I played this game quite awhile ago when it first game out and had a lot of fun and with some recent posts on the site, I decided to get back into the game, but had a question when replaying it. I made my lead person a sniper, but I find it hard sneaking up on people. I just always seem to get caught however I try and was wondering what types of playing style others use in this game. Do you just run and find the enemy and then work from their finding cover to take him out, or try to stealth your way through taking out your opponent one by one?

 

I just can't see taking anyone out with a knife without them knowing it. Can someone help me with this? I'd really like to have a good stealth character, which character should I do with and how should I change my playing style. I ask this here because I know that a lot of people here have played and enjoyed the game, I just want to get better at this aspect of the game. Thanks for your time.

My first game I played with my main character as a scout. He was damn good at sneaking around, and he had what looked like a silenced submachine gun that was fairly effective at taking out the enemy without drawing more attention than I could handle. :ph34r:

Yeah, you really need a scout for close range sneaky mode.

 

Obviously, the more you do somthing, the better you get, so have your guy sneak around in random encounters a lot and it will become easier.

Any character which you can raise her Interrupt skill high enough will pretty much own the game. That skill is so imbalanced it's ridiculous. I used to train Interrupt by sneaking up on an enemy that was around a corner, and getting back around the corner before they could react, without actually killing them. I used this method in Hammer and Sickle though, so I can't assure it would work in S^2/3. It should, since the engine and mechanics are the same. Since Interrupt controls not only your ability to interrupt the enemy but also your chances of not being interrupted, it's pretty much the best ability in the game and can make any character a killing machine. I made a ninja type that specialised in stealth, throwing and melee, and with his maxed out interrupt, I could solo most missions...

Knives become much more effective in Hammer and Sickle. In Silent Storm, you pretty much need to rely on the short burst for your sneaky guys, or get comfortable reloading constantly.

Snipers can become good enough at stealth to be able to sneak up close, at least in S3. From what I remember from S2 though, skills grow so slowly that if it's not something you're specialized in from the start you may as well not bother (and when it comes to medic and tech not even then).

I haven't played S3, but in S2 I didn't think skills progressed slowly at all. In fact, I was gaining one to two levels on each mission map for every character. I even got away with avoiding random encounters without the game becoming particularly hard.

Did you play the patched version of S2? If memory serves, the patch nerfed skill progression. Maybe there's been a later patch that fixed that again though.

 

When I played S2, my mechanic progressed so slowly (even though I tried having him do stuff) that in the later parts of the game he wasn't able to do anything at all. No locks were ever picked, no traps disarmed and so on. And the medic was just as bad, although it could still heal some, just not use the higher level stuff.

I'm trying to get my interrupt skill up also and had a question about this. Do you mean, going around a coner, 'having an enemy notice you' and then going back around a corner or is this after the enemies already noticed you and knows you're there?

 

Also, does Hammer and Sickle have any patches because I own it and was wondering if I needed to download any patches before I started playing, but tht'll be after I run through S2 and S3.

 

Basically what I want is a ninja type character who can sneak up and take out someone without much of a problem. Thanks again for all your help and answers so far. Really enjoying the game again.

The 1.15 is the only H&S patch there is. Keep in mind that even though it's "unofficial", it's by Novik, the lead H&S designer and programmer.

It seems like it was only my memory failing a bit, it wasn't an issue introduced by a patch rather one that was there from the start. So why you aren't affected by it I have no idea.

 

Unless you switched your crew around a lot. I did some checking and apparently the people that didn't go with you on missions but were left at the base auto-leveled (staying two levels behind you) and their skills increased quite rapidly.

Going through S2 pretty well in the Axis campaign and am having quite a bit of fun, but the stealth thing is going as well as I planned, but it'll get better with time. Having a great time though, can't wait for each mission to come.
