Mamoulian War Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 (edited) So... anyone know why God of War has received so many high scores/critical acclaim while Dante's Inferno has average reviews? Is it a case of more of the same or does God of War have better gameplay? I watched videos of the two games and they look identical as far as gameplay goes. did not play Dante, nor i am planing to play it, but watching the videos with similar gameplay, does not automaticaly garant that the gameplay is similar for real... I've seen lot of awesome trailers to games, where gameplay looked godly, but when i touched the gamepad/mouse/keyboard i started to cry... WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I'm guessing God of War had more interesting scenarios and set pieces. Maybe more variety in the combat. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Hurlshort Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Also, Mr Global Moderator, since when does me criticising a thread in general warrant you criticising me in particular? Sure, I'm up for that, it swings both ways, right? How about this: I think you're an awful moderator who lets your personal issues stain whatever it is you're doing for Obsidian. Your personal views reflects badly on this company, especially when you post irrelevant trolling like this above quoted post. Keep it to PM or restrain yourself in the future, you're only making yourself look unprofessional. Haven't we already gone over this before mkreku? Mods are not paid employees. As an aside, that's why it's a really good idea to have an external team of moderators. I've been moderating the official forum of a band for years with the understanding that it's my "job" to be the prick so they don't have to be. You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that? Purkake Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 Yay, another mkreku power trip, it's becoming a monthly event. As for why God of War gets all the love and not Dante, I'd say Dante just doesn't do the combat as well, at least going by what I've read.
Pidesco Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 While I've never played God of War, my understanding is that GoW is Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden for the gaming-impaired. Is that correct? Gorth Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 ...and I think that is about enough of that. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Screw Dante's Inferno - I want to see a video game adaptation of Mein Kampf. "Alright, I've been thinking. Purkake Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 (edited) Well the villain in Bioshock 2 will apparently want to make Rapture communist, maybe Bioshock 3/4/5/6 will focus on fascism? Here's a hilariously awesome(and official) for Dante. Edited February 5, 2010 by Purkake
Purkake Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 Wow, when Gametrailers gives a AAA game a 6.8 you know it's bad. Same for most of the other gaming websites. I feel vindicated now, yay!
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 So basically: -Levels are really well designed and look fantastic. -Everything else sucks. "Alright, I've been thinking. Calax Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 the review I read said that the first two levels of hell were good, but the later ones lacked, but that it was effectively a reskinned god of war. As to what god of war is, it's basically Devil may cry except with TNA, and the violence is off the wall. It's probably the best platformer I've played other than the Sands of Time. And even then it's a REALLY close race between those. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
Slowtrain Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 I saw an ad for it on TV last night. On the Discovery Channel, I think, which seems an odd place to be pushing a game like this. How come Alpha Protocol doesn't have TV ads? Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Purkake Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Speaking of turning literary classics into video games, this is pretty funny, with classics such as "EA Presents: WAR AND PIECES", "EA Presents: THE BODY COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO" and "EA Presents: MACDEATH". Majek Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) It's funny how everyone has a problem with it butchering the book but every reviewer loves GoW's destruction and warping of Greek mythology Edited February 12, 2010 by Majek 1.13 killed off Ja2.
Purkake Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Having a hero beat up gods is slightly more in line with Greek mythology than turning Dante the poet into a 6-foot tall muscular scythe-wielding action hero with a cross stitched to his chest. Also, I don't think GoW was claiming to "bring the literary masterpiece to the new generation". Edited February 12, 2010 by Purkake

Now that you mention it. Though the story of GoW is crap anyway. Imperium Thought for the Day: Even a man who has nothing can still offer his life
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 Because ripping of a god's head off and then using it as a lantern while climbing a mountain-sized mythological deity to go punch Zeus in the face to death is badass. Dante just steals a big scythe. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! Purkake Posted February 13, 2010 Author Posted February 13, 2010 (edited) ...from Death! While both games are ridiculous, I think the main difference is presentation. God of War is a fictional story set in the Greek mythology setting, while Dante's Inferno is actually advertised as the game version of the book and is grossly misrepresenting the source material. Plenty of things have actually used Dante's 9 Circles of Hell setting, starting with everyone's favorite Planescape. Edited February 13, 2010 by Purkake

Do you know that something similar to this was already present in "Clash of the Titans" (1981) movie and many people say it's an example of classic?... so no, you have to give better example of how GoW fails with not going with the myths... If you read at least few ancinet greek myths, you find how many of them have similar stories to tell... Especialy about era of Greek Primordial Gods... I am not saying that GoW story is "OMG teh bestest", but at least, it tells story similar to many of the original ancient myths... Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC.
