Working on the assumption it is on "hold", maybe they just don't have the cash for short term sustaining of a large number of products. Maybe when Alpha Protocol comes out and if it sells well they'll put the profits into active development of the Alien RPG.

It could be that they had to shore up the short term in the hopes that this will lead to the moving forward with titles more distant in planning.

Or I could be wrong.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

I don't understand. If they love AP so much, why are they screwing OBsidian up and not giving them the benefit of doubt for Aliens?

... urh, shame I cannot say anything.

Wait and see... it isnt all as bad as you think.

As far as the Alien RPG switching hands, I'm guessing that would be a rather problematic move seeing as how the game is developed on an Obsidian developed engine. I'm not entirerely sure how this works, but I assume Obsidian are owners of the Onyx engine?

EDIT: However, there are still the problem of the lay-offs...

Anyway, thanks to ryan for keeping us just a bit updated.

Depends on who is picking up the pieces.

Yes, that would make sense. But if its on hold and the development transferred to another developer instead, that doesn't make sense and pretty much, makes it very difficult to make the game design work. Remember the production of Alien 3 where it involved changing of directors? The result is pretty much underwhelming.

Both Alien games were originally projected to come out in 2009.

Were both right and wrong.

Sega wanted Colonial Marines out for 2008 originally but the RPG for 2009...

Sorry to nitpick, but here's the press release.

They may have moved the schedule forward later on.

If switching hands happens, maybe the Alien RPG wouldn't switch hands, maybe the Aliens LICENSE would switch hands, with the new licensee holder then contracting the developers to continue developing games or scrapping them.

I doubt the RPG will be moved to another dev team.

CM on the other hand uses a middleware engine (Unreal), and FPS games are usually easier to get picked up by new teams, so perhaps CM will get moved to another team. (Rebellion?)

But for friggin's sake, don't anyone dare to touch the RPG!!!

Obsidian + Aliens RPG from what I have heard is SAFE I think it may have been delayed but this is due to the team focusing on Alpha Protocol, not a problem Aliens RPG.

So I was cry whole day for nothing?

Ok guys, Actually I cannot say much but I have info....

Ryan, how reliable is your info source?

This seems to conflict with what you posted a few posts up regarding the Variety article (game changing studios).

No, it was Sega freezing the project alright. They want to make one product for franchise at a time. And people lost jobs too, that is the worse part.

That Infinity Ward SciFi shooter I heard is Stracraft Ghost. A wild rumour, but still...

Ryan, you'd better be right about it not being cancelled, because if you're wrong, and I'm disappointed again, I'm gonna have to bust some heads.

Hey now, my mother is huge and don't you forget it. The drunk can't even get off the couch to make herself a vodka drenched sandwich. Octopus suck.

And make Sega do a hummer on J.E's nutz

No, if everyone followed my example Sega would go out of business, the availability of computer games would shrink, and new developers and publishers would get a chance to get into the business. That is to say, we do not yet know what has happened to the Alien RPG and I don't think I'll really make that kind of impact, even counting in that I influence others.

Even if they did, and they wont (because its silly), SEGA would sell their sonic games to the sonic slash fanclubs and probably survive on that.

Don't know about you guys, but I don't want just an Aliens RPG, I want an Aliens RPG by Obsidian. This idea of changing developers is pretty inane. It's just as bad as it being canceled imho. Hope it's not true.

Infinity Ward is owned by Activision Blizzard, I doubt their corporate overlords would let them work on games for Sega, in-house IP like Starcraft on the other hand...

My thoughts exactly. I can't see any good coming out of this if it isn't being developed by Obsidian.

Here comes the part where my post will probably get deleted.

I think that the worst thing that could happen to the Aliens RPG is if it's being developed in house by Sega. Especially the ones who develop all the recent sonic games.

. . . This sounds bad, I was really hoping Obsidian would be able to ride the recession. So many people have been "let go" from places recently I thank my lucky stars I still have a Job in games, and managed to get in just before things started to get really bad.

I came up with Crate 3.0 technology.

Crate 4.0 - we shall just have to wait and see.

Down and out on the Solomani Rim
Now the Spinward Marches don't look so GRIM!

It just sounds like Sega wants Obsidian to finish AP before continuing work on Aliens? The teams and resources are getting consolidated to concentrate on one product at a time?

SO, if that is in fact the case, if you want to assure yourself of Aliens, buy AP. I know I will. Its going to be awesome anyway.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

But, to answer your question, very reliable. That said, things change all the time, nothing is set in stone but I wouldn't panic about the RPG, or Alpha Protocol for that matter.
