Well, the gameplay wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. In terms of setting and atmosphere it was quite awesome.

Also, i think it was the first game to use voxels. I could be wrong, though.

Looks like the ever reliable wikipedia agrees with you.

...And if it didn't, you could always change it so it did! Wikipedia, the poor man's referreed journal, complete with no referree!

Anyhow, I'm still jonesin' for a good 40k experience. Most of what we've seen on the PC for Warhammer has centered on the strategy element, and that's in real time. I remember an old SSI title that was turn based, but still strategy. A real CRPG would be a break in the trend and there's a lot to explore in the universe that remains untapped.

THQ has that license and they seem ready to milk it for all it's worth. Currently there's an MMO, FPS, a PC RTS, and a handheld RTS in the works at least.

Yeah, but that's an MMO, an FPS, and two RTSes. I'd like to see a CRPG for it. Of all those, I'm likely to pick up the MMO, but I'd rather have a tighter story than an MMO can provide.

I'm pretty much okay with anything on the list, although I wasn't particularly excited by the Bladerunner idea. I could see a good game, but I think it would be hard to capture the films in a CRPG.

I alwas thought Nar Shaddaa in Kotor2 was a good attempt, if a bit lacking in detail.

But I am all with you on the WH40k stuff. Maybe would could create a Cult of Obsidian when the MMO takes off :p

It would still be nice with a single player crpg though. The WH40k is the darkest, bleakest and most vicious setting I've seen for a game system.

I don't see a lot of room for an adventure that's right for an RPG for 40k. But, if people with the power to make it want it made, I'm sure they could churn something out.

Edit: Probably a Diablo clone.

That would be like saying, the only obvious thing you could do with the D&D setting would be to make RTS games ;)

I don't know if you ever played any of the games which aren't about squad based combat (Rogue Trader, Necromunda or Inquisitor) or even better read any of the novels (Gaunts Ghosts, Eisenhorn trilogy, The Last Chancers or the Horus Heresy books).

More material than you can shake a tentacle at.

I don't really like it when RTS and RPG games occupy the same universe... which is why I can't really see a Warhammer game being any good.

That said, it doesn't matter what universe it is - a good RPG company can fashion an amazing RPG out of some of the most anti-RPG settings. Probably because RPG scope can vary wildly - from giant cities and tavel accross an entire continent, to a single town for an entire game... and the story can vary just as wildly... in fact I'm intrigued by Bethesda's scope with Fallout 3. I kind of like the close-to-home feel of it's story: you're not a god or anything, you're just looking for your father.

So far, what I've seen of Fallout 3 is living up to most of my expectations, actually, and exceeding some. At the very least, it's not giving me that "oh this doesn't look good" feeling of Deus Ex 2 as I followed it's development.

Regarding the pre-used IPs of BG, IWD, KOTOR, etc... I'm sick of them and would like Obsid to do something new... moreover I'd like Obsid to make a game that feels FULL and COMPLETE... graphically, rules-wise, quest-wise, etc.

Although I'd love another Vampire game along the vein of Bloodlines (1st person, etc). Or just a nice non-linear FPS in general (like Deus Ex).

I haven't played any of them, but am looking at them on wikipedia now.

Inquisitor: "Unlike a tactical wargame or Role-playing Game, Inquisitor describes itself as a "narrative" skirmish game, and the emphasis is on spinning a good story along the lines of a great action movie or adventure novel, rather than focusing on winning at all costs."

Necromunda again sounds and is described as a skirmish game.

Rogue Trader: The first edition of the 40k rule book? Ooh, freelance explorers.

Inquisitor sounds good. Though Rogue Trader definitely does lend more against what I said than the other two. I just have this image from my limited exposure to the setting that it's a little too desperate and restrictive for any exploration or freedom. Rogue Trader sounds like my concept was a bit wrong.

That's exactly how I see Alien and Bladerunner. One of the reasons I'm a little leary of the Aliens project is because I don't see how it will translate into a good CRPG. ...But, hey, if it's a good game, it's a good game.

How come Cyberpunk got two entries? Bladerunner is very much a cyberpunk movie, you know. Those two entries should be consolidated into one, I think (which would then presently have a very strong lead).

I voted for Cyberpunk myself because I'm a huge fan of the genre. Something in Gibsons original Sprawl-setting would be nice. The Bladerunner-setting works as well, but a game there would risk falling too close to the movie, otherwise there really isn't much point in using the name Bladerunner.

An Inquisitor RPG would be sublime, but I think a setting with less fluff would allow for more original content. Then again, the fluff is one of WH40k's strengths.

It's like Deus Ex, but with more technology, sometimes borderline magic. Usually there's a bias towards online society, crimes committed therein and biomechanics, e.g cybernetic protheses and implantation. Games like System Shock are cyberpunk, straight and true.

I never got into the Conan setting.

Something just occured to me. When we talk about any of these settings, are we talking rulesets and all, or just the setting itself?

I would definitely like to see a low-magic fantasy RPG (from Middle Earth, even though I am not sure if it would work in such a world, to some kind of dark witch-hunt theme)...

Edit: I don't care about the mechanic's system as long as it's decent...

Setting, background, fluff, characters etc. Not sure if all of them even have rulesets. Some of them do and would be continuation of stories, some of them don't and would probably be a first for a franchise.

Not having played Deus Ex, I'm not sure whether or not it is cyberpunk. But the genre doesn't have to be ALL THAT technological, although the technology is certainly in focus. Biomechanics isn't necessarily a factor. Gibson's second trilogy (Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties) is significantly less technological than Neruomancer. The focus on (or at least presence of) online societies though is key. The term Cyberpunk is coined from the word Cyberspace after all (which I believe was made up by Gibson). Interestingly enough, or society has moved so much towards the online world Gibson imagined in the eighties that it's almost scary. And the genre of Cyberpunk has thus almost played out it's role. Gibson's latest book even takes place in our world but still it really feels like Cyberpunk when reading it.

That book, by the way, comes heavily recommended. One of the best books I've ever read and definitely Gibson's best since Neuromancer (could actually even be better, I'm undecided). A sequel of sorts is also on it's way, which I'm greatly looking forward to.
