Enoch Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 I'm certainly fed up with the constant political advertisements. I watched a few NFL games this weekend, and it was wall-to-wall mudslinging in the ad breaks.
Guard Dog Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Ditto to what Enoch said. Well, at least it will all be over tomorrow. We have discussed at great length who is voting for who (or supporting for all non-US types). Tomorrow I'll cast my vote for McCain and once again I'm voting for the lesser of two terrible choices. No matter who wins tomorrow I have only one hope: that the election outcome is not close. I do not mean a land slide. I believe the EC vote will be close. I just want the victory of whoever wins to be unassailable in every state they actually did win. If we had a repeat of 2000 in this political and cultural climate it can only end badly. All I'm hoping for is that it is decisive one way or another. "While it is true you learn with age, the down side is what you often learn is what a damn fool you were before" Thomas Sowell
Hurlshort Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 All I'm interested in is the Prop 8 in California vote. It will be interesting to see if the discrimination and fear mongering wins out among the voters. I think anyone who votes yes on illegalizing gay marriage should be forced to explain to a currently married couple why they don't deserve the same rights as themselves.

I think anyone who votes yes on illegalizing gay marriage should be forced to explain to a currently married couple why they don't deserve the same rights as themselves. How is it polling? I've heard it was dead meat politically. I've never understood why this is a big deal. If a gay couple want to get married why should any one else care? That whole "Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" thing has to apply to everyone or it applies to no one. Aristes Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 I will refer you to my previous statements concerning Prop 8. I voted against... what was it? Prop 10 earlier? I tell you what, if Prop 8 fails, explain to a polygamist why the law doesn't permit marriages between more than two people. I know the counter argument, but I'm curious to hear what you folks say about it. Frankly, I don't think this rises to the level of denying essential civil rights to people of color, although I voted against the earlier measure based on the fact that it does deny civil rights to a section of our citizenry. The fact is, however, that the people spoke and the Supreme Court decided that its place was to legislate rather than decide law. I don't want to restate the same arguments, though. My biggest beef with every election is that folks act like the world is coming to an end if their side loses. If Bush is elected, then we'll end up in World War 3! The FIRST time! I guess he just jump started in the first election, but he has another few months to make good for his second term. Bill Clinton is going to take us down the dusty road to Socialism! Really! That's where we are now, a Socialist State! What do you mean, you can't tell? Seriously, get a grip, people. We live in a democracy. Even if you think voting for one or the other is a mistake, the Republic will endure. If we have some misteps in one administration, then we can vote for better in the next. People act like the election is a football game. One of my friends said that he hopes things go bad while Obama is in office to prove that he's a bad choice for president. Think about that. He's wishing for the United States to do poorly so that he can prove that Obama was a bad choice. What the hell is that? We should vote our conscience but support the winner. In that regard, I'm completely with Guard Dog.

Hurlshort Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Polygamy is marrying more than one person. I really have no clue how that can be compared to gay marriage. It's just avoiding the issue by introducing a completely different issue that really isn't related.
Trenitay Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Can someone please explain to me why gays shouldnt get married? Hey now, my mother is huge and don't you forget it. The drunk can't even get off the couch to make herself a vodka drenched sandwich. Octopus suck.
