alanschu
To me having to go to a prostitute is for instant gratification and nothing else. What's more instant than jerking off? It's cleaner, cheaper and you don't have to worry about disease and laws. Perhaps they find sex with a woman to be a more enjoyable sex than masturbation. If it truly was just for the instant gratification of achieving orgasm and ejaculating, then prostitution wouldn't be so pervaisive.
Calax
why is it that every tic or mildly abnormal behavior is caused by some sort of abuse? Girls aren't nymphettes because they got abused by uncle lester in the feed storage that one time on the farm while mommy and daddy were out shopping. They like sex because sex is fun. Gorgon
Its an easy way to make money. I find myself hard pressed to condemn anyone for it. Girls with good parents don't grow up to be prostitutes Which is the cause and effect though. If prostitution was legal, would it be any different. As for stripper, I actually know someone that is an exotic dancer, and my parents have known her parents for years. I wouldn't say that their family was particularly dysfunctional, so nyah nyah Mr. Stern! I actually do know women that have no beefs against pornography either, so I don't know if it's necessarily just a guy thing to say. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it was a position held more by males however. I don't know what their opinions are of prostitution though. Pop
There's no need for prostitution when there are bars, clubs and colleges out there... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't think that's the case. You know how they now have "hunting tours" where they gaurantee a kill for a certain amount? You pay, and then they release the bird near you and you get to shoot it. Comparing prostitution to going out to a bar and picking up someone is akin to comparing traditional hunting, where you might just sit in a blind all day and come home with nothing, to pay-by-kill hunting. Kind of a crude analogy, but it works. As for prostitution, I'm not one usually one to advocate the prohibition of vices, but prostitution in some ways is like child pornography: It's perverse, but moreover, the people involved are exploited. We prohibit child porn in the interests of reducing abuse and exploitation of children (and we allow "simulated" child porn), and we prohibit prostitution in the interests of reducing the abuse and exploitation of women. Same general principle. I wouldn't call someone who frequents brothels a sick **** in the same way, however. The easiest solution to call for is regulation of the industry, because we can't very well get rid of it. Set up brothels and make it incumbent upon the law to protect the women, instead of a pimp or madam. However, as in so many cases, government involvement might not do a goddamn thing for anyone. Walsingham
Firstly, I think taks was bang on about the false premise of assuming that making prostitution illegal prevents it. It blatantly doesn't. It does, however, concentrate the protitution under oragnised crime and pimping, rather than permitting the women to run themselves. In fact i've run into a couple of feminists who took the view that prostitution being illegal was oppression of women, not the other way round. Having said this I've met enough actual prostitutes (steady you giggling gerties, I used to research organised crime) to know that many of them are in the game for bad reasons. Prostitution, and the use of prostitutes is a dirty business. I don't condone it. But I do know that the last thing these women need is to have approbation heaped on their existing worries. I could go on, but I have a theory that no-one reads more than two paragraphs. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. taks
As for prostitution, I'm not one usually one to advocate the prohibition of vices, but prostitution in some ways is like child pornography: It's perverse, but moreover, the people involved are exploited. this is sort of what i was getting at when i said "not everyone against prostitution is that way because of religion." in general, it is very hard to say that prostitution is more good than bad for society. the negatives (as noted by pops) far outweigh any benefits. many people simply feel that this is justification for criminalizing it. personally, i think it is a negative, though i cannot drop my "stay out of my life uncle sam" attitude. the latter freedom, IMO, far outweighs the negatives of prostitution. if it is legalized, ever, it should be heavily regulated ala las vegas cathouses. remove some of the negatives (i.e. pimps, exploitation, etc.) and it isn't as bad overall. taks comrade taks... just because. Walsingham
I should say that culture makes a massive difference. Attitudes in Thailand among younger women illustrate this very well (although there is massive sex slavery in that country so don't go using it as an excuse). I don't think it's exactly crazy to use a prostitute. In concept I don't see how it's much worse than being, say, a paid drugs guinea pig. Or a customer services monkey. "It wasn't lies. Girls with good parents don't grow up to be prostitutes.Heh, that's such a stereotype. Now, if you could please offer some evidence to back your claims about the "majority" of prostitutes, maybe you wouldn't sound so hollow. Face it pal, women like sex as much as you and me do, if not more. Sucks that it's them who get to choose in the end, huh? Granted, many of them are exploited and abused by organized crime, and some are forced into it in order to feed their children or whatever. But there are some that choose it willingly too. What, are they all messed up in the head? That kind of condescending crap always makes me smirk. And, even if they all have endured those supposed traumatic childhood experiences, what does it have to do with it? Are you (and I don't mean you specifically) implying that their judgement is impaired in some way? Maybe they are clinically unfit to lead the life they choose? Because, as a matter of fact, I'm inclined to believe the opposite. What with all that "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" stuff. Maybe those "scarred" girls just aren't as skittish and puritanical as the rest of society. Maybe living a harder life changes the way one sees many things. I'm not sure, because I haven't asked every last of them if they want out. I'm all for legal and regulated prostitution.
