So I got my hands on a playstation one for cheap. Could you recommend some games for it? I would prefer RPGs, but all genres are welcome. Also I would like to know what the best two-player games are.

Thanks

Survival Horror

- Silent Hill

- Resident Evil 3

- Fear Effect

- Resident Evil 2

- Resident Evil (best voice acting... ever)

- Dino Crisis

- Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

RPG

- Koudelka

- Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

- Front Mission

- Parasite Eve

- Final Fantasy 8

Strat

- Ogre Battle

- Tactics Ogre

- Warzone 2100

1. Metal Gear Solid*

Spyro games (1, 2, 3)

Syphon Filter I & II (maybe 3 too, dunno)

Ape Escape

Final Fantasy IX (VII and X sucks *****)

Medievil (1 & 2, esp. 2)

Tekken 3

Tenchu 1 & 2

Resident Evil 2 & 3

Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy VI

Crash Bandicoot(s)

GTA 2

Driver 2

Dino Crisis

And propably bazillion other titles I don't remember. Ape Escape was my first PSone game and it still is my favourite platform game :)

You'd do better with buying PS2 though, games got on average a lot better

*even if you dislike later installations in the series this is ace game

My top picks would propably be:

1. Metal Gear Solid

2. Syphon Filter II

3. Tekken 3

Inappropriate term modified.

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

- OverPowered Godzilla (OPG)

If you like fighting games Rival Schools is crazy Japanese awesomeness.

I agree with Darque that Resident Evil is the pinnacle of voice acting.

"You were almost a Jill Sandwich!”

Most hilarious line ever found on videogame - and for entirely wrong reasons

edit: If I mention RE's how the heck can I forget Silent Hill?

GET THAT GAME

Darque's post is full of great games. I would add:

RPG:

Suikoden II

Scrolling Shooter:

Strikers 1945

Woah, you people are fast. Thanks for the lists. So are there any co-op or otherwise multiplayer games that would take advantage of the second controller? I could have gotten a PS2, but since I'm not really into console gaming I thought that I'd try to get a little more up to date with some RPG series and other forgotten gems.

Also it was really cheap...

The most 2-player fun I had with PS1 was definitely Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Other games I enjoyed...

X-Com: Enemy Unknown (yes, you can get it on PS1 and it's awesome turn-based goodness)

Doom / Doom 2

Hexen

Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat (fantasy RTS)

X COM?!?!?

No, I have to say no. While that game was awesome the wait time for the actions for the enemy and civillians were a damn killer. In one mission I had to wait 15 minutes for the damn game to finish its turn!

^ Hmmm. Was that on PC? I don't recall it being a big problem on the console version.

No, that was the console. The PC version I had took only minutes, if that long.

Vagrant Story (The best Squaresoft game of all time easily)

Tactics Ogre

Tales of Phantasia

Tekken 3

Silent Hill

Xenogears (the first CD. You can throw the other CDs in the bin, and read a faq for the rest of the story)

Street Fighter Alpha Whatever

Don't touch Suikoden with a 300 foot pole.

Suikoden II is the best RPG for the system.

-Tobal 2

-Front Mission 2,

best combat presentation and deepest strategic gameplay from all of the Front Mission series. But the bloody games take about 5 minutes to load a saved game since PS1 is a slow beast. On its own, the story and its setting is unique because the protagonist is a South East Asian nationality, a Bangladesh.

Never owned a PS but I remember vividly playing a game ONCE called Bushido Blade. For the 40 or so minutes I played it, I thought at the time, that it was the most RAD game I'd have ever played.

Still have fond memories of it. Good times.

What he said. These are among the best action/adventure games ever, up there with Psychonauts. Get them ASAP.

Yeah, Bushido Blade was pretty hardcore. No hitpoints or anything, you'd be parrying and suddenly you get sliced on the chest then next thing you know, you're dead.

The only one that rivals it is Xenogears, but as you already said, the 2nd disc is pretty much garbage for that one, while Suikoden II was great all the way through.

Tales of Phantasia was good, but didn't realize it was on the playstation as I played it on SNES.

Silent Bomber. Awsome action game.

(Approved by Fio, so feel free to use it)

For some arcade action co-op fun I love Jedi Power Battles.

Though it has some camera issues which makes the game frustrating for other people (but not me, because I <3 any opportunity to run around with a lightsaber doing cool combos)
