Tale Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Leaners are almost as bad as people who invert their Y-axis. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Calax Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 :remembers people running while leaned: Sigh, I hated those people. What do you get from leaning while zipping across the map? Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.

Tale Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 They caught me by surprise a couple times. One time in the demo, walking down a short hallway, being careful of ambushes and scary stuff and the scary music starts up. I think "oh, Alma's going to pop out from the area on the right behind that thing!" I turn on the flashlight, look and she's not there. Scary music still going on. I look to the left. Not there. "Maybe she's up ahead? Or did I miss her?" I turn around and hit every single button that's assigned an attack. I melee, grenade, fire. Almost all at once. Because there's Alma, right behind me, the entire time. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Slowtrain Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Really? No leaning? bleah. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Bokishi Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 yeah no leaning, which is ultra lame. It's runs really fast though. Rename exe to fear2 for SLI boost Current 3DMark
Purkake Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) I just want leaning back, that's what made FEAR 1 tactical IMO It's pretty sad when the only tactical aspect of a game is leaning around corners. I would think that it was the smart AI that would flank you and take cover instead of just charging you Doom style. Some kind of cover mechanic would be nice, though. Too bad the best they have come up with is the whack-a-mole game of "hit them in the face when they peek out" Edited January 23, 2009 by Purkake
mkreku Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Hmm. I was getting great graphics and great framerates, but every once in a while the game would freeze up for like half a second. It was disturbing, to say the least. Also, the weapon sounds are underwhelming. I don't like the black borders at the top and bottom. The colour scheme is admittedly less gray than the first game but it's still not good.I feel they actually applied too many post effect filters too. And I don't know if I fired upon the wrong items, but I didn't get that 'massive destruction' feeling like I used to in the original FEAR. I was walking around in the robot trying to demolish things but I barely left a scratch on anything. No crumbling pillars, no exploding cars, only a tiny shatter of glass whenever I found a window. Odd. Not impressed, I guess you can sum it up as. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!

Slowtrain Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 I can't really remember Fear. Except for office buildings. ANd I had feet. I know I had feet. Morgoth Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) Here are my official complaints about the demo: -Glowing enemies in SloMo mode. I mean WTF? First, it looks worse than in FEAR, second why do they glow yellow? They better provide a patch where I can turn that off. -Grain filter. It's one of the betters (It's really only very fine), but still I miss an option where I can turn it off completely. -Don't like the zoom. I want that from FEAR back(where it doesn't always look through the scope). Crawling slowly through the levels in the old mode is more fun than running straight through. -Too easy. Waaaaaay to easy. I "tested" the AI, and it's actually really good, even more sophisticated than in FEAR, but man, they shoot like crap. They never hit me, that's why the battles are so easy and quickly over. I hope this was only a demo thing, and I get some real fights in the full version. Combat, after all, is the pudding that makes FEAR. -slim letter boxes despite using a WS. Nothing that really bothers me, it's just unusual that they don't support real 16:10. -No Quicksaving. Bleh. Again, this is a console thing. But even console versions of Orange Box and Bioshock support quicksaving. -Strange hitch-ups. Is this performance related, or are these just savepoints? Anyway, it's annoying. Performance otherwise is great. -Did I meantion the fights are too easy? Otherwise, it's really great. Don't miss the leaning. Never used that in FEAR either. Leaning is gay. So, I think it's still a blast to play. Who else is picking it up at day one? Edited January 23, 2009 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better.
Slowtrain Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) Leaning is gay. No, running is gay. Why put it in a game at all? -No Quicksaving. Bleh. Again, this is a console thing. But even console versions of Orange Box and Bioshock support quicksaving. Quicksave? Why do you care? You just said it was too easy? Actually you said it was "waaaaaay to easy" to be precise. ALso, out of curiosity, why did you quicksave in Bioshock? You couldn't die. Edited January 23, 2009 by CrashGirl Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. Niten_Ryu Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 This has to be easiest FPS I've ever played. I selected hard (as it's highest difficulty available) and enemies barely got dent to my armor, let alone health. Only time my armor went to zero is when I met that laser mob. I didn't really get "scary" parts of the game where ghost appeared in front of me. If it was way to waste short burst of shotgun slug, job well done. If it meant to scare me... I'm not sure how that could even work in FPS where your main job is to eliminate just about everything that moves - or doesn't move but look like it could be destroyed Maybe in few years I could buy this from discount bin or Steam Let's play Alpha Protocol My misadventures on youtube.
Morgoth Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) "No, running is gay. Why put it in a game at all?" Uh, because I'd get a bit inpatient if I had to crawl the whole time through the levels? "Quicksave? Why do you care? You just said it was too easy? Actually you said it was "waaaaaay to easy" to be precise." I don't like auto savepoints, because saving is a freedom I should have. "ALso, out of curiosity, why did you quicksave in Bioshock? Slowtrain Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 "No, running is gay. Why put it in a game at all?" Uh, because I'd get a bit inpatient if I had to crawl the whole time through the levels? Why move at all? ALl a shooter really needs is a gameplay mechanic for firing a weapon and some sort of object to fire at. Why not just have an FPS where obects move by you and you try to shoot them when they pass a designated point? If you reduce a shooter to all you NEED, then that is all you have to have. But really of course, the MORE OPTIONS one has in a FPS, the more fun the gameplay is, heh? Lean, jump, crawl, prone, swim; they all add to the experience and make it better. You may not make use of lean, but that hardly means it should simply be removed. "Quicksave? Why do you care? You just said it was too easy? Actually you said it was "waaaaaay to easy" to be precise." I don't like auto savepoints, because that's a freedom I should have. Or the developers should have. SInce it is their game. Again though, if a game is so easy, I don't see the complaint. Unless you are afraid of crashes. "ALso, out of curiosity, why did you quicksave in Bioshock? You couldn't die." No, but it's fast way to save you game that you later want to continue, stupid. How did Bioshock do that? Just retart the game at your last autosave o something? I can't remember? And yes, personal attacks make me blush. But that's about it. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. Slowtrain Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Wow, do you have your period again or what? Mostly I'm just reacting to your assertion that removing options from a game makes it better in some way. You may not like leaning, but other people might? No? You think? Maybe? FEAR 2 has been developed for consoles from ground up. Usually, you don't have leaning for console games mostly because of the lack of buttons. So why do you think they should bother building leaning in extra for the PC? Development doesn't work that way. Rain makes everything better.
Tale Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) I thought console FPS games invented leaning. To make up for precise look controls when turning corners. And by "I thought" I mean I made that up on the spot. Edited January 23, 2009 by Tale "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Calax Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 Who knows, maybe they threw out an old build for the demo. Or a bad level. As to the difficulty, maybe they dumbed it down for the demo (doubtful), or they made it so that console players wouldn't have to watch their e-peen wilt as they get destroyed again and again by the brutal AI because their control scheme isn't as precise as the mouse. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
Morgoth Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) Two reasons I observed why the demo was so easy is 1) the bad guys seem to be half-blind. When I crawl up and out of that bus, the bad guys don't seem to see me, until I approach nearer. In Fear1, they immediately started shooting, even from very far away. 2) They can't aim. They shoot, but not very fiercely, and they don't seem to hit you very often. I presume it's the result of focus testing, when they just observed Johnny Miller how he got always pwnd, hence they adjusted the AI. Edited January 23, 2009 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better.

Well having played Far Cry 2 and seen how easy that was, you're probably right. STALKER: Clear Sky is somewhat more difficult, although the AI is still iffy in places.
