Zagor Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Making my first post here... Hope this hasn't been done before, but I would like to see the forummembers review scores for some of the most well known rpgs and action rpgs around, all collected in one thread. Just the scores and maybe some small comment to each game, to prevent it from being to long for anyone to read. I also included some games I haven't played myself, to see others opinions of them. Here's my list: Baldurs Gate 1 : 80% (to much pointless walking) Baldurs Gate 2 : 96% Icevind Dale 1 : 90% Icewind Dale 2 : 90% Planescape Torment : 92% Fallout 1 : 94% Fallout 2 : 96% Vampire Bloodlines : 90% (would have been 96% without the bugs) Temple of elemental evil : 80% (90% without bugs) Neverwinter Nights : 90% (Gets the high score much because of the toolset) KOTOR 1 : 85% KOTOR 2 : 85% (better story and dialogue than 1 , but less polished) Morrowind 65% (very boring to walk for hours and hours) Dungeon Siege 60% Diablo : Haven't played it... Diablo 2 : 80% System Shock 2 : 96% (Ancient graphics but best atmosphere ever) Arx Fatalis : Haven't played it... Gothic : Haven't played it... Gothic 2 : 80% (To hard in beginning, to easy later on) Soulbringer : 60 % Wizardry 8 : Haven't played it... Sacred : 78% (repetitive...) Arcanum : 75% (couldn't stand the ugly visuals and music, but interesting setting) Jade Empire : Haven't played it... Dungeon Lords : Haven't played it... Deus ex : 70% (couldn't get into it and gave up) Lionheart : Only played the demo, so I can't give it a score. But it looked like a 60% game... Might and magic 9 : haven't played it... Please include other games I've forgotten about, now lets see if someone has as much spare time as I do, to post nerdy lists like this :D

Mavellous spell. I could hear the birds speaking to one another in trees over the horizon, I could hear the rustlings as the clouds rubbed against each other in the sky. I could hear the sound a rainbow makes as it arches it's back over the world. Then a dog barked behind me and I burst my left eardrum."

Arkan Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 I can't believe people are giving SoA 95+ scores. "Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." - Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials "I have also been slowly coming to the realisation that knowledge and happiness are not necessarily coincident, and quite often mutually exclusive" - meta
mkreku Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Baldurs Gate 1 : 80% (loved the freeform style, hated IE) Baldurs Gate 2 : 60% (I could never get into it) Icevind Dale 1 : 70% (I love snow) Icewind Dale 2 : 65% (Technically the best of the IE games, but lacking story) Planescape Torment : 60% (Good idea, boring game) Fallout 1 : 85% (Great game!) Fallout 2 : 90% (More of the same, only better) Vampire Bloodlines : 75% (Bugs killed it for me) Temple of Elemental Evil : 45% (Buggy and uninteresting) Neverwinter Nights : 50% (Horrible single player mode, never cared for multiplayer) KotOR 1 : 80% (Good, but console-ish) KotOR 2 : 85% (Great story, but unifinished) Daggerfall : 85% (Fantastic atmosphere, but B.U.G.G.Y.) Morrowind : 50% (Too many flaws to mention) Dungeon Siege : 30% (Technically great, but not a game) Diablo : 50% (Pointless) Diablo 2 : 55% (Good co-op brainless fun) System Shock 2 : 90% (Fantastic horror RPG, even in co-op) Arx Fatalis : 70% (Good debut game) Gothic : 90% (Best game idea ever) Gothic 2 : 92% (Like a refined and completed version of Gothic) Soulbringer : 55% (Difficult game to play and get into) Wizardry 8 : Haven't played (I think) Sacred : 60% (A buggy, but better version of Diablo) Arcanum : 60% (Ambitious) Jade Empire : ~80% (Haven't played more than 5-8 hours, but it's not a RPG) Dungeon Lords : 70% (Could have been great, but buggy and unfinished) Deus Ex : 91% (Fantastic story, combat and atmosphere) Lionheart : 60% (Not as bad as some people say) Might and Magic 9 : 30% (I had to review this.. pile of dung) Ultima IV : 90% (Groundbreaking) Ultima V : 90% (Better technically but not storywise) Ultima IX : 70% (I loved it, despite it not being a 'real' Ultima) Wasteland : 95% (The fanboi in me had to include this )) Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Volourn Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 "Jade Empire : ~80% (Haven't played more than 5-8 hours, but it's not a RPG)" Yes, it is. It has everything that makes a RPG a RPG. Choices that matter, and that effect the game world. Multiple quest solutions, and more. And, no, Inventory Matrix does not equal role-palying. And, yes, I know the combat is RT. Just like it is in BL. Another role-playing game. Arkan, that's because SOA is awesome. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
Arkan Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Arkan, that's because SOA is awesome. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, it is a good game, but I don't see how it's worthy of 95%. Azarkon Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 96% is simply an A. In today's schools, inflated grades are the norm, so why not SoA? There are doors