J.E. Sawyer Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Can someone please explain to me why gays shouldnt get married? If gay people can get married, it's an inevitable descent to 10 year-olds being forced to engage in mass pedo-necro-bestiality with their dead underage family dogs. twitter tyme
Trenitay Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 I wasn't aware that you could see the future. And if thats what you see in the future then we need a new psychic. I'm exaggerating, but this is often an argument used against gay marriage. It's the "slippery slope" -- the same idea applies to the decriminalization of marijuana. I have very strong opinions on Prop 8, but I try to keep most of my political posting on these boards pretty minimal. twitter tyme
Trenitay Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 I love it people that make excuses like that. I always get a nice laugh. but seriously, i dont understand people like that. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 (edited) French-Canadian Radio DJs fool Palin by pretending to be the French President. Palin just shot her career in the foot. I listen to these radio DJs every morning (It's a Quebec radio station), and they're never funny... but this... this is GOLD. A must-watch. Edited November 4, 2008 by WILL THE ALMIGHTY "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Calax Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 I love it people that make excuses like that. I always get a nice laugh. but seriously, i dont understand people like that. supposedly the guy who wrote the legislature is using the answer of what people fear about gays and marrige to make his ads. I unfortunatly live in an EXTREMELY conservative area and prop 8 signs are everywhere. most recently the prop eight signs have "Prop8= less government" which seems kinda... wrong and blatant lying. I also can't drive through the center of Sac (Greenback + Sunrise) without having to pass through two rallies one on each side of the street... one is no on prop 8 the other is yes on prop 8. There have been arrests EVERY night since that started. Prop 8 supporters are also sayin that Gay marriage will be taught in schools, which CA superintendant of schools says isn't true. As to the presidential campaign, I sincerely doubt that McCain will win. According to what Little I saw off CNN he has to win ALL the battleground states and take Colorado and Nevada. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
julianw Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 (edited) On a sad note, Obama's grandma who went through the Great Depression and WWII wasn't fortunate enough to see the first Black candidate winning the US presidential election. J.E. Sawyer Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Personally, I think the entire ballot initiative system is terrible. The U.S. is a representative republic instead of a direct democracy for a reason. The amount of money (money California DOESN'T HAVE) spent on ballot initiatives in California is unbelievable. At its worst, democracy truly is the equivalent of two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. Let's try to evolve beyond that. If you want to pass legislation, pass it through the legislature. The fact that we're throwing ballot initiatives to the voters when our budget is still in such a terrible state is... man, it's outright embarrassing. If California voters had their way, no one would pay any taxes and anything viewed as a non-majority interest would never get any money. Great! Anyway, there has to be a final arbiter of the constitutionality of any legislation we pass. That's why the supreme court of California/federal supreme court reviews these things. It becomes "judicial activism" only when they rule against what someone likes. twitter tyme
Aristes Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 We have the ballot initiative. It's the law of the land introduced by progressives, no less. I agree, however. The state constitution and the initiative/referendum system sucks. It's a complete mess. The things we're forced to consider every cycle are just nuts.
Humodour Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Goodbye, Mr. Bush. Can't say it's been fun. In recent days, a poll or two has asked me to rank your presidency. I'm a reasonable man, and I am not inclined to say "dreadful" just because I don't like you. But all things considered, well, it was. Ciao Bush, and ciao Reagan! Hello President Obama, and hello once-in-a-blue-moon political realignment of the electorate. I wasn't aware that you could see the future. And if thats what you see in the future then we need a new psychic. I'm exaggerating, but this is often an argument used against gay marriage. I have very strong opinions on Prop 8, but I try to keep most of my political posting on these boards pretty minimal. You know, for some reason I thought you were a religious conservative. I guess you could be a Libertarian or something, but either way, it's heartening to see you hold socially liberal views.
Humodour Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 (edited) If I could name one thing about this election campaign that I'd say sums up for me why I like Obama so much, it'd be this (even if you ignore the issue in question - it's just the way he approaches it): http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=cpBzQI_7ez8 Edit: Oh, and I realise how "partisan" or "idealistic" or "naive" the post above this may sound but, frankly, I don't give a damn. By tonight you'll know I was right, or I'll eat my... I'll be extremely drunk. Actually, either way, I'll be extremely drunk. I'm hedging on 59/60 in the Senate, 270 in the House, 370 in the electoral college, and 54% of the pop vote. Edited November 4, 2008 by Krezack
Morgoth Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Does it really matter who's gonna be president? I doubt there will be any significant change, as the real power is spread around other peoples anyway. People that don't make asses out of themselves in front of TV, for example. Rain makes everything better.
Rosbjerg Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Yeah it's gonna matter, on foreign opinion. Since according to a BBC poll, a majority of foreigners (people outside the US) prefers Obama as President. USA bashing has never been more popular than under George Bush's presidency, maybe Obama can help you guys gain some good will, even if the difference between him and McCain is minimal. Fortune favors the bald.
Morgoth Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Why should America care about "foreign opinion" at all? Rain makes everything better.
Enoch Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Voted this morning. Got to the polling place at 6:40 AM, 40 minutes after the polls opened, and was out at 8:00. I waited on line, reading a Dashiell Hammett novel, trying to politely ignore the older gentleman behind me who didn't bring a book and kept trying to make conversation, and pondering whether this was all worth the one-in-ten-million chance that my vote will actually matter. Oh, and one of the candidates for a county board position came by and shook my hand.
Trenitay Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Why should America care about "foreign opinion" at all? Why shouldnt we? We're not the only people on this planet. Hey now, my mother is huge and don't you forget it. The drunk can't even get off the couch to make herself a vodka drenched sandwich. Octopus suck.
