You don't have to pay anything to register at SA but you only get some of the forums and features unless you pay.  At least, that's how it worked when I registered a few months ago, I didn't pay a penny.

not true. there's been a fee since 2001 i think. there's no way you've been abled to register for free unless some bought you a gift account.

I'm very keen on this project that's for certain. Hopefully Obsidian will make this game in the kind of survival horror/RPGish mix that System Shock 2 used quite effectively. They have a wonderful opportunity here, especially if they try to follow the comics storyline moreso than the movies (which is really depressing, but infinitely more awesome).

and many of the people who get banned buy their account back. plus theres the money from the avatars, archives access and platinum accounts. i dont think the site is about "business" at all, but thats just me. other may view it differently, and undoubtly do.

 

the reg fee is a good thing, if for no reason other than it keeps the volourn and viscs away or at least milk money from them

What I'm wondering is, if they make it about humans (and I'm assuming they are) are they going to implement melee weapons? Because going toe-to-toe with an alien in any of its incarnations is suicide. I'd think they'd just take it out, but that might bring up some balance issues, unless they start off with crap guns and work up to plasma weapons or whatever.

Perhaps you just need to focus on skills like Trap setting, Hacking, Hiding etc.

 

Add to that a bit of "Special" and it might be a good idea to invest some points in Luck

I hope that it will be set in the timeframe of Aliens. I loved the gritty, realistic atmosphere and the look and feel of the military, the weapons, the gear, the dark society...

In Alien: Ressurrection I thought that this atmosphere was ruined... Come on, doors open due to mouth smell? The world felt strange and surreal, I didn't like it.

 

I always hoped that in the next movie it became apparent that Alien 3 and 4 didn't happen and were only virtual situations that the company implanted into the imprisoned Ripley - after the ship in Aliens returned home - to test her loyalty and to pry out of her what she knows about the Aliens.

Then Hicks and Newt rescue her and somehow they end up on a ship that is on its way to a newly discovered shipwreck of these strange giant aliens from the first movie that carries more eggs... And all the way Ripley doesn't know what is real and what isn't, due to all of these virtual situations she went through. She becomes unreliable and even dangerous to the crew...

Just my thoughts...

 

I wonder though how the NPC interaction will be... There haven't been that many "NPCs" in the movies...

All that Alien talk lately hyped me up. I think I'm gonna dig out my Alien Legacy Box and watch all four movies again.

I'm wondering whether characters from the movies will be included in the RPG? Bishop? The grumpy General from Resurrection with the hairy Back? Yes yes?

Hmmmm, I hope they use influences from all over the Alien(s) franchise (such as the comic books), I really would hate to see the game based solely upon what is known via movies.

Yeah I agree that Alien: Resurrection really ruined the franchise.

 

Alien 3 was pretty bad as well, don't get me wrong. But it had some good one liners. And it would be pretty awesome to explore a barren facility on a lice infected planet, with a super-fast alien running around, popping out of ventilating shafts and pulling random NPC's up, leaving nothing but a big puddle of blood behind. Alien RPG = awesome!

 

Aliens = the best. Yes yes. Whatever, let's all just see where Obsidian takes it. I'm just happy that we'll finally see an Alien game worthy of the license.

Also, just because it's an RPG doesn't mean there has to be combat. Combat with an Alien is non trivial.
