Guys, I respect the fact that you want to talk, but please keep the speculation on internal Obsidian matters to a minimum. This isn't really the place for it.

We know you can't confirm anything, but we all know it's pretty much true. **** Sega let the recession help get rid of them, they're long past the dreamcast days. Bunch of talentless hacks.

I wonder what were the problems involved in the project though.

Lacking of focus by simply putting too many eggs in one basket similar to NWN2? Unfamiliarity with the creation of new engine? Mistakes in design goals that in theory seems fun by technically it turns out to be flawed which results in needing to revamp the entire games like some of Nintendo's games (Twilight Princess comes to mind)?

Whichever it is. Obsidian now has no choice but to play it safe in their decisions and tighten their belts. This happends at the worst timing which is during the middle of the economic recession and living cost in the California state where the company is residing in isn't cheap as well.

Actually it's still crap. A strong franchise could be revived with two games released with a few months timegap, and instead we get an AvP game, made with low resources and not enough time. Blah.

Yeah, the AvP game looks bad considering matters in general. But it wouldn't be the first time we've seen a publisher slash into external projects to focus on something they consider more of a slam dunk. Probably rushed, probably a bad idea, but it's post Holmes-TD, Kurt Warner-scrambling, desperation time...

And for the record I didn't heard nothing about problems in the last year, I actually heard that it was coming together very well in the last year, after a bumpy start. I don't know...

It is what it is.

This thread has grown a lot, since I last posted - which was earlier today. I have faith in Obsidian, and I am pretty sure the publishers are to blame (even if they have nothing to do with it) :)

TSLRCM, the mod that Wookieepedia doesn't want you to know about:

I'll await official confirmation on all this, but it's definitely sad to see another unique RPG go bye-bye if it's true.

i think its safe to say the Alien games are cursed. this isnt fair.

I only hope that Sega makes a huge explanation for the fans. Sega must understand if they wanna deal with a lot of angry alien fans (which ones are not tennagers mostly and have an average economy) They must leave things cool before AVP3.

So when the announcement is done, can we at least know the name?

Just spread the word on the blogs Joe.

And Matthew as a marketing producer will be you allowed to talk about the "never happend" cancelation sometime? Also Devs should post with fakes nicknames

I'm quite disappointed, from what we've seen and heard so far it looked like it was coming together very well. I was really, really looking forward to this game.

My biggest fear is that this will throw a wrench in the AP works and eventually sink Obsidz. I am really hoping that does not happen. Hopefully Sega still has the resources to see that Obsidz doesn't get screwed.

Guess one lesson learnt is that: you should never accept 2 projects from the same publisher at the same time. If publisher happends to be in a knee deep recession, company that is hired will be utterly screwed.

A most disappointing development... and the fact that Sega will not comment is most definitely a bad sign. I hope this will not have severe repercussions for the future of the company.

This sucks!

I really think we should start writting an open letter to Sega , spread it over the net and email them massively. At least we should make some noise.

From the sound of it this doesn't have anything to do with the quality of Aliens RPG (from the sound of it everybody liked it) and everything to do with the economy. Sega probably can't get the sort of credit it needs to nurse the number of projects it had.

May be they can re-brand it as something else and find another publisher. I'm not surprised, RPG's don't sell that well, too complicated, everyone wants action titles now...

Lolz... What?

Wouldn't putting the game on hold make more sense than just outright cancelling? Though of course I'm not sure how the publishing game industry works and if such plans are even possible.

Finding another publisher for the game could be an alternative. Activision dropped Ghostbusters and Atari picked up where it left off. Of course that would mean the new publisher is able to afford buying Aliens license from Fox and funding Obsidian at the same time.

Exactly. Like the link placed earlier in this thread said, Sega had to axe 20% of its R&D. The axe has to drop somewhere. It really sucks for us that it fell on Aliens RPG, but the axe dropping somewhere is just inevitable.

Only almost every publisher is being hit by the recession and cutting jobs and projects, if not whole studios.

