Slowtrain Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 In other news, EA is planning to sell you demos of their games for 10-15USD http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27759/A...me_Launches.php It's.. it's.. it's like EA and Activision are in a battle for who takes the stupidest decision. Really. I'd like a demo of the demo. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
mkreku Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Unlimited Detail That was brilliant. But I wonder, how will it be possible to apply effects to the graphics using this system? I mean, using a search function to weed out only the pixels you see on your screen is beyond clever, but doesn't that also mean that all you have to work with after the fact is the frame buffer? Mamoulian War Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Unlimited Detail This looks amazing, but with the time how long detailed games like FF XIII have been in development with current technology, i am realy wondering how long would the graphical designers take, to create a single model out of millions of points... not to mention the whole game, whe you would need billions^billions of points to create whole scenery without copy/paste... Creating 1 model and Copy/Paste would look pretty awful imo... Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. When you have to work for a month to create realistic looking model with tens of thousands of polygons how long they would need to create model from millions of points??? It wouldn't have to take long at all. In fact, you could actually hire sculptors to make your models for you! A 'common' 3D scanner produces results that should be very similar to the point clouds he was talking about. It should theoretically be possible to just let a sculptor sculpt something in clay, scan it in and incorporate it into your game. Although this would probably only work for static objects since animations would be a bit tricky done this way.. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Unlimited detail sounds very interesting. Problem is there's a good chance you'll need another sort of Graphics Card, so a lot of hardware would be dated. Still, holy crap! "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
LostStraw Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Unlimited detail sounds very interesting. Problem is there's a good chance you'll need another sort of Graphics Card, so a lot of hardware would be dated. Still, holy crap! Yes, that's the biggest catch. It's the same problem with sparse voxel octrees which is a similar technology that ID Software was pushing for not too long ago. Without the hardware to support it there's no chance of it being used in AAA games. There are also steady advances happening on the polygon side as well where limited geometry is becoming less and less of an issue especially with DX11 and tessellation. Something that's already available on today's hardware: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gdc-10-u.../63145?type=flv

Vilhelm Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 According to Kotaku, Nintendo just announced the successor to the Nintendo DS series of handheld consoles... the Nintendo 3DS (tenative name). Here's the official announcement in Japanese. According to it they will reveal more details on E3 this year. So it's been pretty much confirmed that it will have good processing power (probably close to what the Gamecube had), a motion sensor (given), and technology capable of showing 3D graphics without the use of special glasses.

WorstUsernameEver Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Oh look, 'tis that Witcher again. Wow. 'Magic sex scene' with Triss... MATURE! Honestly, they should scrap that 'mature' nonsense.. it's even campier than ME's sex scene. Also, me doesn't like new Geralt's face.
HoonDing Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 (edited) At least that disrobing spell beats DA's sex in underwear. Also, Geralt now looks more like in the comic. Edited March 23, 2010 by virumor The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.
