Purkake
Since it has Steamworks, you can get the cheap retail version and still enjoy all the benefits of Steam anyway

Hurlshort
I'm still a bit worried there will be no preload option from Steam, and I'm thinking I might try and cancel my pre-purchase if that is the case. I wish they would be more clear about that stuff. My connection is way too slow to try and download it on the day of release, I'm better off swinging over to Best Buy and purchasing a store copy. Blodhemn
I love the gangster genre and the 50s but I'm pretty tired of the GTA type games. I'm assuming that's all this is, but with a tighter narrative? Basically, I think the world looks nice, but the gameplay just bores me by looking at it. Hurlshort
Yeah, freedom and open-ended game play is soooo last year.
Blodhemn
Well it's boring to me. Open endedness is overrated as hell. I didn't come close to finishing GTA IV. I just played the Mafia 2 demo and the controls are definetly better than GTA IV on PC but there just wasn't much else to it other than the 50's skin and possibly a better story. GreasyDogMeat
I can see where you are coming from with a lot of the open world games, but GTA IV & Red Dead Redemption are some of the best games I've ever played. I'm planning on playing Red Dead a third time as a bad guy and I'm addicted to the multiplayer. I just love how these sandbox games can take you back to a different time or place. After trying the Mafia 2 demo I don't think it is nearly as tight as Rockstar's open world games, but it just blows me away driving down the road looking at the old cars listening to 'Why do fools fall in love?' on the radio. Hurlshort
I didn't come close to finishing GTA IV either, and I still got quite a few hours of fun out of it.
GreasyDogMeat
Bah, you guys missed out on a great story. Me, I couldn't put it down until the end. I did have that burn out problem with San Andreas (eventually finished it though). GTA IV has those wonderful taxi cabs that teleport you to missions. Hell Kitty
I've played the demo on both PC and 360 and didn't find it terribly riveting. The 360 version isn't as bad as some people seem to be saying, though I guess it depends on how demanding you are concerning resolution and framerate. Are you personally offended by jaggies like purkake or do you play all your game at low res without aa like slowtrain? The home you start out in and the surrounding neighbourhood and parkland is very pretty but after roaming around the city there doesn't really seem to be much going on (and someone on the Qt3 forum claims that side missions have been cut), and the one mission included was short and not terribly interesting. I did like that I could plug in the 360 controller and the on screen prompts changed accordingly, and I do love it when I can interact with object in the game world even if that interaction doesn't actually amount to anything. It doesn't help that I don't particularly care for the gangster setting. I've been spoiled by having just recently played through Red Dead Redemption, which is a fantastic game in the same style and easily my favorite of the year. I've never been terribly fussed over the wild west but I ended up really enjoying the setting and it made me dig up Desperado and Call of Juarez for some more. And I'm totally in love with Bonnie McFarlane. Any open world game was going to be disappointing after playing RDR.
Slowtrain
low res without aa like slowtrain? My eyes are old. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that. Hurlshort
I've played through the demo a few times and there are a few things that bother me. First off, what is the actual point of causing mayhem? It just feels rewarding in games like Saints Row 2 and GTA, they keep track of all the crazy stats, and SR2 even flashes points up. Just Cause 2 also did that and it was satisfying. I went off a nice jump in the demo and over the freeway, but nothing really happened. Also, I'm not finding a lot of stuff while I explore. I know there are a few dirty mags around, but I've yet to find any other than the one in my house, and when I climb to the top of buildings there is never any reward. Are there going to be other collection stuff? Crackdown had me totally hooked on just collecting orbs for hours. Maybe this stuff is in the full game, but it is a bit concerning. Guest Slinky
Maybe this stuff is in the full game, but it is a bit concerning. Can't say have they changed things in Mafia 2, but the first Mafia wasn't about freeroaming and finding new places/stuff, it was about a tight gangster story. The open world city was just a set for it. And if Mafia 2 delivers more of the same, it just might be the game of the year for me. Unless Obsidian hits the jackpot with New Vegas. Kaftan Barlast
I paid through paypal and it went very smoothly, but a friend of mine chose on of the other alternatives and got hijacked to some extremely dodgy russian scammy pay thing so he had to cancel his VISA card.