...unfortunately that comment is "no comment."

They have enough money. What they don't have is a solid not risky public to release an Alien RPG game.

They trust sonic&mario and most of that crap cause they know there will be thousand of people buying it. They aren't smart enough to sold themselves to public. They are stuck on fast selling games and that will ruin their company. In recession almost every company prefer to sell more and worst instead to sell less tittles and high quality ones. They are stuck in earning the same amount of money they was earning before the recession which is IMPOSSIBLE and They come with this kind of "solutions".

They should had made a huge hype with Aliens Rpg and every one will be jizzing their pants now. But with another upcoming Fps they will be so f**d because market will be really saturated of crap fast games.

I feel really sorry for the devs. Not Obsidian ones only, every team that involves with those horrible publishers ruining the game industry.

Two industries held back by publishers: Gaming and Music.

In both cases the executives that are making the big decisions are massively disconnected from their consumer.

It's funny that both are still huge money makers, but could be even more popular if not for outright stupidity by the suits.

Bleah.

I feel like I did when Looking Glass and Sirtech died. I had forgotten what a crappy feeling it is.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

This my freinds is EXACTLY why hiding your game away is a huge ****ing mistake , all respect to obsidian and the amazing hard work they put into this title , but this **** has gone on long enough

If they would have been given permission to show this title and put interest into the gaming community ( not just the 20 or so people who know this game exists outside of the dev house)

this game would not be canned right now , as there would be general interest in it.

Developers need to actively seek out ways to get game info to the public , if you hide your game away and there is no interest in the game , dont be suprised if you get the plug pulled out from your behind.

Sega is ****ing tired and lame , and its disgusting that they would give up these two original titles for some preteen retard shooter based on a comic book

All i can say right now is that i wish obsidian and their families the best right now , its hard times indeed.

as for gearbox , those idiots have had multiple chances to turn **** around and they ignored the fans.

they ran themselves into the ground.

good luck obsidian

I don't know about that.

Gearbox showed their game to the public, released some of their design intention and info. to the public. Yet they are in no different position than Obsidian's, unfortunately.

Its the recession man. Its just sucky that there seems to be no way to save the Alien RPG from the oblivion of cancellation.

Let's all keep something between our ears and a little perspective as well. This applies to those who've just come over and heard the news, as well as those who've been around for a while:

1) There is no official confirmation of any action by Sega on any Aliens title, or Obsidian doing anything internally. Therefore, at the present time, nothing has happened. If anybody has more information or sources of rumours feel free to discuss them. But there's no reason to jump up and down going OH MY GOD at the moment.

2) Seeing as how we have no idea how much, if any, of this true, it is even sillier to go around recriminating Sega, Obsidian, God, Sarah Palin, your neighbour or any anthromorphic deity you may worship. Let's stick to some discussion and conversation rather than angry mobbing.

3) This is, furthermore, not the time to air the illogical and unfounded accusation that Obsidian was refusing to release information "on purpose". Please be advised that it is standard industry practice for the publisher to regulate all such things, not Obsidian.

4) Even further, this is not the time to start slapping your fellow forumites with yellow, soggy gloves and calling them names. Let's all hug and be friends, and make special signs to each other, and give chocolate.

Woopie.

Dammit. No! I did not expect this. Leave the internet for an hour and the whole world collapses. Damn.

This was supposed to prove Obsidian's worth to the world. So there no more would be nasty comments like "Obsidian? Who's that? Second-rate Bioware?" on the internet. And the whole world would join us to sing praises to the genius and talent that is Obsidian. "Obsidian has redefined the redefining of rpg's" - I so would have liked to see that in the news.

Why does this always happen to companies I like?

I am very... sigh.

At least we will always have MotB.

I hope Alpha Protocol won't suffer and I hope that it kills everyone with it's awesomeness.

EDIT: This OMG! post may seem very awkward after Tigranes's warning, but for my defence I'll say that I was writing mine when he posted his, so I couldn't read it before.
