HoonDing Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I guess that one should NOT guard the backdoor into Mordor. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.
LadyCrimson Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I saw an article about that little guy a few days ago....I love jumping spiders....soooo cute! ...plus the fact they developed to eat mostly plant matter is extremely interesting. I guess that one should NOT guard the backdoor into Mordor. "Frodo, the pipeweed fields are in danger!!" “Things are as they are. Looking out into the universe at night, we make no comparisons between right and wrong stars, nor between well and badly arranged constellations.” – Alan Watts
Purkake Posted October 16, 2009 Author Posted October 16, 2009 I guess in that case Galadriel would have given Frodo the Sacred Broccoli, the tastiest of vegetables.
Humodour Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id...getarian_spider The little spider spends its life dodging patrols of ants and stealing their (vegetarian) lunches. Um, science didn't create that? It evolved naturally.
Deadly_Nightshade Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Scientists create the cutest little vegeterian spider It is cute, and it is a vegetarian, but I am not sure why you said that scientists created it. "Geez. It's like we lost some sort of bet and ended up saddled with a bunch of terrible new posters on this forum." -Hurlshot

Theseus Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Bubbles that momentarily get as hot as the sun? I wish they would explain how! Thats awesome!
Purkake Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Wikipedia to the rescue! The snapping shrimp competes with much larger animals, like the Sperm Whale and Beluga Whale, for the title of 'loudest animal in the sea'. The shrimp snaps a specialized claw shut to create a cavitation bubble that generates acoustic pressures of up to 80 kPa at a distance of 4 cm from the claw. The pressure is strong enough to kill small fish and shatter glass. It corresponds to a zero to peak pressure level of 218 decibels relative to one micropascal (dB re 1 μPa), equivalent to a zero to peak source level of 190 dB re 1 μPa at the standard reference distance of 1 m. Au and Banks measured peak to peak source levels between 185 and 190 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m, depending on the size of the claw. Similar values are reported by Ferguson and Cleary. The duration of the click is less than 1 millisecond. The snap can also produce sonoluminescence from the collapsing cavitation bubble. As it collapses, the cavitation bubble reaches temperatures of over 5,000 K (4,726.85 degrees Celsius). In comparison, the surface temperature of the sun is estimated to be around 5,778 K. The light is of lower intensity than the light produced by typical sonoluminescence and is not visible to the naked eye. It is most likely a by-product of the shock wave with no biological significance. However, it was the first known instance of an animal producing light by this effect. It has subsequently been discovered that another group of crustaceans, the mantis shrimp, contains species whose club-like forelimbs can strike so quickly and with such force as to induce sonoluminescent cavitation bubbles upon impact.

GreasyDogMeat Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 (edited) How could anyone not love these cute little things? That HAS to be some sort of photoshopped image. It looks like one of those cute creatures you see in any sort of anime that makes stupid baby noises. Edited October 19, 2009 by GreasyDogMeat
