June 28, 200916 yr We don't know why the game was canceled and no one involved with the project can talk about it. Trying to place blame on either Obsidian or Aliens because they're the only visible entities in an information vacuum is insane. There were obvious parallels between this project and BioWare on Star Wars/KOTOR. I thought it had similar potential for success. I'm sorry we won't see it.
June 29, 200916 yr I've got to agree with jjc. People are making mountains out of molehills: if the game was being marketed and developed like AP at the moment, I doubt anybody would be talking about how 'you can never make a good RPG out of the franchise' or 'Obsidian can't do anything different'. The jury's out on both, really. Obsidian hasn't done anything different yet, or something that's truly their own brainchild. At the very least, it recognises that this not where they ultimately want to be (i.e. a factory line of Slam Dunks) and are trying to change. To me it just looks like Feargus doesn't want Obsidian haemorrhaging money and rolling on the stage floor like BIS/Interplay did in its slow, dying years: he purposefully set up the "we'll take your bastard children" arrangement with Bioware to make sure the company was on sound footing, and with an unexpected recession and the (probably related) cancellation of Aliens threatening to buck the plan, signed up New Vegas as a counterbalance. I'm not a big fan of the franchise and was never excited about this project (Aliens) in the absence of specific info, but I'd much rather have seen this come to life than another get-this-out-the-door-in-a-year sequel. Nevertheless, I can see why things have happened that way... if I'm fishing things right. Hopefully Obsid hadn't invested so much into Aliens that it becomes another Torn; and hopefully Josh won't give up his job to go on a wild crusade against the unjust gods of this planet yet. Let's Play: Icewind Dale Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Icewind Dale II Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Divinity II (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG1 (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG2 (In Progress)
June 29, 200916 yr Sega's reasoning: "The Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release." What a horrible publisher. At least Obsidian got a game engine and lots of art/story assets out of it, but either way it's ****ed up. Arrrg! You can NEVER have enough Alien games coming out! Of the three projects they should have cancelled the flipping Aliens Colonial Marines game, looks the most dull. I don't suppose one of those internet petition thingamabobs would do any good would it?
June 29, 200916 yr I just don't get the reasoning. I can understand spacing them out, which is what I assumed they were doing when cancellation talks started. Maybe release one of the games in 2010, next in 2011 etc so you don't have three out at once. To just outright cancel it though?
June 29, 200916 yr I don't think SEGA is the big evil responsible for AliensCRPG death. I mean they cancelled it, but I believe they did it because RPGs, especially those made from scratch, cost about 30million $$$, not including the promotional campaign. I guess Colonial Marines is a bit cheaper to make as it is an FPS. Not to mention OBSIDIAN had about 20 months left to work on the project, SEGA could either put ALIENSRPG in a cryostasis and keep on losing money on that title, or cancel it and loose only what they invested in it so far. Sucks big time anyway, hope they will make Torn now, I think it had kinda alien setting(no pun intended). Edited June 29, 200916 yr by PoziomyPion
June 29, 200916 yr Sad! So its time to look forward to the new super secret project and hope it will finaly deliver.

I guess Colonial Marines is a bit cheaper to make as it is an FPS.And it's probably guaranteed to outsell an RPG, no matter how good. What I don't understand is the rationale behind simultaneously (or with very little delay inbetween) commissioning three games in one franchise, two of which are going to directly compete with one another. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
June 29, 200916 yr So.... can Obsidian devs start leaking in-game screenshots, renders, arts, sounds or anything in particular that's related to the project?
June 29, 200916 yr The biggest loss for me, despite Alien being my favorite movie, is that the goal of a good horror RPG has been punted farther afield. One can hope for a Lovecraft RPG now, I guess. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!

A most sound strategy, by all accounts! - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
July 1, 200916 yr Man, after hearing about the Aliens RPG not being a grindfest, and seeing the concept art, it's a real shame that it got canceled. I've been looking forward to the Aliens RPGs since it was announced, and it's a shame that it never got to make the journey from development to completion. Of course, I'm still going to support Obsidian and get Alpha Protocol, and Fallout: Vegas, because I've been with these guys since my teenage years with Fallout 2 and Icewind Dale. Hopefully, Aliens RPG will be brought back to life one day, but for now, let's just look forward to some hot spy action. May you rest in peace Aliens RPG, we all miss you. PS, am I the only one here looking forward to the other Aliens games? I mean I miss the RPG, but it being canceled isn't a good reason to point fingers.
July 1, 200916 yr This sucks. My Will To Live has dropped by -100 points. I don't have much more remaining. *cry* Some of my Youtube Classic Roland MT-32 Video Game Music videos | My Music | My Photography

July 1, 200916 yr This one works better, just close your eyes and start remembering Aliens CRPG. Bad thoughts will quickly go away.
July 2, 200916 yr Sad news indeed. Can anything be salvaged from this game? 2 years in development to be sent down the drain is a little harsh. Maybe Obs can take it to Activision-Blizzard and sub the Aliens for Zergs I'm just kidding xD I still had hopes for this, sucks to have them crushed like this.
July 3, 200916 yr Obs should recycle the game code/game mechanics for a new game. A game about a bug hunt or something. I'm serious. But how well would an Incubation/Infestation like game sell these days? The kidz only want Star Wars and Elder Scrolls these days, which is a shame. July 4, 200916 yr Yeah and Ken Levine is working on an X-Com game...allegedly at least. Rain makes everything better.
July 5, 200916 yr Yeah and Ken Levine is working on an X-Com game...allegedly at least. So it's going to be a severely dumbed down X-COM clone in the steampunk era?
July 5, 200916 yr Isn't it about time to close down this forum already? I finally want to forget. Rain makes everything better.
July 5, 200916 yr Never forget, never. Man, I's starting to think the world has grudge against Sawyer, it's about time he'd get a pet project out ffs. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears.
