Hurlshort Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Steam is offering all the Xcom games for $2 this weekend, so I figured I'd give y'all a heads up. It has the original and Terror from the Deep, which are classics, and Apocalypse, which is a very solid game as well. There is an action one and a flight sim one that I never played (Enforcer and Interceptor, I think) but for two bucks, I'm willing to ignore the lemons. I think Tropico is for cheap too.
Purkake Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 And it all comes in a convenient DOSBox wrapper!
Gorgon Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) The problem there is that the good versions are the playstation ports + the Amiga releases. Terror from the deep and UFO defense, which you can stand looking at. The PC versions are nothing short of the ugliest dates at the DOS graphics party. Slowtrain Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 The PC versions are nothing short of the ugliest dates at the DOS graphics party. If someone can't play the first 2 XCOm games because they are ugly that's your loss. They are still 2 of the best video games ever made, which when you think about it, given almost 20 years of technological and gameplay advancement since XCOM was released, is pretty ****ing sad. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Leferd Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Picked this up along with the Freedom Force pack. Also $2. "Things are funny...are comedic, because they mix the real with the absurd." - Buzz Aldrin."P-O-T-A-T-O-E" - Dan Quayle
Pop Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 (edited) I'm wondering if this isn't the harbinger of a new game announcement. It wouldn't be the only hint, Irrational apparently had job listings that mentioned Xcom. Steam did the same thing with Dead Space right around the time the sequel was formally announced. Pop Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Far from it for me to suggest that a new game announcement would lack a healthy show of bellyachin'. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!

Well the Amiga and Playstation ports are the same game, only with tolerable graphics. Come to think of it you could probably play the Amiga versions with an emulator. If anything like that still exists. Na na na na na na ... greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER. That is all.

RPGmasterBoo Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 I was thinking of picking this up but i decided against it. I've never played XCOM before, but looking at the graphics its just too much to swallow. I won't have the will to go through with it. So I just picked Freedom Force up instead. *puts dunce cap on* Imperium Thought for the Day: Even a man who has nothing can still offer his life

Purkake Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Freedom force is great, but X-COM is pretty much THE tactical strategy game(along with Jagged Alliance 2).
Hurlshort Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 I'm wondering if this isn't the harbinger of a new game announcement. It wouldn't be the only hint, Irrational apparently had job listings that mentioned Xcom. Steam did the same thing with Dead Space right around the time the sequel was formally announced. Meh. Does the world need a streamlined realtime XCOM remake? Well, Sid Meier's name was bandied about with the possible re-make of Xcom. If he really had any say in its creation (heck, even a 2 minute conference call) then I think it might stand a chance at capturing some of the original magic. Just look at how Civilization IV and the remake of Pirates turned out, they modernized a classic without losing the soul of the originals. http://www.gamerzines.com/pc/news/sid-meier-xcom.html Here is an interesting and possibly baseless rumor that says there is an Xcom shooter and a strategy game in the works. Huh.
Purkake Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I think I posted this somewhere already: Irrational on Rumored X-COM Revival: 'Don't Believe Everything You Read'
Hurlshort Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 I think I posted this somewhere already: Irrational on Rumored X-COM Revival: 'Don't Believe Everything You Read' Yeah, that is still pretty vague. Plus that just means that Irrational might not be behind a new Xcom, 2k is the one who owns the IP I believe, so it might just mean another developer is on it. It seems like there are rumors of a shooter, which was tied to Irrational but sounds unlikely, and a strategy game which is tied to Sid Meier. I only care about the strategy game.
Gorgon Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 XCOM with bullet time and romances. Win!Don't forget random explosions! actually when you think about it XCOM already has bullet time. Na na na na na na ... greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER. That is all.
Masterfade Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 (edited) I was thinking of picking this up but i decided against it. I've never played XCOM before, but looking at the graphics its just too much to swallow. True for the original XCOM but Apocalypse is rather serviceable graphics-wise. Edited January 31, 2010 by Masterfade
Gorth Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 X-Com Apocalypse is a must for tactical combat game fans. Only real competitor is Jagged Alliance 2. Gorgon Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 It is a bit disapointing that they couldn't manage to integrate the Amiga/Playstation textures though. Na na na na na na ... greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER. That is all.

Hurlshort Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 Without any combat screens from the Amiga, I can't really see a difference. I still think the Dos version looks ok.
