Weiser_Cain Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Aside from fighting games one of the only things I miss from my console days is Turn-based strategy game. Everything seems to be about RTS on ye olde PC but I'm sure there have been more games out there than Alpha Centauri. Got any favorites? Yaw devs, Yaw!!! (
ShadowPaladin V1.0 Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Yes but they are all console titles. I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. Deals like this kills development studios. 478327[/snapback]

Lancer Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Good old school turn-based strategy games: Stronghold (PC game set in Mystara) Warsong (Genesis) You can find the above titles through careful searching of the web There are also a lot of good turn-based strategy RPGS on the Genesis if you are interested. SNES was sadly lacking in these. Lancer
metadigital Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Civ 2 OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
Baley Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 The Battle for Wesnoth A very nice game.Free to boot.
Musopticon? Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is well worth the zots, with expansions that is. Silent Storm is more of an rpg, but the strategic element is there. Try Disciples 2 and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic too. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. Lancer Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 In terms of good console TBS RPGs: Buck Rogers(Genesis) Warriors of the Eternal Sun(Genesis) Shining Force series(Genesis) Order of the Griffon(TG16 and the best one on this list) For the PC: The Gold Box games of course Lancer
213374U Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Silent Storm. It's always nice to be in agreement with an Obsidz VIP. ^_^ - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
Pidesco Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 All of the above plus Jagged Allliance 2 and MOO2. And Civ, of course. EnderAndrew Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 All of the above, and if we're going to throw in titles like Shining Force, then I have to mention Final Fantasy Tactics.
Llyranor Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 UFO: Enemy Unknown. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Win. (Approved by Fio, so feel free to use it)
Darth_Schmarth Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Heroes III and Jagged Alliance are good examples I didn't think of! ^Asinus asinorum in saecula saeculorum
Volourn Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Warriors of the Eternal Sun is the best 'old skool' D&D game. Totally awesome. Totally sweet. Totally fun. It CRUSHES the Gb games. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
Leferd Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 The Total War series are turn based strategy games with a real time tactical engine. Does that count? "Things are funny...are comedic, because they mix the real with the absurd." - Buzz Aldrin."P-O-T-A-T-O-E" - Dan Quayle
Pidesco Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 The Total War series are turn based strategy games with a real time tactical engine. Does that count? I think it should. But I think the turn based part of the game doesn't stand very well by itself. What would be cool would be Civ with real time battles like in Total War. Weiser_Cain Posted July 10, 2005 Author Posted July 10, 2005 Maybe I was unclear, I'm only looking for PC games. Yaw devs, Yaw!!! (
Musopticon? Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 You can find each and every game mentioned here to be playable on PC. Be it through emulation or out of the box. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. Weiser_Cain Posted July 11, 2005 Author Posted July 11, 2005 I'm over my emulation phase. Zsnes is king. Yaw devs, Yaw!!! (
metadigital Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Play Rome:Total War. That is a proper noun in the vocative case, i.e. a command! OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
zer"0" Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Another vote here for Disciples II. And one for the old school... :: Warlords III : Darklords Rising. :: -- may require a bit of finesse getting it to run on current systems. http://www.warlorders.com/howto.html
Gorth Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Lords of Midnight, Doomdarks revenge, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 & Disciples 2 for sheer entertainment value. If you want more "serious" turn based strategy (i.e. simulation), I haven't found anything that beats Pacific War & War in Russia, both available as freeware downloads from the publishers homepage (Matrix games). “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Lancer Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Warriors of the Eternal Sun is the best 'old skool' D&D game. Totally awesome. Totally sweet. Totally fun. It CRUSHES the Gb games. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Warriors of the Eternal Sun was arguably better than the Gold Box games, yes. As good as Warriors of the Eternal Sun was, Order of the Griffon (a similarly styled game) was so much better still. Lancer
