Soundtrack

Featured Replies

Is there any word on whether the game will feature an original soundtrack. These things really help set the mood, see PST.

James Horner's is by far my favorite so far.

I'm of mixed feelings on a soundtrack.

On the one hand, a good soundtrack can really help the adrenaline pump during action sequences.

But no music and ambient sound only can really amp up the scare factor.

So...um...that said, I'll be honest - I don't terribly remember much of the music soundtrack to Alien (Goldsmith), Aliens (Horner), Alien

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Hans Zimmer is the best film composer, period. Although I doubt Obsidian would use Film composers, as these are more expensive. Besides, hasn't Jason Graves already been appointed to do the soundtrack for both Aliens and AP?

I think a minimalist action soundtrack approach would be best, with strong elements of ambiance.

Fallout and Torment had excellent ambient soundtracks, but they were 'slow' 2D isometric games. Half-Life and Deus Ex had excellent action soundtracks, but they were 1st person shooters. Aliens is something in between, being 3rd person 3D squad based.

In fact, Deus Ex had an excellent system of switching between a sort of ambient version of the current track and an action version, depending on the presence of enemies. Aliens could use this to effectively to build up tension when not in combat, whilst also keep a rhythm going during actual fighting.

But I'm a huge fan of Deus Ex's soundtrack. Especially the Paris Cathedral track. <3 organ.

Dead Space actually has a well-integrated action/horror soundtrack that changes to and fro dynamically according to the situation. Noting that Aliens RPG is an RPG game, I still think that Obsidian could take some pointers for its dynamic music direction.

Yeah it sounds like you are right. alexander brandon (i assume anyway) will be leading the music for it. i think it could be interesting if mark morgan does some things maybe. title music/movies if nothing else. thoughts?

i wonder if that is possible (and if anybody is listening) and how that might develop if it were to be attempted.

I want techno.

Shut up.

Get off of the internet.

But doesnt that formula also "give away" the presence of enemies? You know they are near because the sound track changes. That would ruin the "fear factor" for me as its hard to be surprised by an Alien when you know its coming.

Agreed.

I suggest Samba.

I suggest afro-semitic jazz.

The answer to that would be that they'd change music only when you get attacked, an alien leaps at you for instance.

Or everything would go dead silent...

With the motion sensor's cold beeps as the only sound....

Then the aliens would start a pantomine routine.

You seem to have missed the entire point of the motion detector in AvP2, then...

You can have the sound build, and then when it's nothing do the 'Wa wa waaaaaa...' noise. And then your face gets eaten.

Well, for "Story mode" (i.e. cutscenes, dialogs, scripted events) they certainly should use music-snippets. For exploration mode, a very elegant, reserved and supportive atmospheric track. For something more anticipating, no music at all. Just the groaning of steel, the harsh wind, the beeping of the motion tracker, the dribbing of water. For shock effects, the typical "WRAHZAH DAMMMDMAMDMADMD BOOOM". And for the credits video, a boogiewoogie please!

Yes, our game will have original music. Alex and I are in agreement that the core themes of the Alien and Aliens soundtracks are sparse, unnerving, ambient pieces and not heavy, bombastic epics. As someone mentioned, stingers and prolonged combat pieces are different.

This makes me very happy.

Same here. VERY happy.

The music really pulled off that sense of the eery hostile stillness of space. Of course when you are fighting alien encounter #12314 the thrill of anticipation has worn off long ago. Computer games can't build tension like the movies.
