But they are nippless boob, does that still count?

I'm not surprised, RPG's don't sell that well, too complicated, everyone wants action titles now

I'm surprised Dragon Age hasn't gotten canceled, I'm sure it would be too slow for the Oblivion fans. Hope DA: O or AP don't get canceled, only two games I'm looking forward to this year.

EA is a much stronger publisher than Sega, and Riccitiello has close ties to Bioware. Those are probably the only things that spared DAO so far, plus it got boobs.

Boobs plus a clear direction that made the game finished on time. :)

This really sucks. Sega didn't hesitate to release sucky Sonic games, and even that horrible Space Siege, but gets all "Eeeeeeehhh too risky" all of a sudden if a truly shining example of video game art emerges. I now hate Sega officially.

Btw Obsidian should really pair up with EA in future. I think Johnny isn't so not cool as those guys at Sega.

:)

J.E. is here! Please give us some tyte news

Josh is too shocked and depressed now to write. He just stares at the screen. And stares. And stares... :)

I bet he's writing a looong post

Ok he's not

If its canceled its sad because I wanted to see the game and I'd hate to see the work spent not go anywhere immediately.

If its not canceled then I look forward to seeing the game when it eventually shows up.

Either way its out of my hands as a consumer so I see no real reason to fret over it. What will be will be (and what is done is done).

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

On the good side, a lot has been learned during the course of making the game. Perhaps Obsidian could launch it's own SciFi IP and sort of wrap the concept of Aliens around it. And get EA signed as a publisher so that we actually get the game.

This is one of the few games I was actually looking forward to.

I'd be really interested in hearing what Josh has to say. Of course, there is nothing he can say at the moment.

I am disappointed if this is true. But as tep says, what can you do?

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

But how long will it take? Another 2-3 years? They don

But... but... INTERNET DRAMA NEVAR SURRENDERS!!!

This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.

Or would the publisher still retain ownership of the game assets? I guess it depends on their contract.

Oh Jimmy, you were so funny.

Don't let me down.

Nothing other than await for official news. SEGA will announce something, the Obsidian will announce something one way or the other.

It also never ends. If not this than some other thing would come up to cause people to gnash their teeth.

But at the end of the day all you got is gnashed teeth.

Hmm. Obsidian could recycle characters and story-elements, just barely altered lest coming into ownership trouble. Most of the game content (art assets) would be useless anyway as with a new IP they'd have to create new stuff anyway. But it would be quicker as to start with everything from scratch.

They might be able to incorporate the gameplay elements that they've developed like the fear points, whatever that is/was. I was worried that the 'game assets the publisher wants to keep' might include the engine itself, though I guess that's unlikely.

Regardless, depressing. If this is true, I feel for JE. That's 3 big projects canned with significant work put into them: Baldur's Gate 3, Fallout 3, and now this. I can't imagine putting that much creative effort, years and years, into these projects and have them all canceled.

Great...iam a Alien fan since 20 years. I was very interested to see finally a Alien game not set purley on action. Besides Troika and Bioware, Obsidian was one of my favorite company to make such a game. Instead of one action and one Alien RPG, we now get two action titles. How original Sega.

I feel for Josh, how depressing. I remember the sad day in November 2003 when i was reading that he stepped back from Van Buren. I would have loved to see his finished Fallout 3, and I would have loved to see his ideas for an Alien RPG.

Was also looking forward to this game.

Time to boycott SEGA methinks.

Also, I'm new, and angry. Hey.

As to why Sega decided to cancel the project rather than the others, I can only speculate on, but it wasn't much of a surprise with understanding how the game has been handled over the past year, as well as understanding how Alpha Protocol has been handled over the past 3 years plays a part in the cancellation of Aliens.

Thanks for the note, Joe, though usual "who is that?" scepticism applies. What you're saying makes sense, tho', and fairly matches what one could conclude looking in from the outside. It's not so much a new perspective as in confirming what kind of makes sense, even if it is a bit surprising to hear (I've always had great respect for the business acumen of Obsidian's top, this "return to publisher for more money/time" thing reminds me of Troika in a very negative way).

As for the why, and how angry we should be with Sega: recall that they are in real trouble. It's a recession, and no publishers (except Nintendo, Activision-Blizzard and maybe EA) have a lot of elbow room left. Sega needed to seriously slash R&D and if they had any existing doubts about Aliens RPG, which sounds likely if it was a project that wasn't going too hot anyway, then it's a painful but natural slice.

It makes me sad, but I can't see why it's so.

Actually it's still crap. A strong franchise could be revived with two games released with a few months timegap, and instead we get an AvP game, made with low resources and not enough time. Blah.

And for the record I didn't heard nothing about problems in the last year, I actually heard that it was coming together very well in the last year, after a bumpy start. I don't know...

Edited by Briosafreak

Whatever it is now, AP MUST be successful. If AP is proven to be a success, who knows mabe Sega would give a benefit of doubt and revive the Aliens RPG.

From Joystiq

"Sega has allegedly pulled funding from both Obsidian's Aliens RPG and Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines, sources have revealed to Joystiq. Supposedly 20 people were laid off from Obsidian yesterday and more could soon lose their jobs. The layoffs also affected the team working on Alpha Protocol, another Obsidian-developed, Sega-published title. Without the Aliens RPG, Obsidian is apparently on the ropes our sources say."

Some loose lips at OE, I'd say.

Guys, I respect the fact that you want to talk, but please keep the speculation on internal Obsidian matters to a minimum. This isn't really the place for it.
