Tell me, is this also striking you with something familiar? Or am I mistaken that this game engine mught be a copy of an other game?

I play the demo and the character animation is also resembling that other non-named game, but I can also be wrong, so I ask the community about their opinion.

The animation can't be as bad as Oblivion. Or are we speaking of another game.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

People tend to compare it with NWN2, but the Drakensang engine is less clunky...

Well, NWN2 comes with editing and modding options, this one not, plus character creation isn't as detailed as far i know, atleast in the demo you can't change appearance more than just genre

Mod tools are not really a selling reason for someone who just wants to enjoy a great singleplayer RPG, and changing appearances isn't really a game breaker for me either. After all, I want a good story, not a silly barbie doll dress kit.

I don't see it as a barbie doll dress kit to add in character customization. When I play a CRPG I like to play my character. I want to feel like I have ownership of my character. I want not only determine the character's skills and abilities, but also look and style. I want to play my character, not some pre-gen material spoon fed to me from the designers. The story is important, but without me feeling like I own my character I feel more like a spectator than actually playing the role.

The problems is that, especially, in tabletop to PC rpg conversions, some of us expect to be able to outfit and design our avatar just like we would in an actual rpg campaign or scenario.

Naturally, whatever tools they provide will always pale in comparison to imagination and some penwork, but some effort would be appreciated.

Yeah again, that argument Killian stated just doesn't affect me at all. Heck, I even decided to play with the original Sheppard in Mass Effect, because my own made were too ugly anyway. Did that bother me? Not at all. Playing premade characters is fine in my book, what I want is diversity and innovation in gameplay and a great story with likeable characters.

Yeah, I don't mind either if there's all that in an rpg.

I can't tell if that hair looks like its made from plastic or melted wax. Either way its hot.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Most of us don't have the time to do this.

Could you please just tell us your impressions? It's a simple thing to do, really...

Prequel announced

Drakensang: The River Of Time: Prequel to award-winning RPG highlight in production

Hamburg/Germany, February 17th, 2009 - Hamburg/Germany based publisher dtp entertainment has today confirmed that developer Radon Labs is working on a prequel to the award winning title: The Dark Eye: Drakensang, which has won the "best German RPG 2008" award at the German Developer Awards. Drakensang: The River Of Time is going to tell a new story within the Drakensang universe. The prequel is scheduled to be released on the PC early 2010.

"Fans of Drakensang and RPGs get exactly what they want: A new story in the embosomed Drakensang universe, bringing as much innovations as tried and true game elements", describes Bernd Beyreuther, Creative Director at Radon Labs, Drakensang: The River Of Time.

"We continue the success story of Drakensang. The Dark Eye players can look forward to another precise realization of their favorite RPG system. Those players who will experience The Dark Eye for the first time won't miss a thing and can just start right into the fascinating medieval RPG fantasy scenario of Drakensang: The River Of Time", Markus Windelen, COO of publisher dtp entertainment, adds.

So, is the demo good or interesting? Is it worth buying the game? Is there a BG/NWN feel to it?

I've played it, but I'm not sure what to make of it. The character development seemed really complex, but I didn't have time to "unlock" enough spells and skills before the demo ended to really get a feel for just how tactical the combat can be. As it was now, I only had one skill and used it excessively in every battle.

It might also just be the demo area, but there seemed to be a lot of quests everywhere. Some easy, some even easier. "Collect three wolf pelts" kind of quests mixed in with "Open the locked chest" kind of stuff. The dialogues were tree based but I never got to use any of my skills in any of them (even though I put a few points in conversational skills).

At least the graphics were nice and the game ran very nicely on my mid-range rig. I'll give it a try whenever it is released over here, but that's mostly because I am starved (again) and not because the demo lured me in.
