of her depth she is pretty annoying. When she's certain that Mike is an arsehole it works quite well. naarkh
All characters are well designed and have different personalities. But i guess my favourites are Sie(Ride of valkyries, big machine gun, loves to kick arse and a female... What else?), Sis(Mute character who follows orders and has nasty pistols with different looking... She's both attractive and seems tough but melancholic. I think she's interesting), Scarlett (Seems like typical bond girl at first but assassination of Sung O.o) , Steven Heck (Reminds me of Atton from KOTOR 2 for some reason, but now on drugs which is even better) , Marburg(Smart, calm, professional, cold blooded villian that we all love. Reminds me of Agent 47 from Hitman because of looks and stance), Leland(The big brother eh? With really good voice acting and his charisma he felt like he's alive), Omen Deng(Really good voice and charismatic looking plus i think his story is well written.), Albatross(So many details are still hidden but he's helping Mike not because that he likes Mike but his intentions make him to act in that way. Meaning of professional alongside Marburg) Neutral/Can't decide : Mina (Reminds me of Kreia. Supervisor/leader but doesn't feel like a mentor because she uses Mike. Interesting character of course but it felt like watching exactly same movie second time. Also typical looks and professional stance are boring, not as interesting as the characters above) , other Alpha Protocol guys(Well they just followed orders for their country's sake no matter what. But again they didn't care about Micheal. So it's a stalemate i think) Don't like : Madison(Typical girl next door cliche which is not so interesting.), Darcy (I thought him as a rival in same organisation but... Events haven't allowed it so he lost his role i think. Just a boss that dies after some shooting) , Mike(His voice acting was sometimes bad but nothing much to worry about. Seriously only needed character creation and gender selection instead of pre-designed. It's third quarter of 2010 not 1990's)
gruesomeb13
But when I think about it seriously, my favorite was Albatross. He is the definition of professionalism. Whenever I saw a spy/agent movie, I always looked out for professionals. Well, Albatross is that person. This + SisAnd Albatross is paired up with Sis. Two people of awesome for the price of one. The scarf got me on board. And Sis was a great character, just wish there could have been some communication mute yes, not knowing how to email??? Estelindis
My favourites in terms of characterisation were Mina, Albatross, and Sis. In the case of the first two, I adore non-villainous professional types; keeping one's cool under pressure shouldn't be something only the "cold" bad guys can do. In the case of Sis, the scene with the locket was just perfect. The most hilarious was Heck. Loved the conspiracy emails and the possible replies! The character I most wish had been given more writing and screentime was Darcy. I actually really felt sorry for him - I felt his abrasiveness was armour just barely covering a severe sense of insecurity (due to his not being able to work in the field even after joining AP, since his senator daddy had to be placated). The character with the best crowning moment of awesome was Brayko with his musical boss fight! I thought the only boring character was Madison. I didn't mind that she was a sweet damsel in distress... She just seemed a little bit thick. Edited July 15, 2010 by Estelindis
TheChris92
Steven Heck, Marburg (An intriguing villain), SIS, SIE and even Mike Thorton simply for his hilarious taunts he delivers to Marburg, among them being insulting his employer too. "Look, old man; you can talk big all you want, but at the end of the day? You're just a corporate drone collecting a paycheck. You answer to a cardboard cutout half your age with a fashion sense of a screaming child. He spends thousands on his ****ing hair. I may be on the run, but I'm a lot better off than some monkey in a suit who can't even talk and put his pants on at the same time.
