I have to say, Alien3 has the BEST opening sequence of a movie EVAR. Music, mood, scene. Pure awesome.

Sadly, I only watch Alien3 for the opening scene... then I remember the original script... then I cry.

What opening sequence?

I liked Lawrence of Arabia, uncut. Gave me time to cook dinner.

EDIT: Obsidian could have do an homage to the Lawrence opening, by having an intro sequence lasting five years in which we see nothing, before a spaceship moves incredibly slowly across the screen. Emphasising the total emptiness of space.

tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.

I would say the movies split on an even-odd framework.

Alien 1 and 3 are solo aliens vs. unarmed humans and mostly focus on suspense/horror. Lots of people being hunted down by one alien. There's some kind of deeper symbolism/message stuff going on with 3, relating to gender and incarceration and religion, but I never could exactly puzzle that out.

Aliens 2 and 4:R are more action movies with a group of armed humans vs. lots of aliens. Less suspense/horror (although still plenty of gruesome deaths).

Interestingly, the androids in 1 and 3 are "bad," and the ones in 2 and 4 (WR) are "good" (although I find it fascinating that the one in 3 was a Bishop lookalike, precisely to get Ripley to trust him, although he appears only at the end).

I have not liked the AvP movies, but I still maintain it is possible to do good AvP stories and games, it's just a shame the movies were so bad.

I know I have a childish sense of humour, but I really like the idea of a five year (real time) opening sequence as described above. You have it on the DVD as the 'director's cut. Instant world record. Just program the stars to move according to an algorithm.

Alien was good for it's time but it is hardly scary or holds up as well as its sequel today.

Aliens ftw!

For me Aliens is clearly the winner.

Partly that is because I prefer action to horror, partly it is because I was much younger when I saw aliens compared to alien.

So with that being said I cant really say for sure which movie is the "best" but I definitely enjoy Aliens alot more.

I dont think I have seen alien more than once, but I have seen aliens at least 5-6.

As for the worst. Both alien 3 and ressurection are bad, but action>horror so alien 3 is the looser.

Don't even get me started on Samuel L. He's terrible. ESPECIALLY in Deep Blue Sea. Sorry, but even in Star Wars. My own opinion: he was brilliant in Pulp Fiction, and hasn't acted well in a movie since. I guess he did passable voice acting in the Incredibles...

Alien was the best. It was the first. It was completely original. It was directed by *the* man, Ridley Scott.

Alien was a true suspense/horror film.

Aliens was typical James Cameron. Fun, action, catchy quotes.

Alien 3. Shoot me in the head for seeing that movie. TERRIBLE.

Resurrection... why? Just why?

I disliked the AvP movies intensely. Actually I only saw the first one. Would never see the second one for any reason I can imagine.

I agree AvP was pretty bad. However, with that in mind, expecting a horrid film when viewing Requim... that movie is B classic. I really liked it... laughed my @$$ off.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space.

Aliens would be my favorite. It had horror, sci-fi, good script, excellent actors and weapons :ermm: I even liked Burke, he played the bad guy so well, that I've grown to like him.

Alien 3 wasn't really bad. The real failure of that movie is that it killed off three excellent characters. I could forgive for Bishop and Hicks but eradicating the main character was lame. Aside from this the movie was interesting since it was the exact opposite of Aliens: it had no weapons at all. Also the setting (penal colony, only one woman and dark corridors on a remote planet) was fitting.

Alien Resurrection had nicely built chars and acceptable setting. What it didn't have was a good story and some diversity (not even a single planet visited).

AvP could have been epic. Unfortunately they have failed us with these movies. The first was endurable but the second was a real mercy shot to the franchise. A small kid with his father wanders in the forest. OMFG. Some teens around a pool. Pizza delivery stuff. Weak aliens. Stupid predators. Please. Lameness over lameness.

I'd go with the first one. Alien was pure wow when I first saw it. And f*ckin tense. A good idea to start with (in space no one can hear you scream), the movie had a unique atmosphere and it was backed by impressive visuals, especially the elements executed by Giger. Acting was also really good and I liked the fact that characters in Alien were all civilians and thus more vulnerable than trained soldiers. Plus, all the bickering made them even more human and real. One of the things that turned me off in the sequel were exactly the characters (some of them). Yeah, those bad ass, uber ****y marines really bring the sequel down. Plus, the idea wasn't as fresh anymore. It wasn't as scary either. I'm one of those people that love James Cameron's work (T1 and T2 are among my all time favorite movies) but Ridley Scott's Alien is, for me, the best of the series.

As for the worst of them, I really can't say. I only saw Alien 3 once, a long time ago, and it's a very blurry memory. Resurrection, I remember a bit better but it's still blurry. So yeah...

Who the hell were the 3 people who voted Alien as the worst?

Alien and Aliens, are the best no contest there.

The other two are ok in their own fashion.

Alien resurrection annoys me years after having seen it. Alien 3 you can just sleep through and be none the worse off.

I saw Alien Resurrection on the same day as I saw Mortal Kombat Annihilation at the theater. Does wonders putting the movie into perspective.

(Actually I like pretty much everything about AR except the hybrid alien ending bit which just conceptually sucked.)

LOL

I actually agree with you....

A:R isn't as bad as people give it credit for....You just have to be able to accuaint yourself with a bit of a comicbookish style before you get into it. Being an avid Robert rodrigues fan......It wasn't hard for me...

I have to say though, the newborn DID get one of the most epic deathscenes in the history of deathscenes...

Edited by xalener

Well plot wise I don't mind the newborn scene, but execution wise its...not so good.

Yeah.......but at least it died well.

If I had it my way, something as important as a Human-alien hybrid should've had it's own movie.

Not with that terrible design, but the concept is great.

The best of the Alien films was the second one: Aliens!

The best of the Alien films was the second one: Aliens!

Nope. Alien > Aliens

Nope. Alien was good, but Aliens was better. Alien 3 was the worst!

My favs are Cameron Aleins and Jeunet Alien Ressurection. They are the strongest in my opinion. Then goes Finchers Alein 3 and the least intresting for me is the first one by Ridly Scott who is IMO the weakest director from this four. I am really amazed of underestimated 4th Alein that is for me super cool, very stylie and also has a marvelous cast of actors. Most ppl who didn't like it are probably americans (don't want to offend). Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of the most awesome directors out there, he havent done a single weak movie. You should watch his classic "Delicatessen" and "the City of lost children" wich were made with Mark Karo and his solo "Amelie" and "The Long Engagement". Every scene in 4th Alien is so cool and stylish that you can watch it and purely enjoy non-stop. Not a single boring moment. Perfect sence of that mood of the 'crazy things going on a lonely spacestation somewhere in da space', and all the jokes are very nice. Ripley: "Say folk.. fukc", "Whom do I have to fukc with to get out of this ship?" Perelman: "I can help you with..maybe not the ship", Perelman: "Earth.. what a ****hole" and when he shot a spider and many other moments. And I can definatly say that Ressurection is the most visually beatifull part. Not cos of the special effects but of the photography work. That scenes when for exp pirates first time come aboard the main ship and camera slowly shows them from the feet and then all together in sync with music. When Ripley jumps acros the bridge to reach Betty in slowmo, when Alein rips through this guy whith glasses chest into the bad guy head - it's actually fills like an orgasm and many other. The quality of shooting is superb. And I like all characters there.

I as I can guess from the screenshots I have seen, Aliens RPG will be based mostly on the most popular second part. Which is cool for me :shrugz:
