3rd Person, RPG, Sci-Fi, Squad Based

Don't worry Tale, games made for the same console are just too similar for Wayland.

Dont worry Nick_i_am, Tale can answer by himself.

They probably ment story wise it will go in different directions

Our stories and gameplay are both pretty different.

3rd person? Damn... there goes any sense of fear.

Wrong.

Alone in the Dark is scary.

Its third person and uses up less than 50 polygons per character!

Yep.

First Person or Third Person is irrelevant when it comes to the scary creep factor.

I'm actually kind of happy over the choice. First person speaks to me of restricted viewpoint and ensuing clumsiness and it's not something I wan't to deal with in a roleplaying game. There are other ways to make the player feel scared or tense than keeping the in-your-face "boo"-factor in. The choice also tells volumes over what kind of vibe they are likely to go for: Aliens, not Alien. "Keep everyone alive" instead of plain old "survive".

That said, if this was Thief 4 and the developers would give me this kind of news, I'd bite off faces before calming down. I can sympathise with the folks whose expectations were crushed. I'm not saying that the situations are similar, there's no set norm "how an Aliens rpg should play", just that I'm sure there's a wealth of preferences over the viewpoint and mechanics.

Uwe Boll will do a Thief movie adaptation. Garrett will be played by Tara Reid. :)

What?!

*starts to foam at the mouth*

I can't stand this travesty, I won't stand this encroachment on sacred ground! Uwe Boll is advancing on the legacy of the Looking Glass like a slobbering rapist on a nubile maid. That piece of myopic waste is unclenching his artistic shlong to thrust into the the pristine pearly vaults of Theif goodness. He could barely film his way out of a cardboard tube, what is he doing on an intelligent property that's lauded amidst circles in the know for being the very peak of storytelling and artistic direction! Boll wouldn't be worthy enough to play a gaurd, not to mention direct a steampunk movie!

Theif doesn't even translate well into the film medium, the mission format is so tight and intricate that it can only hold a true fan in place, the story will be ruined by adapting it for the unthinking action movie masses. They'll eat popcorn from stupid bowls and laugh at the ****ing Tara Reid. If it's a Theif product, it has to have all the hallmarks of one, like sneaking and blackjacks and goddamn burricks, I won't take a movie that's Theif in name only! Why doesn't he make his own steampunk move if he's so inclined? He can call it House of the Steam Siege and sit on his fat German ass! But I'm sure Boll won't do that because the name, Theif, carries a lot of prestige and money. He'll produce a load of stinking coprolite that can't be mentioned in the same sentence as the legendary games!

And it won't even be in the first person perspective!!!

Something like that?

Hey, now that would be interesting. Uwe boll should do a Thief movie but the entire movie is done in first person view. A full length movie done in First person view! has there ever been one? If anyone can pull it off, it would be Uwe Boll!

Did you see his version of Bloodrayne?

You wouldn't think it was possible, but he managed to make a movie featuring Kristanna Loken running around in as little clothes as possible completely uninteresting...

@Musopticon: Agreed. First person view is for the adrenaline kick. Not much else you can use the tunnel vision for. Didn't J.E. Sawyer hint at, that the people and the characters were more important than the action. Maybe I am just reading too much into what little information is available. Feel free to correct me (trick question).

Well if it must be party-based, I better get fun squad based combat like FOT (which supposedly ripped off JA2 which I've yet to play).

EDIT: **** this edit system.

I wouldn't mind something more akin to Republic Commando. But I'm practically a fanboy of that game.

"Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."

I would expect the Aliens in the game to use the same kind of tactics they use in the films -- descending from the ceiling where they are hidden from view, or bursting suddenly up through the floor, and otherwise using stealth tactics, to ambush the humans.

I hope "fear" is a key mechanic in the game, i.e. as they ambush the space marines in your squad, they may "freeze" in paralysis, fumble their weapon, or run in terror. That's true to the "tone" of the films.

Suddenly remembering how fun instantly spawning Hook Horrors were... :o

There has to be other ways. Startling effects are not as fun as gradually building terror :)

Indeed, I'd prefer situations such as having to choose two corridors/buttons and wondering which is going to have/do what, making decisions about what to do with your squad members or what gamble to take to get out of wherever you are, having only one shot at getting that Alien and wondering what's going to improve your chances.

Since I'm not such a big fan of the Alien setting anyway, I'm happy that the gameplay is something I know I am going to enjoy. But it's all about the execution, isnt it?

I think a part of me is secretly happy it is squad-based. So long as they pull it off better than NWN/DS/KOTOR. I'm keen for some tactical action.

This is all speculation, obviously, but one of the great things about the second aliens film is that it spent the whole of its first half building up the tension with the 'where are all the people? what are these things?! oh my god we're stranded!' then the second half letting it all out with 'die you alien scum! we've got a plan! they're all dead! i've got to get Mewt!'

It was essentally an action film, it's the way that people most remember it, but a good 45 minutes of it goes JUST building tension.

Thats the way they used to do all movies, now it's straight to reverse cowgirl, no foreplay at all.

Na na  na na  na na  ...

greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER.

That is all.

Not being a big 1st person shooter UI player/fan, I don't mind 3rd person...sometimes I even find 3rd person to be moodily creepy. True, not as much as first person, but it can still work. Depends, as always, on how it's done.

It would be nice if they'd at least allow for a 1st person viewpoint if you wanted it, tho. I mean, either viewpoint can seem overly restrictive at certain points in gameplay, and I've come to enjoy being able to flip back and forth at a touch of the mouse wheel.

Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.
