WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 So what actually held your interest in 2008? Was this year as good as 2007? What are you looking forward o in 2009? Personally, I only had vague interest in Bad Company and Prince of Persia. This being a year filled with sequels to games I never played (Resistance, Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, etc...), I didn't really get that many games. For some reason, I just caught up with all the stuff I missed in 2007 or 2006 like Bioshock and FEAR. I wouldn't say 2008 was as good as 2007. But October and November were simply ridiculous in terms of how many games were released at the same time. And I'm pretty much only looking forward to Project Origin and Halo 3: ODST for 2009, sadly. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Deadly_Nightshade Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Let me see, off the top of my head here are some games from 2008 that were worth the money I paid for them... Fallout 3 Left 4 Dead Assassin's Creed de Blob S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky Super Smash Brothers Brawl The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Tomb Raider: Underworld "Geez. It's like we lost some sort of bet and ended up saddled with a bunch of terrible new posters on this forum." -Hurlshot
Tigranes Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 It was a pretty good year in terms of how much ambition there was and how many games were released... at least, good, if you are realistic. I'm just happy that we got an Obsidian release (SOZ); we also got a lot of info on Diablo III, Dragon Age and the like. Just got to say, the amount of slobbering World of Goo is getting from RPS and the like is ridiculous, it was a delightful game and a wonderful achievement for an indie game, but it's nothing you can go back to and I think they've just got carried away. Full credit to the creators though, for a great game nonetheless. And I'm curious as to why LittleBigPlanet got so little praise, not having tried it myself. Was it mediocre? Let's Play: Icewind Dale Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Icewind Dale II Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Divinity II (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG1 (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG2 (In Progress)
H Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Games I liked, in no particular order: Devil May Cry 4 - Not as good as 3, but what is? World of Goo - Although I think it's a little overrated. A spectacular achievement for a 2 men dev team, no doubt, but Lemmings are just better. Prince of Persia - While the game is too easy and shallow, the world is genuinely fun to explore. Morrowind of platformers. Storm of Zehir - Storm of Win. King's Bounty: The Legend - Made me proud to have a Russian passport. Rise of the Argonauts - Yeah, not a lot of people liked it, but that's because they totally ignored the undocumented mini-game. 'What mini-game?', you may ask. Put a couple of bottles of wine somewhere within your hands' reach before launching RotA. Take a gulp each time you notice writers taking liberties with Greek mythology. Take five gulps whenever Achilles opens his goddamn mouth. Drink an entire bottle on your first encounter with Medusa. There you have it, 15 to 20 hours of pure bliss. Bully - Miles ahead of Grand Theft Boredom IV. Achievement Unlocked - Game of the year.

Morgoth Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Saint's Row 2 looks stupid. Why playing that when GTA4 is so much better? Rain makes everything better.
Starwars Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 STALKER Clear Sky: Didn't quite live up to the original for me but was nevertheless a really cool and unique (if somewhat flawed) game. The Witcher Enhanced Edition: Won't be on any top RPG list of mine but it was good for a playthrough. Most enhancements smoothed out the bumps the game had a bit but smoothing out can only go so far. Storm of Zehir: Fun and different direction for Obsidian. Fun to replay. Probably my favourite release of 2008. Hinterland: Good to kill a few hours. There's not a single game I'm really looking forward to in 2009. If Age of Decadence gets released, then that'd be it. I'm interested in Alpha Protocol but not sure if I'll enjoy the gameplay much. Nothing revealed about Alien so far. Dragon Age sounded great to me when they just talked about the project, once we started seeing trailers and gameplay footage my interest for the game dropped like a stone. Morgoth Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 GTA4, MGS4, Fallout3 and ME (PC) where my favorites of 2008. Still have to wait for my Gears of War 2 copy to arrive.. At least I expect it to be manly. Rain makes everything better.
Gorth Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I consider myself lucky, no failed investments in 2008. The Witcher EE, Stalker Clear Sky, Tombraider Underworld, X3, Painkiller Overdose and Trackmania were all fun. Even Warhammer Online was moderately fun the two months I played it. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Pidesco Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Devil May Cry 4 was an absolutely awesome PC game. World of Goo was also brilliant, and Audiosurf provided a lot of fun while also being the greatest timesink of the year. Meshugger Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Hmm, i can't recall playing any really good games in 2008. None of the regular Fallout3/Left4Dead/Gears2/Fable2 weren't even interesting enough to warrant a purchase. Stalker/Bioshock/TheWitcher/MotB came out in 2007, so...i guess that my choice would be World of Goo. Musopticon? Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 (edited) Ninja Gaiden 2, Sins of a Solar Empire, CoD 4, Clear Sky and Gears of War 2 were awesome at least. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted December 27, 2008 Author Posted December 27, 2008 Better in every way. More color, better looking, more varied single-player which was also generally better, more multiplayer modes, co-op Horde mode, etc. "Alright, I've been thinking. I want teh kotor 3 Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 SMASH BROTHERS,, FO3, de Blob, Gears 2, PoP (why so serious? easy?), Resistance 2, Sins (if it came out in '08, not sure), the new GalCiv II expansion, DMC 4. mkreku Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I'm not at home right now so I can't check what's lying around, but Fallout 3 was easily my most memorable gaming moment of 2008. I've also grown fond of GTA4 after a pretty rough start, but I haven't had time to play that as much as I've wanted yet. World of Goo was an excellent game, but I lost interest in the more frantic parts of it, mainly because the controls are less than perfect. What else did I buy? Far Cry 2 was an absolute blast the first ten hours. After that the respawning and repetition killed it for me. I haven't even finished it yet. The Witcher lost me somewhere in the first city with the autopsy and crap. I'm going to try Mercenaries 2 co-op soon (xmas present) so I'll hold off on that one yet. I can't remember any more games from the top of my head. But I think my next purchase will be King's Bounty.. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
