I'd rather see Obsidian do something else to be honest. A KotOR III chief amongst them, but even without going back to that franchise, there's at least 10 RPGs I'd like to see Obsidian make off the top of my head that I would enjoy a lot more than this. Never really cared for the aliens/predator stuff.

In all seriousness, though.... If Obs is indeed developing an Alien game, I'm fine with that. I've always wanted an Obsidian game set in a dystopic universe (ie Fallout :ph34r: ) and Alien is the grandaddy of all sci-fi dystopian futures (3 years before Blade Runner, which remains the standard, but not the first) I'd also like to see them develop that horror element that comes with the territory.

 

As long as they excise the Predator from the setting, I think it has great potential. Adding the Predator stuff usually just makes for action, which isn't what I'd look for in an Alien RPG. I'm looking for dark, queasy horror.

 

And if they're serious about it, they'll make all the party NPCs expendable :ph34r:

I still can't imagine how Alien RPG works though.

 

Like:

 

System Shock?

 

FallOut?

 

Jagged Alliance?

 

HellGate?

 

Diablo?

 

I don't think Alien franchise would do well as an RPG if you play as a marine, but playing as an alien on the other hand...

Why couldn't the franchise work if you play as a marine?

 

Especially if you went with a System Shock approach.

I feel that if it follows the System shock approach, it may create unnecessary competition between the other Alien product which is an FPS.

 

In addition, comparison will also be made with the upcoming spiritual to System Shock 2, Bioshock which consists of experienced developers in this kind of genre. Hence I don't think its a good idea for Obsidian to copy.

 

Anyway, I just can't imagine an Alien game purchasing ammo/armor/items through vending machines.

Ok, what is Gearbox Software doing in all this? They're the team responsible for tactical combat games like Brothers In Arms. Will this be a team-based tactical combat games? Are Gearbox and Obsidian co-developing this? Or are Obsidian using technology licensed from Gearbox? Gearbox are hiring people with Unreal Engine skills right now. Are they supposed to be working on this project or something else?
