Different view of those who stayed. Seems pretty sensible. Except for the flooding this would not have been so bad in NO. Also, just to shoot myself in the foot...

My friends are actually hosting a little stopover for NO refugee friends headed to points unknown (usually to stay with their parents ). One couple was overjoyed to recieve pictures of their home narrowly unflooded, but was then devastated to learn that pictures had been taken Monday, before the levees even broke. Their weiner dog was unfazed, however.

My take: Serious negligence, amazing governmental denial over the course of decades re: the levees, agonizingly out-of-touch political rhetoric in the aftermath, anemic and incompetent crisis response at every level from local to federal, humanitarian disaster, race-relations disaster, public relations disaster, and a national humiliation. I'm a natural conservative in deportment, but the initial executive response was grotesque. I'm just aghast with the situation in New Orleans and angry at the uselessness of our leadership and crisis institutions.

...

The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Michael Brown, said ... relief workers had opened a mortuary and were collecting corpses, many of which have been floating down flooded streets.

And he warned looters and snipers in the city that they would soon be up against battle-hardened combat troops.

"Idiots with a gun on a rooftop" would not be allowed to derail the rescue drive, he said.

...

WTF? I thought Walter Simons was head of FEMA! :D

I think it is worth noting how hard line these chaps are compared to how our govt would be. Our blokes would be hard pressed to get permission to return fire in a built-up area like that. I'm not saying I want to be different, but a short spell could be refreshing.

Added on Edit:  Meshugger, I must apologize to you for jumping down your throat here.  Yes, the joke was in poor taste... but my reaction was based more on the piling up of anger I felt at reading many of the insulting posts in this and other threads, and I lumped all of my indignation on you.  It was unfair of me, and I'm sorry.

No harm done. As metadigital already stated, my critizism is against the goverment for handling the matter in a very ineffective way.

The devestation that has resulted from Katrina is a tradegy for everyone in the affected areas!! Hopefully with the public outcry for the slow response that the necessary aid will get through and all the stranded victims will be rescued and evacuated.. The cost not only in terms of financially rebuilding a city but the cost of the victims who lost their homes, jobs, will be difficult and I;m sure with the uncertainly many people will decide the cost is too much to return and start over again..

And what is everone's take on celebrity's getting involved .ie. donating money , if anyone saw Kayne West News1 News2 or Cyline Dion she was very emotion on larry king tonight

The hurricane proves one thing however. It shows that the US is incapable of taking care of itself in such times. In fact the response time for aid my our government has been slower that the response time it had helping the tsunami victims.

WAY TO GO BUSH!

I think it shows that he is incapable to win the war on terror as well the war on poverty as it is the poor who is now suffering. Its been days and the basic necessities of clothes, food, and electricity has not been restored. Bush took photo ops and a cursory look over on the outskirts of the disaster. Did he visit the hardest hit areas? No. Did he and his government act in a timely manner? No.

Sure he can invade countries on the drop of a dime but cannot act the timely manner when US citizens here on US soil are in need.

The US is a big country. I would wager London Bridge to a breeze-block that if it was Washington DC, the response would have been significantly different ...

I don't know. When 9/11 happened, both DC and NYC were affected. Yet we didn't have a military response for about 5 hours.

Getting troops actually into the area, airlifting thousand and thousands of people isn't easy.

It takes time just to survey where the damage is, what reaction is needed, etc.

We were a bit slow in providing relief, but it is not easy. With the tsunami all we had to do was write a check. This is a different process all together.

Heated, but I don't see any real ugliness here except for the accounts of the hurricane itself. New Orleans is, alegedly, predominantly black. Alegedly, it has a large Roman Catholic population. As long as folks aren't saying things like, "Good, I'm always glad to see black people [or] Catholics [or] Americans die," then we must be willing to countenance a frank assessment of the situation.

Some comments were perhaps ill-advised, but the discussion is progressing more or less respectfully.

As always, you may report the thread or PM me personally, but I might not agree that an offense has occured.

Some things were badly planned. the superdome idea was good up to a point, but things like the failure of power and water leading to a degree of chaos, and a failure of the sewage system were emminently predictable. A further key concept in dealing with large worried crowds is to quickly set up some means of dissemninating information to prevent rumours and quell anxiety. This is often used in crowd control, but was not done either.

Just damn sloppy. Asking around, however, I think a lot of this is down to the relatively poor standard of public officers in NO, rather than some latent racism towards the area from outside.

I saw some footage yesterday, of Australian citizens being evacuated by heavily armed police escorts, they were prepared to defend themselves against rampaging gangs and looters in the city. What kind of society is this? Do we have a shake head emoticon?

Do you know how hard I'm having to resist making a comment like "Good, I'm always glad to see Black Catholic Americans die."  It's not because I am but because you said not to.

But I'm not, because that's against forum policy so NYAH!

You're absolutely incorrigible! :madr: :D

Yeah, it looks likely that the State / City infrastructure is what failed: no tested Disaster Mitigation and Recovery plan.
