Icewind Dale 2 keeps crashing

It crashes in character creation window. I get fine up to the point when I must choose appereance. Then screen freezes and moment later game crashes.

Initial googling seems to put blame on NVidia drivers (I have NVidia card) and it was suggested that I use the same trick I had to use for PS:T (that had corrupted spell effects), namely stripping all 3D acceleration away. It didn't help. I don't get error message but after freezing screen goes black for a moment and then game crashes all the same.

I even went as far strippin ALL acceleration away but it didn't help at all.

Any ideas?

edit: supposedly patch 2.01 saves me from this horror, but umm...where can I find it with BIS being buried and all?

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

If you are using Vista, have you tried XP compatibility mode?

No, I have XP :(

The thing is I saw it there at fileplanet but I'm not going to register and give money to that site

edit: found it from here

Now I just have to wait and see if it works...

must I take 3D acceleration off after patching?

You don't have to give money to the site, just register with some junk e-mail address. Anyway that is what I did. Often I go to other places to get my downloads but fileplanet is the only sure bet where I can locate the hard to find stuff.

I didn't have any problems with 3d acceleration when I played it some months ago, so I would guess no.

Cool, let's test then...

You can pay, and that gets you to the download quicker. Otherwise they have a line form up for those who download for free. The thing is, anytime I need to go there to download something there isn't a line. Lines only form up for the new stuff, like the Space Siege demo. IWD2 patch... No line in sight.

3E > 2E

Besides, I don't have IWD1 installed

IWD1 is better game, but 3E as a system beats 2E with a landmile. More varied, more complex, less idiocies etc.

3E PWNS 2E

[/Volo argument]

Like I said I don't have IWD1 installed and I've never finished IWD2 anyway

i wouldn't say that 3E is more complex than 2E at all... quite the contrary, as the simplification going from 2E to 3E was actually a selling point. 2E is quirky, and very idiosyncratic, with all sorts of strange exceptions to rules. 3E broke everything out into skills and feats, rather than the strange methods of specializing different classes, so there were more options for your characters, though i think it is still much less complex overall. i think a good way to describe things, however, is that your characters can actually have a much more complex makeup in 3E, compared to 2E in which dual/multi-classing was a mess.

btw, on topic, the IE games all have issues with direct draw. i just fired up BG1 and i had to disable direct draw (via the dxdiag option) in order to get rid of the black boxes around various things. the other option was to go into 16-bit texture mode and enable software blt, but that hosed performance (which seems odd, given that i have a rather fast machine). i had a similar problem with IWD1, but i didn't have to enable the blt, i.e., 16-bit sufficed so i didn't have a performance issue. i suppose there's something similar going on with IWD2, but obviously there is a patch that resolves the issue. not so for earlier incarnations of the engine.

taks

comrade taks... just because.

Thanks for that information! Maybe I'll try that next time I play PS:T in order to avoid the mouse trails that I get once I try the workaround with lowering the hardware acceleration, and inform the people who for some reason can't do that.

I feel really stupid for this, but I've been stuck in the beginning...

The first mission given to you at Palisade is about fixing the crane at Docks. So, I've got the wheel and now all I have to do is put it on the crane, literally "use" it on the crane

How the heck I do that? I can't even put it in on one of the quick item slots. I even went to download Manual as PDF but it has been of no use

when I click on the crane I only get the question mark symbol and the text saying "this mighty wooden crane looks like it was designed to haul lumber up the cliff to the town of Targos above"

Hmm, that sounds about as far as I go into that game....can you click on the crane itself or maybe talk to someone by the crane? The quest giver maybe?

I later checked Gamebanshee walkthrough. I did this exactly right.

First, tell the quest giver crane is broken. He tells you to go meet the dwarf in the dock who is apparently somewhat responsible for it (or something). He just says I should've told about it sooner, but then he just says something along the lines "it is very easy so even you can do it. Take this wheel and put it in its place."

After getting the wheel I went up to town to meet the owner of the lumber (as I was told to). Well, he apparently doesn't want to have anything to do with the damn crane and tells my party to go and fix it.

Then cue in journey back to Docks and the crane...

Push ALT, the frobbable part of the crane should highlight in blue, like any a container. If it doesn't reload from an autosave and try again.

Otherwise, well, you're screwed. Reinstall and repatch.

nvm guys, the upper part of the crane is up in the town. That's where I must put the wheel

Why the **** game told me to go to Docks and in there to put the damn thing to its place? :)