Bytor Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 I can see this thread becoming very popular......... Did anyone ever play the Monkey Island series? I don't think it's really RPG, but: Monkey Island Series: 90% Monkey Island 4- 50% (Transition to 3D left the game critically flawed, focusing on graphics rather than gameplay) Grim Fandango-95% (Classic- used the 3D thing very well. Shame no sequel was made......) Apologies if this is slightly off topic, but I felt the need to talk about the games I love "I tried the most potent Noise Amplification spell once upon a time.
Arkan Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 True, it's what's behind the numbers/letters, that count. But 96% out of 100% is damn near perfect, and there are flaws in the game that make it nowhere near perfect. "Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Leferd Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 It's a 95/96 because it is a damn near perfect game. "Things are funny...are comedic, because they mix the real with the absurd." - Buzz Aldrin."P-O-T-A-T-O-E" - Dan Quayle
Volourn Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 "You're probably right since you've spent a lot more time than me with this game, but from what I've seen, it's very linear, very combat oriented and the choices I've made haven't affected much. Yet." It is linear. This is true. But, not that much more linear than KOTOR. If you take out the ability to travel tot he 4 planets, KOTOR is just as linear. Combat oriented? No more than any other BIO RPG or for that matter 99% of RPGs including Gothic or Fallout. That said, JE actually gets points for ridding itself of most pointless combat. There is very rarely a time where there's combat for combat's sake which exists in the BGs, NWNs, KOTORs, or FOs. Choices do effect things. In fact, they do right from the start. You said you played between 5-8 hours. I'm gonna assume you finished ch1... I'll give you just one exmaple here. How did you handle the guy who has a debt in Gao the Greater? Your choice here can definitely effect you later. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
Darque Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Baldurs Gate 1 : 87% (It started the modern era of RPGs) Baldurs Gate 2 : 85% (started good, but the end was a bit underworked) Icevind Dale 1 : 60% (bugs made it unplayable) Icewind Dale 2 : 70% (better than the first) Planescape Torment : 90% (Awesome) Fallout 1 : 90% (also awesome) Fallout 2 : 99% (the BEST) Vampire Bloodlines : N/A Temple of elemental evil : 75% (Dry and dull and buggy, but still better than IWD/2) Neverwinter Nights : 76% (Go and fetch only works so well) KOTOR 1 : 95% (Awesome) KOTOR 2 : N/A Morrowind : 80% (great game, but there is such a thing as 'too much' of a good thing) Dungeon Siege: 60% (meh) Diablo : N/A Diablo 2 : 80% (good, mindless fun) System Shock 2 : 96% (Fantastic Horror game :D ) Arx Fatalis : N/A Gothic : N/A Gothic 2 : 50% (only tried it, sucked too badly) Soulbringer : N/A Wizardry 8 : N/A Sacred : 78% (pretty... but it's no Diablo2) Arcanum : 75% (Would have been far better if the game was balanced) Jade Empire : N/A Dungeon Lords : N/A Deus ex : 85% (totally changed my view on combat) Lionheart : 72% (it has it's fun moments, the end isn't one of them) Might and magic 9 : N/A
Darth Barth Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 Since almost everyone here has a phobia of 1st person RPGs.. Lands of Lore CD - 80% - I remember being blown away by the opening "cinematic" Lands of Lore 2 - 65% - Started off with a great premise... Lands of Lore 3 - 78% - Almost as good as the first game. Loved the guild system. Eye of the Beholder - 60% - Not exactly Dungeon Master but close. Eye of the Beholder 2 - 81% - Awesome presentation, nice challenge. Eye of the Beholder 3 - ??? - Never got more than 30 minutes in. Wizardry 1 - 40% - I loved it when I was in grade school.. it has not aged well. Wizardry 2 - 30% - Only worth a "once through" to say you played it. Wizardry 3 - 30% - It had neat little pictures in the manual. Graph paper sales started to go up this time in the 80's. Wizardry 4 - 20% - Exciting premise 20 years ago. You are the bad guy? Rad! Ultimately, boring as hell and too difficult for its own good. Wizardry 5 - 55% - Modern Wizardry begins to take bloom... Wizardry 6 - 65% - ... and picks up steam along the way... (all for a pen?! Whoa!) Wizardry 7 - 78% - ... and finally peaks here! Dark Savant is bad! Wizardry 8 - ??? - Never played. At all. I know. Wizards and Warriors - 70% - Not the NES game, duh! Good fun, but way too easy. Might and Magic 1 - 60% - Much more involving than Wiz at the time. Might and Magic 2 - 69% - Getting better! Might and Magic 3 - 73% - Bigger, better, mo' beautiful! Yummy. Might and Magic 4 - 73% - The goodness has continued. Nice story, too! Might and Magic 5 - 73% - Again good plot, graphics and music! Might and Magic 6 - 70% - After years of waiting, a nice continuation. Might and Magic 7 - 73% - Turned off by graphics but got sucked in by Scavenger Hunt. Might and Magic 8 - 65% - Neat NPCs but some really crappy quests. Might and Magic 9 - 40% - Pretty on outside, ugly on inside.. lowpoint of the M&Ms. Elder Scrolls 1: Arena - 65% - Very fun gameplay.. but crap quests and zero plot. Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall - 70% - Buggy! But drastic and awesome gameplay change from Arena. Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind - 68% - Good game. Very sandboxish. Better quests. Not the dialogue I expect nowadays. After fan mods and expansions, rating jumps to 78% Anvil of Dawn - 70% - Nice fun adventure with pretty graphics. Descent to Undermountain - 40% - Not good by any means, but nowhere near as bad as its made out to be. Thats enough for right now. WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE.
Yst Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 Cheers to Barth for reviewing a bunch of chronically overlooked games! Nice to see those names on the list.
